Phelan-the ridges & singletrack

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

I'll be at Phelan on Sunday, 1/27/01, to ride the ridges and single-track with desert_racer.
We're meeting at 9:00 A.M., the usual staging area at the end of Wilson Ranch Rd.
Any of the SoCal wrecking crew that are willing to show are invited to attend. Bundy? Eel? Oldn'stealth? Jeff? Boodac? Aholeshot? Ol'thumper-pilot? LT? Scarface? Turtle/Elk?

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

All right boys.. Pony up... Daddy's got a kitched pass and wants to go out and play. Lets get this thing going... Who's in??

Posted by: Unit74---------------------

How bout going to the Nat Hare & Hound at Luecern? I'll be there!

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Sounds fun but I am saving my dough for the Reno trip in Feb. Looks like trails only for me for now..

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

If I can work out the details with the kids having to be somewhere Sunday morning I might be able to make it out for a few hours. Ill let you guys know around Thursday. I definately need some time in the saddle.

Posted by: JPIVEY---------------------

I'll be out at Lucerne also, this is supposed to be a nasty one

Posted by: JWW---------------------

Ok

Im either going to be at the club enduro this weekend or moving my grandparents into thier new house.

If I end up doing the move it should only be Saturday. So I should be able to make the ride.

I really really really need to get out and ride. I think I have only been out 1 time since the beginning of December.

Wheres Elk???? I need you to look at my jetting.

Posted by: a454elk---------------------

Hey Jeff, bring it over to Elsinore on Friday, not sure if I can make it out Sunday. I'll check if the slot is open!
Elk

Posted by: JWW---------------------

Unfortunately I used up all of my time off during the xmas season.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

... would love to but the first Club enduro is that day. I'd like to do all of the races this year ... I'm hoping to get off to a good start.

I went to Rowher Flat today and boy was it fun. Check "Ride Reports". The bike is running great !!!

Posted by: scar tissue---------------------

I'll be with Thumbs at the enduro.

If I ever get my bike back from the shop.

I'm trying to work a deal on a new 2002 yz250f. But won't have it by this weekend. Besides I'd want to break it in right.

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Well,
I have a layover in Charlote NC.
Thats as close as I get on this trip.
What you got up your sleave?

I would like to meet up with you southeast guys, was hoping to go to the spode fest in Bamy, but with it being right after Bikeweek, I dont think I can swing it.

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Bundy,

I'm 90% decided to go YZ over WR. May I ask why you had your YZ susp. redone. Did you want stiffer spring or just different valving? From sitting on them the YZ feels OK stock. the WR is a little softer(possibly too soft). Usually I have to go to stiffer springs but was thinking the stiiffer yz stockers would be ok for a heavier guy.

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

The reason that he got his suspension done is

1) Shear mass :scream:
2) the speed that he hits obsticles.
3) Shear mass :scream:

Just kiddin big guy....

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Last night,
GSR says to TTRGuy: "Do you have any plans this weekend, hot dates, whatnot?"
TTRGuy replies: "I do on Sunday"
GSR strains her brain :think : "FOOTBALL?!" grumble, grumble.......
TTRGuy: Big Grin

We're looking to ride somewhere on Saturday maybe.

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

PAAAAALLLLEEEEESSSSSEEEE..

Football over riding.

TTRGuy does not deserve a women with your qualities GSR. Leave his butt at home and come down and ride with us on Sunday... I'll take care of ya sweety.

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

I'll have my VCR set-up to record at least one game, (Rams/Eagles), and I just won't speak to anyone until I view the tape!

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Rex, are you TRYING to get me in trouble!!
I didn't say he turned down riding for football. If we had plans to ride somewhere I'm sure he would tape it. He did last weekend. We don't have any plans as of yet, but I think Phelan would be too far for a day ride, especially on a Sunday.

Its about time you got the hint, maybe I will join you now.

Just kidding , I couldn't resist.

Posted by: thumbs---------------------

Amiee & Eddie - This is where I'll be on Saturday and Sunday.

http://pw2.netcom.com/~sorudne/events.htm

Come on out and join the fun. I'm sure that there will be a few other DRNers there. (The Eel, Placelast, CptJack?, Holeshot?)

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Eddie..
Just kiddin big guy.. I just couldn't resist. You are one lucky guy my friend. You guys have fun whatever you decide to do but we will miss you.

Posted by: holeshot---------------------

I'll probably make it to the TWMC enduro in Feb (El Mirage). I can't think of anything that drives me more nuts than an Enduro, that's why I keep coming back.......

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Good man Holeshot. Believe me - the frustration I think is not uncommon. Even the best guys in the club occasionally DNF - check the results, you'll see.

I'll be there for sure. 1st club race of the season and I can't wait.

