Front Brake Response-KDX

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Can anyone tell me if the front brake on the KDX can be made to be a little less responsive. It seems to be a little to aggresive for a friend of mine not able to get on these forums. I noticed while riding my bike a mile down the street to the car with no lights, or site of a PD, to the car wash, that the front brake is very repsonsive indeed, would that be a design feature to get the bike to stop, or can it be made to have to squeeze further to obtain the same effect.
I appreciate all your repsonses very much.

Thanks!

No it's not a KDX design feature unless this particular KDX was manufactured by someone who likes to see nose wheelies. I've seen this problem a lot in the past. The reason is usually that the pads are contaminated with oil or some kind of bike cleaner. The cheepest fix is to take the front pads off and give them a good spray with brake cleaner and then sand them on a flat surface with 150 grit paper. DANGER- SOME PADS CONTAIN ASBESTOS AND YOU SHOULD NOT BREATH THE DUST!!!!! Use a bit of silicone grease under the slider boots (not the piston seals or piston dust boots). Also make sure the pins aren't grooved. If you haven't done so for a while , now is a good time to change the fluid with something that has a higher boiling point. The higher the #, the higher the boiling point.DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1(not 5.0 which is silicone based) are all compatable but it's not a good idea to mix them. After all that, your brakes should be as smooth as butter. IF YOU DON'T FEEL UP TO IT OR YOU'RE NOT QUITE SURE WHAT YOU"RE DOING, TAKE IT TO YOUR LOCAL SHOP.DEALER OR MECHANIC who would be more than happy to relieve you of some cash. Good Luck.
