Phelan-Dec. 15th

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

Hey Bundy---I couldn't wait for you to post this. Let's get this going!
On the last Phelan ride we scouted out some new trail, and we believe we can put together about 100 miles of interesting loops.
This is a call to all you SoCal DRNers to get off your couches and get the work-out of your life on some of the finest single-track in the area!
Bundy--I say we start staging at 9:00 so we can get organized and on the trail by 10:00. How about it?
Same Bat place:Wilson Ranch Road.:D

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

WOOOO HOOOOO I'm in. I need to touture this out of shape body of mine. I'm still carrying around the weight I gained while the wife was Pregnant. How come she lost hers but I didn't loose mine.... Can't figure it out.

Plus I need to come out and support my fellow 2-smoke Pumpkin riders ... We need a pumpkin smiley

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Junior and me are there! Let' stage at 8 so we can ride by 9! How about it? I'm going to Glen Helen on the 13th so as long as I don't toss the mighty Zuki, then I'm in. See you guys there
Elk

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

8:00 it is! Any late comers can catch us on the next loop!

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

God willing my bike is ready .... I'm in !

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Ok boys, if were gonna do this lets do it right.
Ktmboy and desert_ racer.... you guys are the offiical milage keepers ( since your pumpkins have OD`s ). Set both to zero and the one with the fewest miles at the end will be the " offical " miles traveled.
That way we have two bikes keeping score, in case one of you dont have the stamina to make it.
What do you think ktmboy, how many loops of the trails we put together last time would we have to do to get to the 100 mile mark, 3 or 4 ?
If I have a day off next week, maybe I can go out and ribbon some new trail to go with what we rode over the weekend.
But lets make this a challenge, every one who can make the whole 100 miles becomes a member of the 100 mile club. But to make it interisting lets put a time limit or somekind of handicap system in place. That way it will be an honor to be in the 100 mile club. Maybe we can come up with somekind of prize for those who make it.
Or do you think 100 miles will be to easy?
What do you think, sound cool or what. Or am I just crazy.
This could be the start of something big. Purdy soon everyone on DRN will want to be in the CLUB!

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Considering it gets dark at 6 PM we'll have about 9 hours if we leave promptly at 9 AM. That's about 11 mph. We're gonna need at least 1 gas stop - maybe 2. If we can keep the group together I bet it will take us almost all day.

Perhaps we should keep this fun for everyone and just say that for this inaugural event the whole idea is to just finish. I really like the idea of it ... but I bet I'll like it alot less at about 70 or so miles !!

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

I here you, i`m not trying to make it a race, just some friendly competition.
Kind of like a friday night poker game or something.
What about useing a speed average like at an enduro.
Lets see, at 24 mph average it would take about 4 hours and some change.
But at 18 mph average it goes to 6 hours. So we pick an average speed and then say every one that finishes within a set amount of time gets in.
Of course we dont have to do this this time, but it would be fun to do in the future. Maybe have a bike rodeo for all the socal DRN`s

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

I see where Bundy gets the title of "Ruler of the Dark Side". He is trying to kill me on my second ride out. I'm in on trying to ride the 100 but I'm in no shape for a race. I say lets scope this thing out and get a good route and then we can start planning for the Annual "MxBundy 100 Miles of Torture" event. :scream: :scream:

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

:o

Ok guys,
I get the hint, its just sometimes my enthusiasm gets the best of me.
But I think this is still a good Idea, for a future ride. Maybe at the end of this season we can plan something.
Eel had me rollin with all his "100" mile rides.in the other phelan thread.

later mxbundy

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Bundy,

Don't get me wrong... I like the idea... Just not in the shape I'm in now... Although I have a feeling that after a couple of rides with you I won't be able to use that excuse any more.....

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

I guess I'll find out how many miles I can go on one tank. This loop thing, will there be a break in between so's I can feed my 2 stroke monster? I think I'll just push Bundy into a poison oak bush! That'll slow him down. So here's the question, how many miles WILL I get to a tank. I usually gauge it by time not miles. I can ride a good 4 hours at the track on one tank, with some to spare. I can ride two good rides at Phelan with not much to spare. I wanna be a part of the 100 mile club, even if I have to push it! Will this ride include a trip to that cafe off the 138, I think I remember how to get there.

Oh, do I need a sparky, I forgot if you guys talked about that?
Elk

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Don't worry Elk. I think there will be enough of us small tank boys there to warrent a pit stop. And any trip to a cafe is good with me. How do you think I got into the shape I'm in now.

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Yes elk I think a sparky would be a good idea, the last two times out the ranger stoped us. Do you have one? I hope so, dont want to see you guys missout.

later mxbundy

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Hey, I'm gonna buy a sparky anyway and then jet my bike down one so it doesn't spooge so much. I'm packing my mula just in case we breeze by the cafe too. Elk

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Come on guys you gonna ruin my diet.

mxbundy

Posted by: JWW---------------------

100 miles :o

I have never gone that far in one day.... Looking forward to trying it.

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Bundy,

I don't think that Double Bacon Cheesburger you had at My Desert Rose on Sat. was on your diet either but you scarfed that thing down.

By the way check you PM's.

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

:D
Shhhhh....thats our little secret.
Anyway i`ve turned a new leaf, check my post in the fitness q/a forum.

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

You guys mind the company of a fellow 2-stroke rice burner? Sounds like fun and I’m definitely interested. Although I have to agree with a few of my out -of-shape hamburger eating motorcycle bros when I say Id probably die before 100 miles. Now if I was just married to one of those Aerobic work out, motorcycle riding, super models I wouldn’t have this problem. (I have to have some excuse!).

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Come into the light, all welcome.......

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Boodac... More Riders = More Crashes = More laughing = More Calories Burned = Better Shape

Come out and join us. We may have the making of a mini DirtWeek going here.

