Best place to get new jets for my XR400

OK, so I am hearing all of these great ideas about helping the XR400 breathe better. Removing the snorkel, Unifilter, unplugging exhaust header pipes and muffler baffles/ tips.... I can't wait to do all of this to my 2000 model that I just bought totally stock.
I think that re-jetting after all of this would be a good idea--if not really needed.
My questions are:
1) Where should I get these 60 and 160 jets from? Dealer, or web? If web, what sites? Phone #'s of good suppliers is fine also.
2) How much ARE these babies?
3) Hour-wise, how long does it take to do this myself? Is this tricky if I do it myself. (I am not a moron, but I have never worked on a carb before).
Thanks very much for anyone's replies that have re-jetted.
Especially if you have a good source that I can get these jets from.

I'd just get them from a dealer. Keihin jets shouldn't cost any more than about 5 bucks each. I'd guess it would take no more than 30 minutes to get the carb off, switch out the jets, and put it back on. Actually, you could just take the float bowl off while the carb is still on the bike and re-jet. Kind of a pain to get the little plastic anti-slosh thing (that goes on the main jet) to stay in place though.

Hey,
You can get jets from your dealership, or bajadesigns.com, or xrsonly.com. Even places like Chapparral would have the jets you need. They are very inexpensive, and even easier to install. The hardest part is getting the carb out of the frame. If you unbolt the rear subframe, pipe, and loosen the airboot from the carb, you can swing the subframe up exposing the rear shock. Loosening the intake boot going into the motor, you should be able to wiggle the carb out the back, along the right side of the rear shock. I actually got mine out once with the throttle cables still attatched. I pulled it out of the left side of the bike, but it was a major pain.

Remove the bowl of the carb, and unscrew the two brass? jets. Screw the new ones in. When installing the jets, they will bottom out on the seat, do not overtighten, the brass? is soft and easily damaged. Just tighten until they lightly seat, reinstall the bowl, and install the carb back in the bike. You may need to readjust the pilot screw after rejetting also. Other than that, you will be good to go. Pop a new plug in while you are at it. Good luck.

Hey,
By the way, while you are getting jets, it would be nice to have a range of jets to play with. The 160/60 may be good, but a 162/60 may be better, or a 160/62. I'm not sure what the next leaner one is (158?), if you can afford it, get a few of each, leaner and richer. Along with the needle clip position, you should really be able to dial in your carb. Get new plugs, and read them after short rides, whitish colored is too lean, black and wet is too rich, greyish/brownish is just about perfect. It's a trial of patience, but when you get it just right, you will be rewarded with very snappy throttle response. Keep in mind, a tad richer is better than a tad lean, and while it's cold, air is more dense, so your mixture will be leaner. So good jetting during the winter, might be too rich during the summer months. Good luck.

Its actually quite easy to get the carb out just by removing the seat & tank, then disconnecting the cables.

SnaggleXR4, you are awesome! Thanks for all the good info/ detail.
Big help. I got 60/160 jets today from a local dealership. $5 each!! Cheap!
Thanks for the detail on how to judge lean/ rich plugs. I was wondering how I would know if I am running lean/ rich....
If I am running just right now, I might get a 158 for the hot Texas summer months, since you said hot weather tends to run richer.
Thanks again for all the help.
***Also, BigBore, thanks for your input on the alternative way to get to the carb.
