Anyone familiar with parts availability and or affordability of these big air cooled singles as used in older Can-Ams, KTM's, CCM, ATK, etc? I understand they area fairly robust engine but also heard parts could be an issue? I have a line on what sounds like a pretty good deal but wonder if it might be a money pit!

Go to a book store and find some aviatio magazines. I know at one time when I was racing Can-Ams there were companies that claimed that if you could read the part number on the casting, they could get the part.

ATK is supposedly still alive and online. Maybe you could find a local dealer that way. www.atkusa.com

Also you can check with vintage dealers such as http://www.motocross.com/vintage/canam/canam.htm

If you buy an old thumper, check the cam belt for wear before you ride too much. I don't know how often people changed them but Mine was reliable and I kept a close eye on it so I wouldn't have to buy a valve train.

rotax still supplies parts for most of their 4 stroke engines. There's a company called Ron wood racing products that deals in mostly 4 stroke parts. There contact info is available from the classic can-am site. http://www.motocross.com/vintage/canam/canam.htm

Ron Wood Racing in California carries Rotax parts, generally will ship the same day. I'm not exactly sure, but I think they're website is rotax.net.

I just picked up a CCM with the 605 Rotax and before I go and hurt myself, does anyone know a good starting procedure for this beast.
I have never owned a left side kicker big bore 4 stroke.

There should be a peep hole (site glass) on the side of the engine where the cam belt is. Pull the compression release in and turn the motor over untill the white dot shows in the glass. Let go of the release and give a good firm kick.

Other tricks I have used on big bikes:

If it won't start after kicking a while, pull in the release and kick it through a half dozen or more times. This will clean out the cyclinder if it is flooded. Kick normally a few times then with the choke,

If that doesn't work, lay the bike on it's side till the carb dribbles. Then try to start it. Sorta like priming an old Bing Carb.

On my Husky if it is having a bad day, I will pump the throttle a few times (only works on pumper carbs). That puts a charge of gas in the cyclinder also.

If you have troubles kicking it over, just lightly hold the compression release. That'll bleed a few psi off the compression. The 410 has an outomatic release that does basically the same thing.

Good luck and keep the seal around the shift shaft clean.

Thanks, she fired on the first kick, using the site glass method.