Hey I'm with you on that super model thing... Now if I could just convince the wife....

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Don't look at the light, it is the dark side tricking you. I think we're gonna have to start this 2 stroke 4 choke thing again! Keep steady and the 2 stroke will prevail, it always does and it always will. Bundy is just trying to lead you into the poison oak. It's not really 100 miles, it just feels that much to the 4 stroke guys, they have to work twice as hard. It's only 50 miles! Come one come all, for the 2 stroke alliance is stronger and we will stamp out the 4 smoke, thumping poopie heads!
Elk

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Just wanted to remind everyone that sparkys are required.:think
Elk if you are gonna by a new one, the fMF turbine core is the way to go. I have used these on all my previous 2 smokes and they worked great. I didnt have to change jetting, but i`m not a freak about my jetting anyway.

mxbundy

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

The last big ride we had there was a train of 12 guys! I think we'll have a great group this time too. No supermodels though, maybe Thumbs can wear his thong again.
Elk

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

I heard that about Thumbs. Bundy says he looks good in the pink one.

Thumbs ... Wear the pink one will ya.....

I'm startin to get all giddy like Eel.. I don't know if I can wait till the 15th.

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Hey elk shouldnt you be eating a donut or something!

bundy

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

Hey, I can dream about the (women) super model cant I? Just don’t tell the wife I said that lol. Hey sounds good I could use the ride. Now a man in a thong thats a scary thought. I have a feeling I’m going to be pushing my bike instead of riding when and if you guys try the 100 mile thing.
Dear Santa:
Can you bring me a desert tank for Xmass? I promise I wont buy a 4 stroke.

Look forward to seeing you guys there.

Rich

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

You know Bundy I was thinkin I wanted to get one of those fancy new KTM 4-smoker 520's but I think I would be banned from the group if I did. What have you done to these guys to make them loath the dark side sooooo much?

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

You had to throw the donut card didn't you?! Why does it always have to go to the donut. I'm hurt, I usually eat a bagel instead but I won't pass up a good filled "D-nut" either. Just for that, I'm not bringing any goodies for you boys!

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

HEY.... :scream: :scream:

Don't punish the masses because of one FOOL

Posted by: JWW---------------------

KTMboy & Bundy......... Are we going to stay west of the 15 or are we crossing over?

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

I dont know what got this started,
probably just plain ol jealousy.
They cant stand that a 4 stroke has superior tractability, better braking through compression braking, or its soothing exhaust note when you are riding behind them.

The money that i save alone in mixing oil pays for my hamburger habit.
Or maybe its because my little 250F leaves them big ol smelly 2 smokes eatin dust

Jeff.....West

mxbundy

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

That's kinda what I figured cause I was dislikin you a little until we had that drag race

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Ok, keep it up,
I just might have to go get a big bad 520 myself........
Elk will not know what hit him when a wall of 520 roost cleans him right off his little cute yellow bike.......
I`ve been in the closet for an orange bike for a while now.....

bundy

Posted by: brett r---------------------

One of our favorite loop's at Dove is around 60 miles, I usually end up being the tour guide and I always run an odometer and a clock, sometimes the loop takes 2.5 hours, sometimes 6, sometimes we don't make it. It all depends who's on the ride. Most newer 250's can only do 35 to 40 miles on a stock tank so you may have to do 3 loop's or carry extra gas but it can be done, we had a few 100 mile days over thanksgiving . If you start at 10 am you only have 6 to 7 hours of day light so that could be a problem. good luck

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Hey Brett,

Nice to hear from you, why dont you join us?
Any way i`ve been wanting to get in touch with you ever since that qualifier at Gorman. Lets go on a ride sometime.

later mxbundy

Posted by: brett r---------------------

I'm not sure I think we have a trip planned that weekend but if I don't Im up for it, or you guys could make a weekend out of it and join us.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Bundy, I always knew you were in the closet, aching to come out!! LOL! Bring on that orange beast, this cute little yellow 250 is waiting for a real challenge! J/K, I tried to hang with the Bundy master but I was tired, my tire was low on air, my jetting was off, my back hurt, I had dirt in my goggles and my plug was fouled! I'll work on the bike to get it up to par. We can warm up on the track where we park. See you there!

Posted by: scar tissue---------------------

Thumbs and Scar should be in. My bike is supposed to go over 100 miles with my oversize tank on it. We'll see.

For you 2 smokes, last big bear ride Thumbs carried xtra gas in a evion bottle in a back pack. I'm sure there some safety rule against that, but it worked.

What the weather likeup there. still tank top, shorts, sandals, and no helmet temps.

Maybe I'll wear socks with the sandals. that'll keep me warm.

Bundy - Does this mean that you're going to want the pink thong back and if so when should we start calling by your new name............. MXbetsy

I think the tutu should be worn by one of our new friends/victims. Maybe desert_racer or Boodac. And since it is a bit cold out we will give them the option of wearing leg warmers. You know, like the ones they wore in the movie Flash Dance. Or better yet.....whoever riders the least miles has to sport the tutu on the next ride.

BTW - Do I really look good in the pink one or are you guys kidding?

Scar - with comments like that it sounds like you ride one of those them there 4 wheeler thingies....

thumbs.. I have a baby blue tutu and some purple flashdance socks I can sport for the ride if you like. Although they won't match my Shartruse (sp) boots and lavender helmet.

Thats great news, those are two of betsy' favorite colors. I'm sure he will be very happy.

LOFLMAO

Somebody come help me cause

I'VE FALLEN AND I CAN"T GET UP!!!!!

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Oh sure....... you guys have to pick a weekend whe TTRGuy is FINALLY going to get to come home!!!

