TORO Race #105 - Thurber

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

Should be a dandy. Thurber is supposed to be a great property. The old man says that they used to race enduros out there back in the day, said the property is a lot of fun to ride on. Anybody have any other info? Is there a Pre-Race Recon report from Patman, or will there be one?

Who's all comin? Taraker? DA? Jeff? Smitty? Mhall? Penguin? JMD? Anyone? Anyone?

Posted by: darnjr---------------------

I'll be doing some suspension testing and tuning at a private track this weekend. And I've got the pumper carb squared away so it won't choke on the start anymore. (my pumper wasn't pumping) Still no Vortex gloves, but I'll be ready.

Posted by: jeffd---------------------

I'll be there for sure!

So far all I have heard `bout Thurber is that it is loaded with thorns! :scream:

You're kidding, right? Ever ridden Thurber? Think you had problems with flats last weekend? Wait until those Mesquite thorns get through with you. You better flat-proof everything! It should be fun though!

Dude,
You're not gettin Skeered are ya? Get some slime. You'll be fine.

Posted by: taraker---------------------

Here is my question posed at Texas Off-Road

Quote:

So I have had two bottles of slime in my toolbox for about a year now. Based on what you say about Thurber I started to wonder about shelf life of slime. Anybody have any ideas how long this stuff says functional?

Posted by: JMD---------------------

Hey, YZguy: Jimmy and I will be out at Thurber, all slimed and ready. Hope it's as much fun as Jacksboro was. Loved those hills and the rocks. Wouldn't call the hills gnarly, though--a little too easy. I'd like to see just a bit more technical sections, to make it interesting.

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

DA, I too will have some new boingers ready for the next race. Can't wait to test them out during practice :silly:

JMD, who's Jimmy?

Posted by: JMD---------------------

He's my son, 16 years old, No. C326. He made only one lap in Jacksboro, because his fork seals dumped every bit of oil while tied down on the trailer, and we couldn't do anything to get them fixed before the race. One lap of slamming into every rock and sharp bump with no suspension was all he could stand. He figured that the five points he'd get for last place weren't worth riding that thing for two more laps. I rode the bike afterward, and he made the right choice. It was dangerous.

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

Another 16 year old eh? Is he a junior or a sophmore? Lookin forward to seein all yall at the race.

Posted by: penguin---------------------

penguin and mhall will be there. penguin is without a bike right now. something knocked a hole in my clutch cover at Jacksboro during practice and got the inner case as well. I am still negotiating with Kawasaki about getting it fixed under warranty

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

bumpity bump bump

Posted by: JMD---------------------

Jimmy's a junior at Berkner High. We went to Muenster yesterday, met some nice folks we had been corresponding with for a while, and rode all over that place. What a great day! We started talking with EnduroNut, and he has us thinking about going to the TSCEC enduro this weekend rather than Thurber. It's a full day's ride rather than just an hour and 20 minutes. Haven't made our minds up yet. But I'd like you to meet Jimmy; I'm sure we'll meet up one of these days, YZguy.

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

The things about enduros is spark arrestors though. Don't have one, can't afford one. Also, they're more expensive and tend to be farther.

Posted by: JMD---------------------

Yeah. It's a six-hour drive to Post. I just saw that. On the other hand, they hold a Grand Prix on Saturday, then the enduro on Sunday. That's a lot of racing. I don't know about that long drive, though. We'll just have to see.

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

After practice we all needa get together or something, do a little hangin out. I can't believe Twinnie is copin out on us....

I can't wait to try out my new springs at Thurber. Hopefully Brian (SMS) gets finished with my bike soon, I'm having some withdrawl.

Posted by: Smitty---------------------

I won’t make this one, but I’ve got Bonita on my calendar. I can’t justify driving to Thurber when the weather is this nice. I can either spend 8 hrs driving there and back or I can ride Saturday and Sunday in 65 degree weather. I’d rather be on my bike than in my truck!

By the way, you guys ought to race the OCCRA opener at Murray on February 24th. The more the merrier and the money from Murray is what funds our season.

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

I don't think that I'm gonna make it to Murray. Too far and at Gilmer the TCCRA is having it's opener. Starring Mike Lafferty and Dick Burleson. I'm just going to watch that race and practice on Saturday.

Posted by: IBWFO---------------------

The only time you wil need a spark arrestor is when the enduro is in the National Forest. Enduros are a blast, and you will get your share od riding in. Post is awesome, a little bit of everything. Thurber was a really fun place too.
Slime will last years, I'm still using a 5 year old gallon container.
With the rain, it should be just about perfect for Sunday.
Regards

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

IBWFO, the flyer for post says that spark arrestors are required. Is it at a national forest?

Posted by: IBWFO---------------------

No, but they never check. It is private property but has been dry.
We used to take a piece of screen wire and a hose clamp and put it over the end of the exhaust, then take it off after they checked. I went last year on the 426 and they didn't even check.
I will check with some of my buds and get back with ya tonight.
If they get some rain it will be an awesom ride. One of the best enduros in the circuit.

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

That's what my dad said they used to do when they raced Caney Creek, which was like the only one that required a SA back then. Still, we won't be attending Post, because we have commited to TORO. We're helping out too, so we need to be there. Oh well, maybe some other time.

Posted by: scott_ktm---------------------

Anyone going to practice Sat and give a review? I can't go to practice, kids b-day party, and would like to know what to expect. Don't know if I can get up early enough to make the parade lap, I need lots of beauty sleep. :scream: I wish I could have made the last race but that darn broken colar bone did not feel too good. Looking forward to racing, have not riden since Dec 29, when I had a little mishap.

Posted by: yzguy15---------------------

If you're real sweet to him taraker prolly would. He usually goes home on Saturday night and sleeps in his own bed like a little baby. The rest of us real men will be at the track. No computer access for me.

Posted by: scott_ktm---------------------

PLEASE-O-PLEASE. I'll bring some ScoobyDoo cake, if the curtain apes don't eat it all.

Posted by: taraker---------------------

Did I hear a food bribe?

Posted by: darnjr---------------------

I won't be out on Sat either. Taraker, you owe me for getting your sign up at Muenster. I'll expect a full report before I retire for the evening on Satuday night. Over and Out.

Maybe. Just don't ask me for any punch. I should have a malted beverage to wash it down with though. :D

Posted by: taraker---------------------

Well, I would never disappoint my signup clerk, would I?:D

Posted by: taraker---------------------

Okay, here is the promised track report.
Track is 70% hard pack, some really nice loamy stuff that is good to catch your breath on, then back into the rocks. Did I mention the rocks? Not as many rocks as I thought but enough the I am in "let me just finish without wasting a rim" mode. Very much like Twin Hills terrain.

Look forward to seeing everybody there tomorrow. Now I'm going to bed.

Posted by: scott_ktm---------------------

Thanks. By the way, is it rocky?

Posted by: will pattison---------------------

all youse that missed this event should shed a tear right now...it was that good. well, at least from my perspective both as a racer and the guy in charge. we had perfect weather, almost no dust on sunday morning, and the leaders in the a/b program put on a near 30 mph average! there were a few rocky sections, but the 75 mph sections out in the grass more than made up for it.

the bonus was the restaurant and the historic location. we basically camped in the middle of what used to be a town, and the eatery was just a few steps away. we packed it with racers (and some chicks dancing on the tables) on saturday night and got great exposure (almost literally) for the sport. the owners were very pleased with the business that 312 racers brought them, and we look forward to going back next year.
