Just curious.....

Anybody ever notice that turning the spark arrestor around makes the exhaust sound different? :think

I have an R-4 on my 520 E/XC and I also turned the spark arrestor around. I rode it this way for about 50 miles till the thing totaly came apart and blew out the end of the exhaust. I don't know but I think that having it in the original way, it probably wouldn't do this. I have since made an insert for my R-4 out of some perforated stainless we have at work, the thing was just to much with an open exhaust.

Are you saying the noise was too much with the s/a out, or that there was actually a power difference without the s/a?

I was thinking of adding an R4. I had a PC T-4 until I flipped the bike and bent it in half. What do you think of the WB pipe? Any peroformance gains? Sound level compared to the competition tip?

Loco....

I dunno if there if there is much of a performance gain over the Power Up baffle, as I never used it. I just hacked the entire baffle/spark arrestor off the stock tip and rode it like that (pretty much made it straight through flow). When I decided it would be a good idea to get a s/a, I went ahead and got the R4. I wanted something that looked and sounded better than stock, too, power gain wasn't that much of an issue since it was already so fast.

I didn't notice much of a gain over the way I was running my stock pipe, but I'd bet there would be a noticeable difference over the HRC baffle.

Check out the September 2000 issue of DIRT BIKE for an XR650 pipe shootout. The same article can be found at the Yahoo XR650R discussion group, too.

just been there my friend. Flipped my 250F and wrecked my FMF Powercore IV. Bought the R4. Not a really happy camper, and i would swap for another FMF anyday.
I have played with the jetting, and i think that the pipe runs much better with the SA in (will try reversing it, just to see). It is now going pretty good, but its still noisy, and the throttle response isn't as good as the FMF. Noticeable when doing wheelies (i bet you like doing them too, and i also bet you didn't have your foot over the back brake, just like me  )
But i love the noise it makes while idling away, and the feeling of the exhaust gas hitting your face from 4 metres away. Thats pretty funky!

Both noise and power increase on my 520. I know the 520 has diferent power than my 00 XR650rwith a White Bro's E-series with a turn down end cap(no disk's), but removing the screen it had more snap to it and kind of a mid-range hit, wich I didn't realy like. With the screen instaled or the screen I made in it, this tames the power down the way Ilike it, nice and smooth.