Coupla questions:

How far is Phelan from Victorville?
What is the terrain like? ie, friendly enough for a spaz like me? (Thumbs, Eel, you know what I'm talkin' bout)

I'll talk to him tonigh but TTRGuy get's off work at 7:00 am Sat morning. Since he'll already be practically there (I think) I could come down with the bikes and get him then head over to where you guys are.

If he likes the idea and we go, I don't expect to keep up with you guys but I'm just concerned that the terrain is the kind I can handle so I can plug along at my own speed on my own. No babysitting required.

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

Dang!!!!-turn my back and this thread goes 5 pages!
Bundy--we did over 50 miles in 3 hrs., so it'll probably take us a good 6+ hrs. to do over 100, and us 2-smokes will have to make 3 loops. If you're serious about doing some miles, we can run the length of the ridge and back as a warm-up, and that should pile a few quick ones on before we hit the canyons.

Hey Eel----I love the idea of doing some 100 milers. Great idea; the 100 mile club!

Boodac, Jeff---glad to hear you guys are coming out!

Scar---100 will be close even on the thumper, because we'll be in the tight twistys all day!

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

GSR--Just saw your post. I posted in the other Phelan thread that you guys are welcome to garage your bikes at my house if you decide to stay over.
Phelan is 15-20 minutes from Victorville.

About 15 or 20 minutes.
The terrain is spaz friendly with the exception of "The Sand Hill"

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Okay.......nevermind. I'm a total dork. I thought this ride was THIS weekend! Didn't realize it was NEXT weekend.

TTRGuy will be home this weekend but will be working next weekend.

But now that I think about it. If I'm not riding here locally with my friend who's learing to ride. I could probably go next weekend. Then I could stay over and see Eddie. I won't know until next week though.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Not to scare you off or anything GSR 'cause it's great fun seeing you and all but some of the hills - both up and down - might not exactly be to your liking ... if my memory serves me you never were too keen on downhills ? Am I right ?

There is alot of space to ride around in that's plenty friendly but I think where we are going might not be your cup of whisky .... could be wrong though. Not to be a killjoy or anything but I thought you would want to know. There are some pretty steep downhills ... and many are fairly large as well.

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

Hilly? Yes, very. The kind of place KTMs' are designed for! If we do the ridges first, there's the road that runs parallel to the trail for anyone that becomes too tired/frightened.
Personally, downhills terrify me too! I just do 'em!

Chances are I will skip the sand down hill.... Going up is a different story... I cant get enough of it.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Man, I miss the posts and I'm 2 pages down! I'm in for the sand hill in any direction we want to take it!
Elk

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

My 125 actually much prefers going down the sandhill. It doesn't like "up the sandhill" too well.

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

I went up and down it twice last Sunday, and the downside is not so scary to me anymore---just stay out of my way though, as it's controlled mayhem on the decent!

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Whats scary? JUST PIN IT!

betsy

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

Actually, the downhill is cool, and I'd love to pin it if I could just stop at the bottom! My bike's not too good in the whoops at 80 MPH!:scream:

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

I guess the ol Race-Tech suspension does work pretty good.
Just lean back and pull on the bars!

Hmm.. I might be able to work something out here. A fellow here at work has offered up his 98 YZ400 for me to ride (I dont know if GSR can load my bike by herself) but I can only make it if I am still working nights. Even then I would be getting off work at 7:00 am and have to be back in at 7:00 pm. Dont know if I could get there to catch you guys by 8:00.

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Well lets get this straight then. Are we meeting at 8am or 9am. Either is good with me I just don't want to miss any of the fun .....

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

We're meeting at 0800, that's 8am for you civilians! End of Wilson Ranch Road. We can run the track for a few until everyone gets there. If anyone needs directions, post the request and one of us can help.
Elk

Looking for ward to chewing some dirt with you guys again, Jr. is pretty excited too.

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Thanks Elk ..... I was soooo confused

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

I'm in. Elk -- look forward to meeting you finally. Rest of you guys -- it's been a while. Haven't even seen Scar's Stoker KLX.

Mileage: we will be swinging back in a loop fashion to refuel?

Carnage: Not that I'm in for a full 100 mile carnage run yet -- this will be my first ride back since my accident. "Out of shape" doesn't begin to capture the problem. Long as I don't get lost, though, I should be okay. :scream:

Jetting: any predicted temps/elevation ranges? I want to give the new ride a fair chance on the sand hill, after all.

Just got my sparky btw after months of back order -- woo hoo!

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

I left my last post only to come back today and see 20+ more post. I’m thinking everyone has cabin fever and is dying to ride. Man if you guys are talking about the sand hill I’m thinking about, that is a blast to ride. Much easier coming down than going up. Hey Long< you’re in good company here too. Been down and out since I broke myself up too, so we will be the slow and out of shape ones in the group, I can tell. I might have two other people that may be interested in going. I’m assuming that this would all right since you said the more the merrier. As for the thong, the question really would be? Would ya want to see my big and hairy butt hangin out of that piece of cloth? Anyone that says yes, is riding in the front!!!! LOL

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

Ok, I need clarification on something. (Ignorant one here) Are was talking about Dec 15 -16 weekend or Dec 8-9 (this weekend)? Im hoping you all meant 15 or 16. Someone let me know.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

We tend to drag out these threads as long as we can and by the time we really ride, we're sick of talking about it! It actually gets everyone real excited about getting together with a bunch of riders. I think the most we had out there at one time was 12, which was a blast.

Longtime, ditto on meeting you too. I like to put a face with a screen name or lets say a hairy butt with a screen name!! Not really, I don't even like looking at my wife's (Hairy butt). If she see's this I'm dead!

Boodac, definately OK with us on adding riders, I don't think anyone would have a problem with that. As long as they aren't super models, then I'd have to bow out, don't think I could handle the home front after that!

