Hey guys,
on an average, how many engine hours do most of you do before slipping in new piston and rings?

Posted by: kevinkdx---------------------

I would say a new set of rings twice a year and a piston every year. Just to be on the safe side, as i just got $1017.45 worth of engine work done. Just do it at least once a year cuz its only liek a $100 so no big deal.

I still have my stock piston (4 seasons riding) in my bike and it is perfectly fine.
I just put new rings in this winter to get a bit more compression. I think new rings twice a season is a bit overkill, unless you are racing MX or something.

Well i say this cuz i ride everyday, I mean everyday and i ride hard trying to beat my dads xr 600!

what i mean is,do any of you guy's keep a log book to give you an idea of how many hours you have done on the bike for trans oil/lube/top end work,or do most of you take a bit of a guess at it?

I keep a loose record. 104 hours since my top end last winter. Bike still runs strong. I'll probably do another top end sometime this winter, once the deep snow hits and I can't ride.

220 pistons will eventually explode on you, the skirts crack and fall off. 4 seasons!!! :scream: I'd be putting a weisco in it before your building a new bottom end, replating your cylinder, replacing your cylinder or owing your life savings to Eric Gorr.

In answer to the original question I keep track by mileage in a log. Last season I logged 1200 trail miles, all woods single laner etc. and my top end was still good. I think if you do log mileage you should easily get between 1500 and 2000 miles on a top end if you are trail riding. If you are really hosin' it then maybe less than that but I rod ethe snot out of mine quite often (holdover from my 125cc riding days) and I had no trouble. I changed it because of the 220 piston failure symptom.

thanks for the comments,i guess the most accurate way would be to tear it down once a year(maybe earlier if you are doing big/hard hours on it)and measure up the piston, ring end gap,etc and do what need's doing!:think

Fred T, if I had the money to buy a new piston, I would.
Being the unemployed 16 year old I am, I dont exactly have that much coin.
And I dont know for a fact that it is the stock piston because the previous owner was not very specific about the maintenance done. I did however have my piston and cylinder looked at by a mechanic at a local shop and he said everything is perfectly fine, so I am content.
