Eel looking for a SoCal ride - Feb 1st, 2nd or 3rd

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Alright I've got Friday off so who wants to ride ... I'll do a Friday & Saturday gig, a Friday only gig, a Saturday only gig, or a Sunday only gig. (Feb 1, 2, 3)

Any ideas out there from the Wrecking Crew ? My new boss starts the following Monday so I want a nice and refreshing weekend ... you know, I want to be feeling my best.

Posted by: Gyrros---------------------

I just got my kx265 up and running today and need a good ride. I'm in for, sat or sunday.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Cool ... that's one.

Posted by: Unit74---------------------

There should be a D-37 race if your interested. Check it out here! It sounds like fun!

Posted by: placelast---------------------

Eel: where ya gonna be riding (Rowher, Gorman), and when? We might be able to make it Sunday the 3rd, but the 1st & 2nd are out....

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

Sorry bro but I don't think I'll get another kitchen pass until the Reno trip. Mama's not looking forward to 4 days of watching the little one ALONE while daddy's in Reno playing with the boys....

Posted by: Gyrros---------------------

I could do Gorman Sunday.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Ditto on Gorman.

D_R ... you definitely don't want to miss Reno. We'll catch each other another time.

Not me, no how, no way! That's not just any old Sunday, it's SUPERBOWL SUNDAY!

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

Good point ... but considering how I fared at the enduro I think I could use the practice.

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Pfft! Super Bowl Sunday....paleeeease! All the more reason to go riding! Hey Eric, if you're going to Gorman, I may be in. It should be nice there with the rain we're getting.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

I'm in for Gorman on Sunday.

So where to meet and what time ? Say 9 AM at the front parking lot ?

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Just lemme check with TTRGuy tonight and I'll let you know tomorrow.

Posted by: Gyrros---------------------

Sound good Eel. I will be there at 9am

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Hey Eric, Eddie wants to go. He wants to camp on Sat night so we can ride both days so we may be there Sat. and Sunday. If we're there both days we'll just ride our bikes over to the front entrance parking lot in the morning to meet up with you.

Sun. evening we loaded up the bikes; early Monday moring I still had a sore throat, but decided to go anyway (don't want to spend another day running errands); how often does one get to ride after fresh rain/snow in SoCa?

Jr. had the day off from school, so he & I got to the main entrance @ 8am. It was cccccold, & looked like it had rained lightly the prev. day & all night; a blanket of snow was left from 5k' up on Frazier Mtn. (which is 8k' high). We figured the forest trails would be closed, so did the normal DRN/Lastplace big loop in the lesser-traveled trails of the park instead.

The soil was perfect - not slick, wet a few inches deep (no dust), so traction was unbelievable. The water puddles were frozen, but got broken up by our tires.

We did a few excusions just to get ideas for future group DRN rides; came up with some good ones (heh, heh heh )

There was water coming down Maxy Creek, but it could only be found further up. Got some camera footage there of Jr splahing thru the rocks/stream bed & ducking under the oak branches.

On our last leg back we passed by the Tejon (USNF) Trail head. The gate was open! And snow on both sides of the trail! So we jetted back to the pickup (main entrance) for a sandwich & topped off w/fuel.

Tejon Trail had so much snow there were 100' sections where no soil could be seen; traction was good but it was getting a little leery as we followed two other tracks all the way to the end; the only way to know you were on the trail was sight of two fresh prev. tracks, general vegetation clearing, & experience; add to that snow was falling upon us at times, sometimes it was coming down rather dense. Neither of us wanted to spend the night there.

The passing of the lead rider would cause captured snow to fall off of the tree branches/bushes onto the following rider & onto the leader. I remember 3rd gear tops; most was 2nd - any faster you'd get into trouble. It wasn't that slick but 4" deep or more in most areas would result in a rut you were best off to stay in - going out could cause a front-end washout or squirrely rear. It was absolutely pristeen. Coming upon the "wye" where Tejon ends & Gold Hill Trail splits off to the left, it looked like a winter wonderland.

Midway down Gold Hill the snow subsided. What a relief to make it to the pavement, esp. since the ranger just went by, tho we were legal. My cheeks were so sore I had to transfer often from one to the other to make it thus far.

We buzzed back to the main entrance, mostly in 4th & 5th down the road & thru the fast washes in the valley floor. We put in an exhaustive 56.8 miles of singletrack under some unusual conditions.

