rebuilding yz shock

I am about to buy a bike at a good deal that needs the rear shock fixed. I am competent enough to take it out on my own but I am pretty sure I would need someone else to do the internal work to it. So, how much does this cost and who is a good person to send it to?

Be very careful buying this bike. Depending on just what needs to be "fixed" on the shock, you might be in for a nasty surprise. Some shock components are nasty expensive.

To answer your question,
Jer at MX-Tech http://www.mx-tech.com
and
Shocknut at Trak Controll http://www.trakcontrol.com
Have gotten a lot of good reports on this forum. I've been very pleased with my dealings with them.

well the purchase is a done deal. I bought it (96 yz126) at $1000 thinking that it is a $200 fix and the bike is worth $1500 or better once fixed.
Anyway, The shock leaks oil and only has a few inches of travel before it is rock hard. Does this give any indication what is going on inside it (aka how bad is it?)?

one more thing
there is a 1995 shock on e bay. Will this fit on my 1996 bike?

My wild guess would be bent shaft. Take off the shock. Remove the spring (loosen the adjuster collar all the way and slip off the retainer at the bottom). And see if the shaft will go full travel. Rotate the shaft holding the body stationary and see if the shaft has a wobble.

I think the 95 might fit a 96. You could try an aftermarket shock company like ohlins or progressive and see if they list the same part number for both years.

If you're really lucky you can check one of the online Yamaha parts diagrams and see if the two years have the same part number. They probably have different numbers even if they bolt on due to internal revisions.

Sounds like Mace has got the right idea. If it's the shaft your looking at about $175.00 OR SO FOR THE SHAFT AND ANOTHER 60 OR SO TO SERVICE IT

thanks Mace and Pro-Design
I guess I can deal w/ about a $200 bill it it comes to that. I havent had time to take it apart yet and get a better scoop on what is wrong. You have me pointed in the right direction.
P.S. I passed on the e bay shock. Better to spend another wad of cash and be sure that it is right.
