I know this subject has been beaten to death but I may have a different combination of modifications to suggest.
After my first service (20 hours), I modified the throttle stop,
disconnected the grey wire and removed the air box cover. That combination of changes, dramatically increased power at every RPM, eliminated the midrange flatspot and maybe improved throttle response too without any negative side effects and without increased noise or any new parts. Now, getting the front end in the air to clear obstructions can be done at any RPM using throttle only in the first couple of gears.

Hey Scrawshaw,
How do you like the WR, I've only ridden the YZ ( and loved it). But everyone tells me the WR is better for trails with its heavier flywheel and all. I'm a big guy and was a little worried about the power with the wide ratio. What do you think.

Hey Scrawshaw, do the YZ cam timing mod. I almost looped out my WR yesterday in fifth when I tugged back a little while standing. I was trying to get the front wheel to clear a five yard wide dip and almost got more than I bargained for when the rear wheel went down into the dip. Hows that for power?
I've done the grey wire, throttle stop, airbox with twinair filter, and the YZ timing was probably the best mod. It's very easy too. BigGunn pipe coming this week.
Scar tissue...Fonseca ran his YZF250 last year with an eight ounce flywheel. I have no problem running toe to toe with YZFs on MX tracks and I can say adios when we hit fifth gear straights. The YZF runs out of speed pretty quickly. The wide ratio and heavier flywheel are assets in my opinion. If all you do is MX though, the YZ has slightly stiffer suspension and that may make it more attractive to you. Its also about ten pounds lighter, even when the WR is stripped of it's lights and kickstand. An aluminum muffler on the WR will cut the difference to about six or seven pounds.
Thump on!