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

15th! This post should be about 5 pages by then!

Elk. You are lucky you didn't make it to the last Big Bear ride. I still wake up screaming in the middle of the night over that one.:scream:

Ask Longtime about it.

Mastersandblaster and I are going to try to make it, that is, if you guys promise not to be too rough on us.

What are the chances of stopping by the Summit Inn cafe for some Ostrich burgers for lunch??? Yummmmmm. There is a gas station there too for the fuel challenged two-smokes.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

I suggested the cafe also, I'm in for the bird burgers! You wake up screaming because you realized that you ride a 4 stroke.

Got your PM Broodac. Sounds good to me! I'll let you know for sure if I go.

The Eel just doesn't want me to go because of how I shamed him at Big Bear. He doesn't like being beaten by girls, well...at least not beaten on a dirtbike (for those of you who have seen me ride, then you know I'm joking, for those of you how haven't met me... I whooped his ass good.)

No, actually riding a 4 stroke is a good thing. The other thing, you will just have to ask LT about it. I get a little scared just thinking about it.:scream:

Stopped by the cafe on Wednesday and had Ostrich sausage and scrambled Ostrich eggs for breakfast. Wow, what a breakfast!

Speedie, hope you can make it. Don't worry about the downhills. You and your bike will always make it to the bottom no matter how bad you mess up.

Twelve?! That's amateur hour. We had three groups of that for some of our rides. Oh well, you're workin' on it. Actually, this reminds me of a memorable moment up at Big Bear a long time ago. For some reason, I was first to get to a fork in the road -- creek crossing to left, rock garden to right (I must have taken a shortcut, or skipped a hillclimb on the way, okay?!). A kid about 11 was standing there as his father and brother nursed a Jeep through the rock garden. The Jeep is now stalled, and it's really quiet out there in the mountains. He says "Hi. Whatcha doin'?" I say "Oh, just waiting for my buds." A couple of minutes later you start to hear this roar, and next thing between 10-15 bikes come around the bend haulin' you-know-what making a dirt cloud that could be seen for miles. About half stop, the other half turn left and fly on through the creek and out of sight (lots of DRN'ers in that crowd, btw). This line keeps going, and going -- soon hits over 20. I look over at the kid, whose eyes are now as big as saucers, and he says in an awed voice "you got a lot of buds. . . " just before I and those who had stopped jump back into the back of the pack and take off. I was cracking up at the look on that kid's face. It was like one of those movies with a little kid watching a biker gang roaring through a small quiet town.

As to 89'rs nightmares -- I haven't the foggiest as to what he's talking about! Course, I'm not sure Deep Creek will ever be the same. . . and I know that Terry's and other impressionable minds are scarred forever. . .

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

That's 12 on ONE bike!

Posted by: oldandslo---------------------

I`m in. Trying to get Wombat away from his girlfriend long enough for a ride.

Seems to be a little interest in this ride. I keep hearing about this restaurant, maybe this time we can make it. With the amount of light available this will probably keep us short of 100 unless the trail ther is a road.

Looking forward to meeting and riding with more DRN`s.

My thoughts exactly. Its amazing how many things you can make with this approach.

All of us, well some of us, OK maybe just me have made it through sections where I thought for sure I was dead and the throtle came to the rescue.

Of course, it's also been the problem before.

Well. with this many riders, there's no way we'll make 100 miles with the limited daylight, so I say we shoot for 80 and Ostrich burgers!
As for the Big Bear incident, I was fortunate enough to miss the 'shining'.
There were several people that were un-fortunate enough to be eyewitnesses, and I understand that they were able to get a group rate for their much needed therapy.
Elk---I'll bring some rope again, but I refuse to 'wear' it!

Hey Ol what'syername----about time you got out and mixed it up with us younguns'!

LT--that's the first time I've heard the 'buds' story. Try going one size richer on your main and pilot (cold air up here ), but bring the leaner jets with you just in case.

Hey, do they have chili burgers at the cafe? (So I can 'gas it'.)

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

I live about a mile from the Summit Inn and have lived here for over 12 years and Ive never eaten their. Actually, Ive never seen anyone eat their. Are you sure their serving you food? Ive heard that from time to time they serve four legged ostrich meat as well. Ok I have to say that the appearance of the place and the lack of buis makes me wonder so maybe Im not being fair. Maybe what they serve is actually meat.
Looking foward to riding

Rich

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

BTW I was only kidding about when the ride was!!!

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

Boodac--I don't think it's the Summit in we're going to; it's the little cafe on the 138 right where Hwy. 2 takes off to Wrightwood.:D

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Beat me ! Oh YES ! Ohhhhhhhhh .....

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

Oh, ok I know the place. Havent been their in ages. Good thing too, I figured with thong, tutus, and then Summit, I figured this was gonna be the initiation from hell.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Ohhhhhhhhh .....

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

Eel--calm down! Save some of that energy for next week, you'll need it!

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

You're always so darn sensible (Deep Creek water crossing ?) ... you're the Obi-Wan Kenobi of the 2-stroke rebellion.

Posted by: oldandslo---------------------

80 miles is still a long ways. Can I get some bonus miles for trying the hill. Maybe if I hang on tight I can make it this time.

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

There's an idea! We'll award bonus miles for clearing certain obstacles!
Hey, after we're done with the 'cool ones', we can use the bottles as cones and set up an obstacle course. Rodeo, Yee-haw!

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

80 miles ? BONUS miles ? This is a bad sign. By the time the 15th arrives we'll be back to a 40-miler with bonus miles offered to those who drink the most beer at the Cafe.

KTMBoy - Obstacle course made of empty beer bottles ? Yeah - real great idea. That's just what we need ...let's drink a few cases so we can set up and then ride an obstacle course made from the empties. You're a madman !