So Aimee - where are you moving to ?

Also, I have next Friday off - anyone want to go out and ride that day or on that weekend ?

Posted by: mxbundy---------------------

Scar,

When you weigh as much as I do, you have to revalve and respring. Ther just is no way for me to ride it stock. When they are brand new, I can get about one or two rides in before the susp. "BREAKS" in and gets too soft.
Thats why the YZ feels firm in the showroom, all the seals, bushings and bearings are all new and tight. After a couple of rides they loosen up and get free.At your size and weight, I would recomend a good setup. You see the 250F is set up for 120 to 140 pound guys who race the 125 class. Not 6' something 200# + guys like us. And that goes for any bike. No bike stock will have a stiff enough setup for guys like us.
If you dont believe me, next time we ride, take my bike for a spin, and not just on a dirt road. Take it down the nastiest trail you can find, it will open your eyes.
I believe that everyone can and will benifit from a custom suspension set up for there weight and riding ability, regardless of what brand or size of bike.
Trust me on this one, there is simply not a better mod you can do to any bike, period!

I don't know betsy.. I replaced the purple powerband in my pumkin with a pink powerband and it really livened it up boy. I can barely hang on to the thing now.

Posted by: *william*---------------------

Hey! ktmboy and D-R! Count me in. I wanna check out Phelan.

I found the general area you guys are talking of, but directions would be helpful. I'm coming from Redlands, so I'm going up the pass and ???

And just wonderin' any of you guys ride the Gilman Springs / Jack Rabbit Trail area down here? It's one of my favorite places and practically my back yard. We should have a SoCal DRN ride there and see who's really good at hills!

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

william - I will send you directions tongith when I get home. I don't have them here at work with me.

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

But can anyone else give it a go on Saturday?

Posted by: scar tissue---------------------

Bundy,

I absolutly agree, Thanks for the imput.
I had the susp done on my xr600 and the klx was already done. The XR was soooo much better afterward, the KLX I purschased and it was already done and I really like it. I just didn't know about how well the new bikes were set. I went to race techs web site and they too recomended stiffer springs. I'll let you know if I work out the deal on the new one.

Just post it and we will come.

90% of us love to find new places to ride. Feb 16-17th would be great.

Well, it ain't exactly a "Designated OHV Area" if you know what I mean. But we've never had any trouble yet - knock on wood - and most of the nitwits (FMXer's) still try and ride Beaumont. It's got awsome hills and single track valleys. I'll see what I can do; this kitchen pass cost me a shopping trip to the outlet stores.

And D-R, I've decided I can't go riding with you, as after looking at your website, I'm afraid you might be my evil twin!

Just kidding, I'm looking forward to it. And congratulations on the little squirt! We had a girl, oh 7 months ago, and I thought I was crazy to build her a
website :D

Our crew has been known to facture the occassional law. Especially elk. Your not fending us off that easy, we smell the blood of a new riding area.

Re: Beaumont,

Hey we ride there on occasion.

Re: shopping trip,

Just max out the credit cards ondirt bike gear then she can't use them. Hey, it works for me.

Posted by: Boodac---------------------

"Yet" thats ok William when the law shows up we will just point at you and say you made us ride here. <just kidding>
I have a full plate for Sunday but one way or another I need to ride. Im still sketchy for sunday but Im working hard to be there. Nothings worse than being stuck working or running around when others are having a blast riding.

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Hey how come I always have to be the evil one?

Cool site William. It is amazing how those little bundles of joy take over our lives. It is a great thing though.

Directions:
15 north to the 138 west
Go about 7 miles to Sheep Creek Rd (right).
Go about 2 miles to Phelan Rd. (right)
Go east about 3 miles to Wilson Ranch Rd. (right)
Follow Wilson Ranch Rd. (turns into a dirt rd) till it ends (about 1 mile) in a dirt parking area. You'll see the natural terain track to the left down in the lower area.

Looking forward to Sunday.

Posted by: oldandslo---------------------

Count me in. I was waivering between this ride and the Enduro. I know my way around Phelan enough to keep from getting real lost. See you at 9 Sat.

Posted by: oldandslo---------------------

I mean Sunday. I can`t go Sat. Passing up football for riding. What has happened to me.

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Don't worry about getting lost/left. There ain't gonna be anybody out there that's freaky fast as it looks like they will all be racin. Just us slow goers ... Should be a good ride.

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

This ride is lookin' pretty orange!

Posted by: ktmboy---------------------

I'm afraid I'll be bowing out. This flu just won't let go of me, and every time I think I'm getting better it gets worse. This sucks! I was really looking forward to doing this with this group of riders.
You boys have fun, and watch out for Mr. Ranger--he likes to come out on Sundays.
