XR200 running rich

My son has a '94 XR200 that has always run extremly rich (black smoke, black plug). I've even removed the airbox cover and exhaust baffle with no change. I've removed the air cleaner also (only for a short clean ride) with no change. Tonight with the bike running I turned the fuel mix screw all the way in and the bike kept running. Is it time for a carb rebuild? I'll probably tear into the carb in a week or two so any help is appreciated.

First of all you can rejet the carb, why dont you try this?? Have you also tried to move the needle clip up and down, you might just need to slide the needle down a slot or two. Also when you turn the air screw in, your making the mixture RICHER. Remember that burning oil also causes this condition (black dirty plug) and runnin it without an air filter would cause it! good luck!

Yea, the XR2 comes very rich from the factory. I'd try dropping down a size on the main to start with (the main is richer than the needle normally).
You didn't mention your elevation, but if you normally ride at higher elevations (over 1500'), then I'd say to drop the needle one position also.
If the bike's been running rich since you got it, the muffler is probably pretty gunked up, and should be cleaned. You can remove the end of the stock muffler and clean it (follow the instructions in the manual).
If the rejetting doesn't work, then you might need a carb rebuild, but that's pretty rare with these machines.
If you are unfamiliar with the XR carb design, our website has some basic carb info which might help you out. You can find it here:

Hope this helps.