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

For anyone that has problems getting bigger jets, Tony knows a great trick for restricting your airbox.

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Man, you guys had fun today. I had to work.
But I just got done with servicing the little piglet. Got to be up at 3 am tomorrow for the drive out to Laughlin for the race.
everybody wish me luck.

Thumbs add one rider for me, Corpral Koeslag, that is if his " privates " are up for it.
Hey man, I already had to wear the tutu and thong!:scream:
Lunch at the choke and puke is cool, just dont over do it. I`m gonna get a 100 miles out of you dogs if I have to drag you.

Posted by: DougM---------------------

Hey

Where is Phelan and where do you ride around there. I have been to Ridgecrest area and love it. I also have ridden Barstow area, Gorman and tried Jawbone (Didn't like all the sand). We Northern California guys like tight twisty, rocky, dirt single track. However I am becoming both a Southern and Northern rider. I'll be in Ridgcrest to ride after Xmas. Kids are off for two weeks.(6 hour drive for us). Like to know where Phelan is.

Thanks

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Hey Doug,

Its just off the 138 about one hour south of Ridgecrest, maybe 1.5 hours, I dont know, its been a whiule since I was in Ridgecrest.
Basically its in the hills at the Cajun pass off the the 15 frwy.
Check in before you come down, i`m sure some of use would be happy to show you around.

Woo-Hoo Longtimes in da house yall,
I personally have been waitin a longtime (sic) for this.....aint never done rode one deem there GAS GAS cicles AaaaHummmm.
And I need Ol89r to watch my back, the DARKSIDE needs you.....
But if he`s gonna make it, I might just have to borrow my buds 400F so that I can keep up.

All we need is a couple more riders and it will be like a big dog chasin his tail. The lead rider will be right behind the tail end guy when we do our loops!

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

Bundy errrrhhhhh Betsy: You know you gets to ride de bike, brah! Only problem is, my knee is killing me. Ortho Wed. morning. I did a kids loop today which was fine, but walking . . . now that's another story. Lifting my bike -- heck, hurts just thinking about it. I'm gonna' try real hard anyhow. Besides, if I come I'll probably be bringing four more -- all solid riders. Then, we'd for sure have a nearly complete loop like you described. . . and I could only do one or two loops and hang out the rest of the time.

This sounds like a blast. No to mention, I've heard so much about the sand hill, I just have to give the GG a shot at it! . . .

Posted by: AMinkman---------------------

I really want to try this ride. I have heard that you have to be DualSport for a lot of that area, is that true? Is the singletrack dirt, or are there singletrack
rock sections? How long is each loop? Where is Wilson Ranch Rd.? My son has a race that day at the Victorville track but it is the last one of the Fall Series an he pretty much has it wrapped up so I think I can bail. Just have to make the awards.

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

AMinkman--most of us will be on 2-stroke green/red sticker bikes. Some of the area we ride on is very undeveloped ( and undevelopable ) private property, and most of the ride is on US Forest Service land. The forest trails are all marked as off-road legal, as is the fire road. That is why we recommend spark arrestors; the rangers have been up there the last two times I've been there, checking for sparkies and registrations.
The terrain is very steep and twisty, with some sand, some hard-pack, and some rocks; a real mix. The loops we are planning are about 40 miles each, through real tight, twisty single track. ( Kinda like a roller coaster!)
Wilson Ranch Road is approx. 1 mile west of Johnson Rd., or 1 1/2 miles west of Sheep creek, off of Phelan Rd. If you head east on Phelan Rd. from Hwy. 395, it'll be almost into the town of Phelan. You'll pass under some large high voltage transmission lines right before Wilson Ranch. There's a left turn lane striped there; turn left and go past all the houses. Continue straight (dirt road), and you'll drop down into a small gully, then back up and over a small hill and you'll see a small natural MX track. This is where we stage.
Bring extra gas and munchies!

Bundy, how was your race. I`m going to try for 100 miles. I might be riding back and forth on the ridge road late in the afternoon. Just in case you can`t drag me the whole way.

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Now you've got me scared :scream: I don't own enough clothes to keep me warm in that kind of weather.

Fri & Sat
Variable cloudiness with a chance of showers. Lows in the lower 20s to lower 30s. Highs in the mid 30s to mid 40s.

Bundy,

Can I huddle up next to the 250 header pipe when I get cold?

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

We rode up there back in Feb. and it was 26 degrees. Slight snow flurries with variable clouds, the best riding I've ever had! As long as it doesn't rain, that'll make it a little damp, still rideable, but damp. It'll be myself, Jr. and his friend (another 2 stroke).

We can grab a four stroke and set it ablaze so we can warm up if we need. No loss, they are usually laying on the ground anyway. We can just splash some gas on them and ignite em!

Here's the directions for those that don't know:

Take the 15 north to the 138 west. Go about 7 miles to sheep creek rd. (just past the 2) and turn right. Take Sheep Creek over the hill for about 2 miles and turn right on Phelan road. Go east for about 3 miles and turn right on Wilson Ranch Road, (by the big overhead powerlines), follow Wilson Ranch Rd. until it ends (about 1 mile) in the dirt parking area. You'll see the track to the left, down in the lower area. We can have someone vallet park the trucks if you want!!

I'm really looking forward to the big group meet, we can take some pix and post them so everyone that didn't go will be jealous! May the 2 stroke prevail

Elk

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

Going to be colder then a well diggers butt. Went to the District race yesterday and you couldnt ask for better weather. Was 70+ degrees until the clouds rolled in around 2PM. Then it got cold. Real cold. How many 40 mile loops we talking about? Im either going to die out their or run out of gas. Depending on the terain I figure were talking 2 hours or so, per lap. As far as the buds are concerned, they both ride 2 smokes but not sure theere coming yet.

