Hawaii Riding

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I know this is off topic, but I have seen a few posts from Hawaiin folk.

Where all do you ride and on which islands? I looked into the Mauna Kea 200 in 2000, but a place I called said it was cancelled indefinitely for eco reasons.

While on Oaho in 1998, I stopped by Domenicos for the fun of it and also found an MX track on the north shore. The track looked carved out of clay, but I would have ridden it if I had a bike there to ride.

Do any of the other islands have available riding?

Sorry for my ignorance. Mahalo!

I rode the Two-Wheels Dual Sport Tour on Kauai during our honeymoon in '97. Unfortunately I heard the ride is now defunct.

I rode the dual sport in Kauai as well, in April '99. Awesome, just me and the guide. We ripped and did over 150 miles in one day. I don't know if there still in business, but it seemed to be doing good at the time.

I've been to the islands a few times, my wife's cousin lives on Maui and my sister in law owns a time share. I'd love to go back there and ride again. I also did a lot of hiking. Some of the toughest terrain I've ever seen.

Glenn - That's the one! What a fantastic ride. I did it the day after the remnants of a hurricane drenched the island. Most of the morning was spent sliding around on grease. That red dirt is nothing but clay. The cane fields were awesome. My guide literally vanished into that stuff. Had I not been glued to his rear fender I could of been lost several times. The afternoon was a blast too. Up through Waimea Canyon and then out onto the NaPali coast.

Heard they lost access to a lot of farm land. There's a member here, Ando I think, that's associated with Two Wheels. Maybe he knows the story.

Oahu, here. North Shore - Kahuku - is where the track is. There is approximately ten square miles of some of the toughest trails in the world in that area, as well as HaleManu, and Mililani. The military hold their training there - got caught up in some Concertina wire for over an hour once - still can't feel big toe.

Haven't had the opportunity to ride on the other islands - but know that there is also a track in Kauai that is quite popular. Tree-huggers are doing their thing out here as well...it's only a matter of time.

HR,

I have seen you at the Husaberg board. I am glad you like your new ride. I still haven't got mine/decided on it yet, but I can't wait.

The islands of Hawaii are some of my favorite to visit and I would love to ride there. If they ever bring back the Mauna Kea 200, I am there!!

Thanks to everyone else for the info.

Woodsrider,

Thats it, same ride. I wish I could remember the guide's name. He was a little guy on a KLX250, but he could rip through that stuff. I was bottoming that DR good in the cane fields keeping up with him. That "Hawaiian Ice" has got to be the slickest stuff on earth. He showed me some of his clubs hare and hound course, real tough. They actually start on the beach, and ride inland.

I did some four-wheeling on the Oahu north shore. Some trails look pretty good but I didn't have any locals to show me around. I spent some time on the big island, but didn't ride there. The big island has the most diverse terrain. Do any of you guys ride there? What are the opportunities for trail riding (I know the Mauna Kea is history)? I can only imagine what crashing on lava does to bike and body.

I give all you guys a lot of credit. People have no idea how tough it is until they've been there, and I didn't even see the worst of it. I love Hawaii and will probably go back next year. I'll get in touch with you guys when I do.

Glenn,

Paul was my guide. We were both riding XR650L's. Did you take the "shortcut" behind the college?

Ah, you bring back memories.

I lived in Hawaii from 1978 to 1989, and rode all the HH and some motocross on Oahu and Kauai, as well as the Mauna Kea 200 several years. I agree it is some of the most challenging riding I have ever experienced.

My favorite HH was the one on Kauai. We would ship our bikes over to Kauai from Oahu on a barge, pick them up at the port, and ride them along the highway back to our rented condo at Poipu. The start of that race was fantastic, starting on the beach with about 200 riders. It was a shotgun start and an all out race down the beach toward a trailhead with waves crashing on the shore to your right. Fantastic.

The Mauna Kea was so varied in terrain, I don't think you could have asked for a more interesting and challenging ride. From sloppy rain forests with gigantic fallen Koa trees to haul your bike over, to black obsidian fields with rasor sharp edges and so slippery you couldn't even stand, to 10,000 foot plus elevations with sidehill trails on Mauna Kea in loose shale and rocks. Just About everything.

I lived on Oahu, in Mililani Town, and could ride right from my door through the pineapple and sugar cane field to the mountains and valleys of central Oahu. Good memories.

Woodsrider,

I don't remember that trail, but we could have done it. Since it was just the two of us, we stayed out longer and did some extra miles. I was in race mode just trying to stay with this guy, so if he didn't tell me about a basic landmark like a building, I may not have noticed it. I think if I lived there I would definately ride a 250 4-stroke. Before we left in the morning, I wasn't too up on riding a DR350S with a CV carb, but after a few of those "ice" trails, it was plenty.

Bigbird,

Thats exactly how they tell it there. Your lucky to have been part of that.

No green sticker....Kahuku is still awesome....down in Mililani, where you are talking about is a Costco... and a new auto mall going in, but there is still riding all around on either side of H2. and as far as riding your bike up to Costco to get a dog and a soda.....HPD doesnt even look twice, nor do they up at North Shore.....run down to get gas, etc....still pretty sweet.....
The windmills are a trip up above the beaches on North shore....my boy and I spent a lot of time riding up and around each one and the support facilities for each.........the one HUGE one put up by NASA is wild.....
Yep awesome riding, perfect weather and trails that can break your heart!
