2003 YZF rumors or thoughts?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

With the CRF being the cream of the crop this year (by all accounts so far). Does anyone have any thoughts or rumors about what Yamaha is doing for 2003. I have heard a YZ450F in the works, probably alot lighter and I would imagine, easier to start. I would imagine something would be done, being this is the 5th year of the 4stroke, and I am sure they would only want to give up this year to Honda before counteracting. Will Big Blue have to take a back seat for the next couple of years? or will one of the pioneers of motocross 4 stroke technology sound back with their own ace? (sounds like a promo line to me!!!) :D

all titanium frame with carbon fiber plastics, and an all new 3-stroke motor triple-supercharged on propane that puts out 75hp at 27,000rpm. It weighs 147lbs wet and has cruise control, and a 12v outlet.
And BNG.

I seen one.

Dude, you should work in Marketing... LOL... that was pretty good...hmmmm that would be pretty bad ass. :D

I was just in at my kawi dealer checkin out the new bikes. And they said there was talk at a meeting of kawi coming out with an aluminum frame and a 250 4 stroke to come out late next year. Could be interesting since kawi hasn't done anything to much the past couple years.

I have a buddy that works for Yamaha and he told me the 03 YZF will be completely new, from top to bottom. He said everything from the frame to the engine will be changed.
Another point, the cream of the crop, as far as 4 strokes go is still the YZF.
Until someone can de-throne Ferry!

The red bikes are on all the show-room floors here in Texas as are the blue bikes. Bottom line is the 426 wins and the Honda has not.
Not to take away from the Honda or the Yamaha, I own BOTH!

I'm not going to let this deteriorate into another stupid my bike is better than yours thread. Keeping that in mind if you don't have something useful to add, then stop typing. That goes for everyone.

Thank You Rich!!!

Yeah, I guess we will have to wait and see what Yamaha does, But there is no doubt in my mind that they are NOT sitting on their butts while Honda is in the limelight now...They've known for a year what Honda was basically putting out (450cc's on alum frame). and they didnt panick and put something out on the 426 to combat the Honda this year. This to me, shows that they are fine with their product (and why not) and have a set time schedule with their Development of the next 4... anyway, they just redid the 2strokes so they probably like to focus on 1 line at a time..
.
the 250F is maxed out on cc's right? so they will probably tool on the weight issue and starting, especially if Honda alum frame version coming out...I was just curious about the 426F, that is alot of weight to trim, and I have read a past article from a yamaha engineer that they do not see the benefits of using alum frame, so I dont see that we will see that on the bike.. Maybe a new engine reconfiguration? too much babling on my part. see you all.

The YZ450F is already here! Rich's bike uses a Wiseco kit and combined with the YZF;s relatively small valve area the powerband is like a Honda 450 but harder pulling with an earlier peak.

I think that the engineers at Yamaha have to do some soul searching this year. Whether to abandon the powerband they've positioned the YZF with and swing over to a traditional European powerband (smooth pulling flat curve).

Now the AMA has thrown a curve ball into the whole displacement debate. In 2003 a 4-stroke must be at least 475cc to compete in the open class and a maximum of 450cc to compete in the 250 class. In Europe the Rinaldi team has a cast aluminum cylinder that brings the displacement closer to 490cc. Maybe Yamaha should sell an aftermarket cylinder for guys who want the traditional Euro powerband or to make it legal for the open class?

Hi Eric,
You stated ( I think that the engineers at Yamaha have to do some soul searching this year. Whether to abandon the powerband they've positioned the YZF with and swing over to a traditional European powerband (smooth pulling flat curve). For the intended purpose of the bike do you think the current power band is the correct one?

How about a "476"cc sticker? whens the last time someone in local AMA Racing has been tore down for displacement checking. (Remember the old days when guys would pull there 370(RM) side panels and put on the 250 panels?)

BTW Eric, how would your 450 kit hold up to an ocassional enduro?
and would I have to replace my Original, Stock kick lever?

I read somewhere, but I forgot where. I read that the YZF's are going to be completely redone from top to bottom and will be ten pounds lighter with electric starts because everyone complains they are too hard to start (which they are a pain). I have a 2001 YZ250f and love it. I don't understand how you can shave 10 pounds plus have an electric starter. I thought electric starters were heavy. Anyway only time will tell what yamaha is up to.

Posted by: Budda---------------------

I'm curious to see if they will go with an automatic decompression system, or stick with the current setup. Is there any significant weight difference between either type of system?

Posted by: zcookie49---------------------

That's some good points there. You would think a battery - electric start would be heavier.
.
adding on to the point of the auto compression, you would imagine that they would incorporate that into the bike to lessen the image of "hard starting bikes"..
**** move the Hot Start Button to the handle bar, like some of the aftermarket kit, or like the Honda.. that would be more appealing as well.
.
Question -- Is there any downsides to auto compression?
:think
