First post here guys!!!!
I just got a 1996 XR 650L....its not been running for a while, and need some advice....
I started it and it runs...But it wont idle when the choke is off!
I put new gas in the tank with some carb cleaner mixed in....I didnt change the plug yet,..
I rode it for a while to try and get the cleaner thru the carb, but it still dies when it trys to idle...and it pops alot when rolling off the gas.....
What should i look at first? this is my first 4 stroke, so need help.....
Also whats the first mods for the motor that should be done right away........will be all woods riding...no street!
sorry so long, .......thanks

Go ahead and clean out the carb, from the way it sounds your slow jet is probly clogged. Get all the gunk out of it and make sure that you can pass air threw all the jets. Make sure the hole for the air screw is not stopped up. this is an easy thing to do, dont worry. Just be careful and dont use wire to clean out the jets, it may tear them up. (make the holes bigger)

Danny........thanks!
Any possible ideas on some easy bolt-ons.....smog pump block off etc....

Well...the block off of the smog pump is a start...that will save you about 6 ounces....hmmmmm 60 lbs to go. I guess if your not using it for street at all..change out the rear fender to an MX fender that would save some weight. Take the turn signals off. Mirrors off. Passenger footpegs off. Performance wise....a good slip on muffler (supertrap is cheap and gets the job done on the XRS) would save some weight and also give alot more power. WAIT....I know why i know so much about this...lol.. I did this to an old XR250L to race Cross country races...Just ask Mion Hill..he will tell ya about me.
