WTB: Used Bike for $1000 or less

I have two friends that are wanting to get into riding... both of them need bikes. They are on pretty tight budgets.

First, we are in the Southeast U.S. and would rather not have to ship a bike... but we could if the price is right.

Both of them (and myself for that matter) are begginer riders, so we don't have to have a superfast bike.

They are really pretty open to whatever bike they get... they just want something to get going.

Please post anything that you might have, or any place that you can point me to so that I can look for the sued bikes.

Thanks,
Krioni

Posted by: Krioni---------------------

I have sent your offer to my friends to see if that's like what they want...

Anyone else?

Posted by: Ensign---------------------

There are pretty many bikes on Cycle Trader (www.cycletrader.com)

That's a pretty tough price point. I'm not saying you can't find something that's decent for that price, but it is pretty hard.

Good luck!

dietrich33b, you're got an honest to goodness sonic 500?
what kinda shape is it in? How's it run? Pics?? I'm a die hard can-am fan in case you didn't know

Posted by: Milquetoast---------------------

I thought the Sonic was a 560? I think my older brother had one years ago when I as about eye-level to the spark plug.

Posted by: sfc crash---------------------

krioni, the deals on those bikes are good, especially if you get accurate info from the seller.i'd trust somebody on this board before ever buying a used bike from a stranger.i bought a '93 kdx200 for 750 4 yrs ago. long story short, after puting over 2k of parts and shop repair work it still didn't run well. turns out it was an '83 or something. i ended up giving it to my buddy, he did a serial number check, and has a buddy who'll work on it free. i'd jump on the rm and klx, rm parts are EVERYWHERE and cheap, and the klx is a 4stroke and once a 4stoke engine is fixed, they're pretty tuff. good deals.:D

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

milquetoast,
they made both 500's and 560's. Believe it or not engine parts are still available for these engines, the rest (frame parts, etc.) have to be searched for. A good running and mostly complete 500 really interests me.

Posted by: dietrich33b---------------------

Yep its a sonic 500 82 is the only year they made the 500,
Sorry no pics but bike is in good overall shape, already contacted ron woods about a 580 kit right around $450.00 I would like to keep her but I have to many projects and am running low on funds for them

Posted by: Krioni---------------------

dietrich, check your email.

Thanks

Posted by: Krioni---------------------

Can you let me know what kind of shape the RM is in? Would this be a good bike for a beginner? One of the guys is a pretty big guy (6' 2", 225 pounds probably).

Thanks

Posted by: dietrich33b---------------------

Suspension work just done Total rebuild and new fork springs and new rear shock spring set up for a 215lb. novice/beginner, also have stock springs, new top end 3 rides ago. The deal with this bike is it was my spare for my buddy who lives up north and comes down to visit about twice a year. We are getting him a YZ250f to keep here. He probably has about 6 total hours on the bike since suspension and top end. He probably has 60 hours total ride time in his life so yes it is an excellent beginner bike. I have ridden it twice to get the jetting straight and though it wont out run my 520 It deffinetly a steal.

Posted by: Krioni---------------------

Thanks for the info.

I am definetely going to push him to jump on this deal... because I believe it's a good one and I trust the people on this forum a lot.

I will get in touch with him tomorrow about this.... I will be in Dallas next weekend... how far is it to where you are?

Thanks again!

Posted by: dietrich33b---------------------

You are in luck. I will be racing in Fort worth next weekend

Posted by: Krioni---------------------

That's an awasome coincidence!!!!

I will talk to my firend Monday and really try to get him to make a decision on the bike. Can you point me to a picture on the net that *looks* like your bike (i.e. it is the same model, size, etc.) so that I can show him.

Also, can you email me and tell me what all kind of work that KLX needs, and what kind of condition it's in, if it runs, etc.

Thanks

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

I'd love to make you an offer on the Sonic, but I finally found another motor for my ASE and have got a pile of cash in this stupid honda I'm working on. Wouldn't be interested in a trade would ya?
Check out this Sonic though, pristine condition..

Sorry sold the RM250 . hey SMB that is on clean sonic, mine does not look that good although it could with a little TLC

Posted by: dietrich33b---------------------

noticed you got a CR144, had one for a abought two months The bike ripped but I could not keep a crank in it,
What are you thinkin bout tradin?

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

the CR is my ongoing project bike. The transmission gears are a little out of whack. I've currently got $1000 in the motor alone. The bike runs and moves perfectly right now except for first gear. It runs very strong, fresh EG 144 kit and mo better everywhere porting. Engine has less than 2 hours on a complete total rebuild. New crank, mains, all seals, shift drum, clutch center hub, piston and rings and plating, all various springs (kickstarter etc.) are new. Have all the recipts. I'd really really like to work out a deal for the Sonic though, I had thought about trading the CR for a 4 wheeled offroad vehicle :scream:
Email me with some specifics if you might be interested smbracing@bright.net
