Hone slider?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Someone told me I should hone the sliders when replacing seals.
Any truth to this?
I realize there should be no dings but hone w/sandpaper????:think

When you say hone sliders I assume you mean your inner fort tubes? You do want to check for nicks and dents and any other flaws however sanding them would cause major damage. You would have to most likely have to end up getting them replated which would most likely cost more than buying new tubes. Who ever told you to sand them most likely read a article that mxa put out showing a race tech suspension tuner "honing" more like buffing the tubes with some sort of buffing wheel / lathe deal. Sand paper no matter what the grit would be bad news. Another quick tip when sliding new seals on to the tubes use a plastic bag limbed up with assembly lube or a little fork oil over the end of the tube to prevent tearing the seal.

If you do try to buff out minor flaws on the inner tube plating you have to be careful not to get it too smooth. There has to be some surface roughness to retain oil for seal lubrication.

I saw that article in MXA about buffing out scratches and wondered how many people were going to ruin their forks trying to do it.