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Wow, miss a couple days and look what happens. My monitor went bad last week and I am using this little 15" monitor, so, you guys will have to speak up a little.

Eel. My bud, Mastersandblaster will be riding a WR400 and I will be on a WR400. I got the oil seals for the XR Valdeze but, have not had time to put them in yet. It only holds two quarts of oil, so, it would not be enough for a 100 miler.

Elk. Are you bringing the doughnuts? BTW, whats all this talk about jetting, altitude, spooge, poor gas mileage, is this a two-smoke thing or what????

MXBetsy. Will be gald to watch your back, as long as your not wearing the tutu.

BTW, we may have to eliminate the tutu and thong ritual from our rides. Some of you guys are starting to enjoy wearing them WAY too much.:scream:

Looking forward to riding with you all and meeting the new people.

Oh, and Longtime. What do you mean you don't know what I'm talking about. That Big Bear incident gave a whole new meaning to the term, Butt-ugly. I also heard that there is a new endangered species in Deep Creek now called the blind salamander. BWWWHHHAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Oops, excuse me.

Ol'what's-his-name.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

My bike's not ready yet. Keep your fingers crossed.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Hey Eel, stay off this computer and work on the bike, just be there at 0800!

89r, the best things in life are never easy, the 2 stroke for example, a wonderful machine but it has to be massaged from time to time. I'll take a little jetting and spooging verses the starting technique for the 4 chokes! When you work for something, it seems to mean more to you, I try and tell my kids that but they don't bite! I may just have to bring a box of d-nuts, seeing is that there are so many around me all the time!

I'll bring the fish eye lens so we can get everyone in the picture. I think a great picture would be the whole crew going up the sand hill, at once!

Elk, the public servant

Posted by: Jim Mo 67---------------------

Hey Ol'89er, I've missed about 6 months, I still have a red bike, with only 2 strokes, think you might have room between the sea of blue for the red one, tank of gas, gear bag, one skinny guy, a bag of doritos and a cooler? oh yea, a spark plug or 2 as well. Let me know I would love to go.

I hear Master Blaster has been a little under the weather, maybe he needs some chicken noodle soup or something.

Let me know what time you plan on leaving & if you have room

Jim

Let me start by saying I'm a bit offended that this revolutionary breakthrough in technology that I have personally put countless years of research and development into has been referred to as a trick. This is on the cutting edge of technology. This is the kind of information that you will find in the "Advanced technology & Engineering" forum or even in the pages Popular Science magazine. Now not everyone should try to do this modification themselves. It is very technical and even a bit dangerous. That's right, I said "dangerous". There are a few thing that you must have in order to perform this mod correctly. The first is the obvious, knowledge and skill. I have spent many years perfecting this task therefore I have the skill and I have the knowledge. Second would be the tools and equipment. Now I'm not talkin' about the basic stuff that you would find in the average Joe Smoe's rolling box at the local motorcycle repair shop. I'm talkin' bout some high tech, state of the art stuff that even the guys at NASA or JPL would be impressed with. Lastly is courage and plenty of it. Remember I said this would be a bit dangerous.

For those of you that are still interested in learning this "trick" (as some of those that are technically challenged would call it) and want to be on the inside track of technology just show up a bit early on Saturday and I'll have a short 30 minute "How to" class. I'm not asking for anything in return for my services other than that you be on time and pay attention. You might want to bring a pen and paper to jot down some notes.

One more thing, don't worry about the all the high-tech tools that are needed. I'll bring all the necessary tools. All you need to bring is a clean dry shop rag.

So your saying you've seen me ride

That's usually how my bike ends up. Funny thing I've blown up alot more 2 strokes than four strokes. Mostly because of my past excellent mechanic skills. Yet I've never left a rag in the air box. But Ihave used a piece of window screen are an air filter. And LT still let me work on his new GAS GAS

Eel - The count is even once again. My buddy that rides the 426 broke his femur (sp) Sunday at Elsinore. Anybody out there on Sunday see anything. He can't remeber S**t. He doesn't even remember which track he was on.

Sucks to be him cause his wife HATES , in case you didn't catch that HATES bikes. Could be a slightly used YZ 426 for sale CHEAP.

Scar Tissue - Brother, as long as you don't ride like Bundy you can take the 300 for a spin.

I can't remember who was giving the advice on jetting but I pulled my plug after riding at Ocotilla Wells last week and it was a little on the black side so if you would normally richen it up for the cold then I should be good.... Let me know if I'm not thinking right here cause I would hate to be beaten up the Sandhill by Bundy on the 250.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

That sux.

Every now and again I remember that this sport is D A N G E R O U S. We should all make sure we keep in mind that Saturday's ride is all about everyone having FUN and getting out in one piece - regardless of whether we go 100 miles or 5 miles. We're all gonna be pretty dog-tired at some point on this ungodly ride and that's when the margin for error starts to get small. (Which nutjob came up with this idea anyway ?) Let's ride smart and have a good time. That way we can all keep doing it for many years to come.

(Alright - I'm off the podium .... next speaker)

Okay Mother Eel.

Hope that doesn`t curse me.

Hey Desert_Racer, if your bud is the one I read about on www.proride.com
he got sideways in a corner and carried the sideways over a double and didn't land it. Elsinore snot claims another. Over crowded track with bad dirt, I can't believe they named a motorcycle after that place.

AMinkman - Thanks bro. He could be the one. My buddy is NOT an aggresive rider at all so I'm not sure if he just got out of control and lost it or what.

Anyway I am looking forward to Sat. and riding with all of the So Cal DRN's out there. Should be a blast... A COLD blast but still a blast.

