Too late for synthetic?

I have a 96 Tacoma with 64k miles on it. Its been run on conventional oil since new-changed every 3000 miles. I want to switch to synthetic oil, but I have heard of problems when the switch was made on high mileage bikes. Does the same hold true for auto engines? Is it too late for synthetic oil?

Providing you used a good dino oil you should be fine. Be SURE and run a cleaner of some sort through the oil before changing to the synthetic to help remove some of the built up crud. It is possible you may see a seal or gasket leak because the synthetic oil will actually remove the impurities left behind from the previous oil which may have caused the seal or gasket to dry and crack. 64K really isn't that many miles so more than likely you'll be just fine.

Thanks for the info.Especially on running the cleaner. The last I checked the outfit I worked for sold a few kinds. I don't think I'll have any problems either. If you take care of your vehicles and treat them right they usually love you right back--most of the time. Some times you have to have a talk with them. I know I'm not the only one that does that.I hope!

Most of the "cleaners" are nothing more than kerosene. I used to work in SEVERAL auto stores and the Motor flush stuff is just a quart of kero. Just pour in a quart and let the engine idle for 10 minutes (I think thats what the can says) then drain and do a complete oil change, filter included.