And I think my cold has turned for the worst, but it was well worth it.

s-s-ssnnnooow?!!! :scream: c-c-ccool?! ummm, errrr, anyone know what the forcast for this weekend will be?

Okay, maybe it won't be tooo bad, http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USCA0432?GO=GO
It's 26 ("feels like 18") degrees up there now!!! :scream:

Anybody know where to get one of those face thingies (that's the technical term for I don't know what it's called) to keep your face warm?

Posted by: Farmer John---------------------

gsr,
try a ski store for the face mask. I have a neoprene one that works great. (just don't wear it into a bank or 7-11)

placelast,
Have you looked into the trail that we went up with Kiwi where I thought there was more trail further up?
I am interested in riding at Gorman again, but will not be able to until approx mid march and that is only if I do not move to Wisconsin...

Posted by: placelast---------------------

GSR: as much as I hate to recommend them (Krap-Pa-(r)all), the best skull warmer I bought was from them, & it's call a balaclava - look on their web site. Their part no. is 309-0940 - $8.99, & made from nylon. It's all I need to keep my brains from freezing. I did not use it, but rather a chin/neck warmer & enduro jacket over regular gear.

Yes, it was under 30 deg. when we were there - the steam from breathing went out ~2' or so. Bbbbuuuurrrr. It's like being @ a ski resort, but warms up quickly once you get on two wheels & the sun gets higher. Tejon Trail faces south & is in the sun most of the day, so that helps.

I don't think you'd need it in the slower stuff as stuggling to keep the bike straight on singletrack keeps things rather warm, but it's needed in the faster sections.

A few years ago my wife & I stayed at the Flying-J truckstop in Lebec; the hotel is call the Good Nite Inn. Rooms were clean and relativly inexpensive.

(Yo!) Farmer: yes, this was the (trail?!) stream. I couldn't talk my son into riding up past the part where you two disappeared from the group - although he's tall, his bike outweighs him 2-to-1, so he has little confidence in the moss-covered wet rocks.

It looked as if some others hoofed it further up. Perhaps we can try it again sometime. :think Or have Kiwi & Co. tell us about it.

Great - it seems to be coming together a bit.

PlaceLast ?
PlaceLast Jr. ?

9 am on Sunday at the front lot sounds great. If I get alot done on Friday I'll show Saturday too ... might as well.

PlaceLast - I'm gonna hold off on the big bore for now - the Mahle piston is $225 to replace. I'm sure it will last a long time but I'm more worried about rod, etc. I think I'm gonna stop throwing money at this bike for now. Probably buy a new bike later this year or early next. That's the plan. The new Husky 4-strokes are green so I may wait and see how they pan out and then get one. Or keep the little green Husky and get a red-sticker 2-stroke for racing and non-green areas / seasons.

So John - are you guys gonna come out this weekend ?

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

dirtjunkie and his son Shawn may join us too. You remember Chris from Big Bear right Eric?

Of course !

Eel,

I am a maybe. If I can work things out I`ll be there. Placelasts report sounds to good to turn down. Forest trails are open. I would want to leave around 3 so I can watch the second half of the superbowl.
Hope to see ya sunday

Posted by: scar tissue---------------------

Man another missed ride.

I gotta go to our sales conference in Palm Springs. 3 days of golf. Besides my bikes still not ready from the shop. :think

I don't see how he can resist. We work in the same office he's had to listen to me talk about it, The brochures on his desk, he'll probrably go with me pick it up, and he'll be behind me as usual every ride looking at it.

Plus, I'm trying to get our boss to buy him one, instead of an additional bonus this year.

Resistance is futile, young Thumbsy boy.

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

I'm out ... unless my order miraculously arrives today.

A genius at Fast by Ferracci said he would ship my new piston 3-day. He send it ground instead.

Posted by: placelast---------------------

Same here - couldn't make it.

Eel & others: how about next Monday the 11th, and/or the 18th?

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Well you guys missed out BIG time! Beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky, temps were perfect, snow on the ground in the mountains, challenging trail, hillclimbing, and just some messing around riding. We had a blast. I think TTRGuy said he would be posting a ride report later.
Sorry you guys couldn't make it.

How about El Mirage this weekend. I am just about finished with this flu and I need to ride. Almost 2 months with no real seat time

Posted by: the Eel---------------------

I have work on the 11th so that's out for me.

Aren't you gonna do the Sweetheart on the 17th at El Mirage ? I'm going to.
