Hi nifty good to see you are getting into it i love it when people start to service their own suspension-you are like a new born baby just opening its eyes-BS mode off, you can get the forks apart using a air gun-just dont spin away for ages, apply alittle downwards pressure to the fork to stop the damper rod spinning. If no air gun is available you can even just use a long screwdriver to hold the damper rod,or you can get a piece of copper pipe from the local diy centre and just cut 2 notches to line up with the damper rod(if you turn the fork upside down and remove the big washer you will see the shape it needs to be) once apart you can redo the tool to have 4 tags and fit much better so the 2nd leg is easy.I dont mind helping with advice BTW as i enjoy it.