LongTime - Better your 300 than mine

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

My wife HATES that I ride also. She can't stand bikes and whines about it all the time. I've been riding since I was 8, that calculates to 27 years for those that can't count! She should be happy that bike riding is all I do, you don't see me in bars or strip joints! Not that those are bad things but I think she has it pretty good if I don't say so myself. I've made alot of great friends while riding and met even more here. I've been hurt out on the Elsinore snot myself but I've got no one to blame but myself.

This Phelan 1000 or whatever we are calling it will be a blast, I don't care how many miles we go really as long as we all have fun. I hope I don't sound korny but I live to ride. Picture this, you're riding up a great singletrack trail, on the ridge, and you get to the top, pull off your helmet and then you see it, a 6 ft crow sitting there just yards away from your position. You rub your eyes and yes, it's still there so you grab your handy dandy digital photo thingy and try and snap a picture of the beast. When you look at the picture after, all you see is a white flash where that crow was. You have just experienced the motor God, as he watched over you as you transversed his mighty land.

You start your bike and finish your ride, all the time knowing that the motor God is always watching you and protecting you from the evil empire, (no not the 4 strokes), the evil is society whining about the dirt you disturbed on your trek. They will never understand, never.

God speed and see you all on saturday!
The mighty Elk

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Wow, go away for the weekend and look what happens.

Start fires with the 4 strokes? You gotta catch me first brother.
And who started that ugly rumor about me being hard on bikes? Except for that one time whan I ripped my buds shrouds off and pretzeled his bars, Its not my fault that after riding my other buds 250 that the the tranny didnt shift right.:scream: Come on these things only happened since Oct. so its not like they happen often.

Had a great showing at the race, brought home the bacon, although my bike paid the price. The course was about 5 or 6 miles of beach sand. Lets just say that a 250 4 stroke wasnt the ideal ride for this race. I mean 500 2 smokes had trouble in the sand. I rarely could use 5th gear, had to scream it in 4th most of the time. I may be doing a my first 4 stroke top end sone, any of you guys done this before, i`ve never been in a 4 stroke before. Of course this would be a good time for an Eric Gore big bore kit.

Eel add one rider to me ,125, 2 smoke. That might tilt the balance back towards the 2 spoogers.

Desert_racer, I`ll spot you going up the hill, although the 250F makes it fine, your bike should work me. But now lets talk about racing DOWN the hill.

Jim Mo 67. Of course you are welcome to come along. Master Blaster is driving. Do you think your CR250 might get a little nervous sitting between two mighty four strokes? Kinda like the lone sheep in Gomers trailer. That's ok, if it doesn't start there will be enough thumpers there to drag it til it does.

Thumbs. The costume shop called. They want the tutu back. Did you get it out of the dry cleaners yet? I sure hope they were able to get all of the air filter oil out of it.

I was out at Elsinore on Sunday. I saw the EMT put on a temp. cast on a younger kid. 20ish or so. They were in a full size truck???
I did see a few guys go down, but only saw the one guy get EMT help.

If I didn't have to go to a X-Mas party I would be up for this phelan ride!

Does anyone here play Motocross Madness 2?? there is a track called Phelan, Ocotillo Wells and I made 4 tracks with SoCal names...

I am way addicted to Moto Madness 2 - where can I find those trax ?

Hey Eel!! I have tons on my hard drive. I've noticed that the download sites have broken links for the tracks. I'm on a team and you can get my tracks, bike and gear that I have made. http://www.mcmveterans.com/2nd-gear/
Look under Nats for National tracks and look under skins for the bike and gear skins. I will post more links in a few.....:D

Is the Barbie Patrol going to have a bike carrier? Make one heck of a chase vehicle.

No problem elk. I carry a tow strap and for a small charge, (a couple doughnuts), will tow you back to your truck. I have to charge for this service because the tow strap is starting to get all frayed and oil/spooge stained from towing in all of those two-smokes. I don't charge to tow a mighty four-stroke, but then, I've never had to do that.

BWWWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Oops, excuse me. Just had a senior moment.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

LOL!

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

Let me know, Eel. I'm out the door for New York -- won't get back til' late Friday night. I'll try and check the boards, though. And while I've been meaning to clean her up and prep her for sale, but she's had lots of rest, like most four strokes do, once their owners bet a young-man's bike errrrrrr two stroke. In other words, we'll have to warm her up, check fluids etc. in the am.

Ol89r -- man I forgot the HazMat thing. :o

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

Question for whoever's in charge. Okay, question for anybody who has a clue. Okay, scratch that, too. Question for anyone: What is the plan? I know the 8:00 meet up. Then a loop. Does that loop for sure come back to the staging area? Are ostrich burgers for that break, or for after the whole ride?

I may have to hook up for second loop only, if I get home even later than expected from the East coast Friday night.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

We meet at 0800 at the staging area and can do whatever the heck we want after that. We can do a beeline to the cafe first or we can do a loop then start the next loop and it the cafe in between. It really doesn't matter to me, I'm just in for the fun and you better get up early no matter what time you get in. Load your bike and bring it to the airport, that's an idea. Honestly, I don't think there is anything set in concrete other than setting the 4 strokes on fire and warming up a bit!
Elk

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

I actually considered that, Elk. But I'm not sure that if I left my bike in the rental van, at LongBeach, for two days and nights, that it'd be there upon my return.

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

What you dont trust those fine people down in Long Beach? Just because they torched their neighborhood and their DMV during the riots doesnt mean that they would mess with your van. I mean the vehicle may have some burn marks on the outside when you get back, but Im sure the bike will be well protected.

LT I wasn't sure you were making it. But I look forward to seeing the gas in action. And taking a test ride. I've ridden 500's and 250's 2 strokes, and even a quick spin on a 360. But I am really interested in ridding a newer design 300, I've got my sights on it for being, potentially my next bike.

