Yamaha TT-R 125L VS. Honda XR 100R

I'm selling my sons CR 80. And want to put him on a four stroker. I like the TT-R 125L but want some oppions on the TT-R 125L and the XR 100R . How is the power on either bike smooth without a lot of bang, I hope? And just general problems. Also any other info that maybe of use.

I've owned each of these in the past and I'd choose the TTR125L over the XR100 any day of the week, except if you're tring to save a few bucks. They both have really smooth transmissions. The 125 has a little more power,especially if you put a BBR pipe on it. The stock TTR suspension is way better than the XR. Also, the TTR is a better balanced bike; good ergos. Just my opinion, though. You could have fun on either bike.

By the way... a CR80 will SMOKE both of the bikes you mentioned.

Neither of those bikes has half the suspension of a CR80, or half the horse power for that matter. And the XR suspension has NO adjustments at all. Unless the CR80 is just WAY too much for your son, he probably will not be happy with either. My son just went from an XR100 to a YZ85 and couldn't be happier. He was bottoming the suspension constantly on the XR.

Your right Okie, I don't ever look in this forum so it didn't cross my mind. OOps! HiG4s, I think that the CR is to much for him. He isn't realy into jumping or racing it. He likes just riding a round and going on loops in the woods. So I figure that a mellow little four stroker is the way to go.

I had a CR80 until I hit a kicker jump in 4th gear (didn't know it was a kicker) and broke my collar bone. Then my dad sold it and bought me the TTR 125L, before the CR I had a xr 80. My friend had a XR 100 and I had ridden it a few times before he sold it. I would go with the TTR. Its a nice little bike.

Definately go with the TTR over the XR. I've ridden both extensively back-to-back and the Yamaha is sooo much the better bike IMO. The suspension and front brake are better as are the ergos ('01 TTR vs. '00 XR). There's not a huge difference in motor performance except at the very top end and both motors are really linear (no big "bang" as you say). As for price, the Yamaha is more expensive up here (Canada, eh) but you'll get more for it when you sell it.
As for problems, none on the Yamaha (owned it for a year). The XR has a bit of trouble warming up, but the folks on the forums have advised on a larger pilot jet to fix it. Still have gotten around to fixing it

Spend the $$ and put a XR100 motor in the CR80 frame...... check out BBR for more info

Or find a 6-speed XL-125 and kick butt on both the XR and TTR.

We own 3 of these bikes, a stock TTR125L, a tricked out TTR125 and an XR with minor mods. They are all fun, the TTRs are "better bikes" from the handling and power end, but the XR 100 is so much lighter and has such good bottom end it is still a very fun bike.
My son just started riding a heavily modified 2002 KX100. That bike weighs less than any of the others and has more HP than all 3 combined. The TTRs and XRs are play bikes NOT racers with any significant "bang".
It all depends on what you are looking for.

Just bought a used 2001 TTRL 125 for my son could have bought a new XR for the same $$ thought the TTRL was a better bike,front disc brake,bigger shocks,the easy to get at air filter,more ponys,and the seat height is alittle more.My son is 10 and I hope he gets 2years maybe 3 on this bike?

Well as much as I wanted to get my son the TT-R. I ended up buying a 01 XR100. The people were pretty much giving it away, imop. So I had to get it. We will have to see how he does with it. Maybe in a few years they will have a YZ 150f out on the market. And he can move up to a nicer bike then.