Yes I don't mind playing for both sides (2 and 4 stroke that is)

Are you meeting at the one near the 138 & 15 ? Let me know cause I want to meet up for some grease before the ride.

Terry - Sorry, no such luck with getting all the oil out of the tutu. Don't worry, Scar said that he has one just like it in his briefcase (I didn't ask why) that you can return to the costume shop. I hope you get your deposit back.

BTW - Check with Betsy, I heard he is trying to lose some weight and might be interested in a well oiled tutu (slips on easy) until he looses the unwanted pounds.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Yes my brother, 138 / 15 donalds, 0700-0730. Bike a must, rag is optional, tutu is questionable. Might be a tad nippy for the 2 2! I better stop while I'm ahead and not go there!

Oh yeah Terry can you bring an pair of rings and an extra piston. Maybe a portable Lathe. And an extra back tire, and front and rear tubes. and maybe a pink tutu, and some new fork springs, oh yeah could you also adjust the valves on my bike real quick in the morning. And if its not to much troble come by and load my bike for me, it'd be great if you could also make some eggs.

You gotta love buddies like this.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Why don't we just have a virtual ride. We could all stay in bed at home, or wherever, and enjoy a nice warm virtual ride on the computer. Then, we can post a ride report about how beautiful it was and even make up some funny stories that might have happened! Heck, we can even have riders come from all over the world to join us. This could be the next virtual dirt week!! Thumbs can serve us breakfast in his tutu and bundy can render first aid for poison oak. I love you guys!

I had intended to go to the ROTMX race at the Comp. Park vet track (I call it the Geezer's pee wee track, because it's so small) Sat. morning and then hang around to watch the Mini-Me Micro Moto Nationals Sat. afternoon. The afternoon race will have adults racing XR50's, 70's and TTR90's, with Travis Pastrana racing and Mini-Me as a guest, but now my 10 year old has made other plans.

I didn't want to race on the Geezer's Pee Wee track anyway, so it looks like I'll be at Phelan...

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

LT. Got ya covered on the air tank.

Thumbs. Can't find the left hand plug wrench, musta put it in the right hand tool box by accident. As far as the bucket of steam goes, you will have to check with LongTime. He is in charge of all the hot air around here.

elk. If we did the virtual thing we would be just like those other dirt bike web sites. Might not be a bad idea if it snows.

Scar. LOL. Sounds just like any other Sunday morning.

While it's true that your strokers will be throwing large projectiles, the mighty 360 will be throwing with greater velocity! Just ask oldandslo!

Posted by: holeshot---------------------

If this is ride goes to the same area as the 138 trails go, then there should be the same hillclimbs. It may be a good time to see if four strokes prevail over the two smokers - maybe a little uphill drag racing or hill climbing contest?

I've have old plastic, graphics and mangled levers right now, so I'm not worried about scratchin' or bendin' stuff...

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

A better contest would be to count the number of bikes present - then let each rider take a shot on each guy's bike - then see how many successful climbs each guy had.

I've climbed that sand hill on my 125 ... have you ?

Of course that would have to be another day - since we're trying 100 this ride. Neat idea though.

Alright, Whats this I hear about you guys riding in my backyard again?
I'll be riding a '00 wr400 to lend a hand to the thumper clan.
Just a reminder for those who don't know, I live right there, so tools,
aircompressor, emergency bathroom, phone etc is available. (just take your boots off or the wife will skin ya)
Riding has been good lately. Gonna be cold! The name of the cafe is "Mtn Top Cafe". Good chicken too.
All riders should be able to make that treck. Any questions you can email at bulldog@snowline.net. I don't like
posting here because for some reason, it takes a loonnngggg time for the screens to load. So I will see you all on
Saturday, weather permitting. Aw hell, me and elk will be there anyway- BRING IT ON!

later
Wayne

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

Ain't no cold gonna scare me away--I'm wearin' 2 jerseys, a hooded sweat-shirt, and maybe my parka!
Soil is excellent right now---dry on the surface, but plenty of moisture half an inch down. That means all you fast guys will have the wet stuff un-covered by the time I come through.
I would be more than happy to drag race some thumpers uphill---trouble is, my riding style (or lack there-of) requires that I use the entire trail on my way up!
It's good to see Wayne (another local) will be joining us. With the list of riders growing the way it has, our conga line should stretch the length of the ridges by the time we all get going!
Hey, I am game for some side by side sand hill action!
Well, I don't have access to the site until I get home tomorrow night, so I guess I'll read all the last responses of the (hardly) working then.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Wayno, great to see you'll be joining us, even if you're on a 4 smoke!

I'm with desert racer, don't let the 4 croakers ahead of you, we'll use the whole trail if we have to! I say we all charge the sand hill together and snap a photo.

I see there will be nice pre-mix, I mean mix of bikes. Ktmboy has the rope around his waste to pull the dead bikes back and Wayne has the casa just in case we get chilled, I hear he'll let you jump in his jacuzzi for a fee!

I'd like to let you all take a shot on my bike but it'll probably buck you off, it's not uses to strangers, especially OLD ones!

Holeshot, I worry about you with the bent up and broken stuff! A man with nothing to lose is dangerous!!

I say this is a making of a beautiful ride, can I say "beautiful"? Alright, this ride will kick butt, how's that! It'll be cold so I'm doubling up on the chonies and Bundy, you might want to wear two thongs!
Elk

Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------

Alright, Holeshot's coming. Hey Holeshot, did you ever get a muffler on that thing. My ears are still ringing from the Big Bear ride.

Talked to Mastersandblaster yesterday, he said, "blah, blah, blah, blah, I don't feel good, blah, blah, blah, don't think I'm going to make it, blah, blah, blah, blah," or something like that.

BadAndy isn't going to make it either.

How about Placelast, mtngoat, JPivey, KTMrad, Fred2??????
