Reno/moon rocks report

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: chuck_h---------------------

Just returned from riding at Moon Rocks and met some of you people who gave me the directions to find you - (Blame them).
Went for a loop with a group of about 15 to 20 of the early arrivals. Earlier in the day crossed paths with several others.
Ride Report ----
Recent rains have dropped the dust level down considerably and added some beneficial moisture for traction. Snow melted last week and area is about as good as it will get.
Chilly today - 'cept when the sun came out - then it was almost perfect. Great Day for riding and looks like the folks will be having a good time. If the number of wheelies I saw upon leaving the staging area is any indication of "fun" then LOTS of folks were having fun. As my friend and I left - several riders were doing some hill climbing and ripping down some dirt roads. Single track sections were grand - though a few folks were dragging after there first few miles in the whoops. This area is Whoop City, so better work out on the rowing machine prior to riding at Moon Rocks. Actually - some guy was out in a Hummer all week, knocking down the big bumps on the roads, so the conditions out there are pretty close to perfect. Chance of light showers today, tomorrow and Sunday - which will knock the remaining dust down a tad.
Hope to meet more of you all on Saturday.

Hey, this is my first post. Man this is a big Forum. I'm going to Moon Rocks tomorrow. That's a local riding area for me. I live only 20 miles from there. Too bad the weather isn't a little better though. :silly:

Oh My Gosh! What an awesome trip. So much to say, gonna be hard to get it all in right. Am I really the first one to light it up?

But first and foremost... I am NOT a CHICK! Anyone who ever wondered, I scratch & shift like the rest of you. I swing the right way, I buy my underwear in packs of three, I know what a ground-rule double is, I burp, I fart, I have a goatee. Actually, it was kinda funny when people asked who I was & I paused, weighed the pros & cons of actually saying who I was & finally blurted out "Zio". So, let's recap- I got sticks & berries, I use 'em the right way.

Second- FarmerJohn rocks. Thanks again for letting me borrow the CR250. Get used to it, I'll be wearing out that phrase for a while. It really meant a lot to me. One day I hope to do the same for someone else. BTW- for anyone wondering it ain't no stock '97 CR250. Trust me, it's one of the sweetest bikes I've ridden. I don't go too fast, I'm not very smooth, but that bike sure helped me step it up a notch when the time came. Light years ahead of my last CR. Sure you don't wanna sell it?

The riding was awesome. Al Rocher couldn't have predicted better riding conditions. It rained for us Friday night, then snowed Saturday night. Strick wasn't kidding- it doesn't get any better than that. Moonrocks has a little of everything for everyone, IMO. I didn't hear anyone complaining once. Tight single track (so I was told), fire roads, miles and miles of whoops (ouch!), hillclimbs, little moto-tracks, easy, hard, intermediate, stuffed animals, you name it.

Strick- thanks for taking me on the loop one-on-one. I needed it, I hadn't yet really felt comfortable with riding or meeting any of the DRN'ers & it helped me break out.

Endoqwest- Kelly (guy with the GasGas) wants me to say thanks for him for letting him ride the 520. That's all we talked about on the way home, and he felt bad he didn't remember to say thanks before we left. And you & everyone else were right- he's 520 bound. BTW- why do they call you Dopey?

CPTJack- the downhill get off I had right in front of you, where I was going balls-out you've never seen anyone go that fast- in case you forgot I just wanted you to remember thats how it happened.

GSR- Smokey Bear says only you can prevent eyebrow fires :o

Kiwi- I was relieved to hear your accent. But I was expecting a big furry beard. Otherwise, you're the only one who pretty much met my expectations. And though I wasn't even close to making it into the top half of the talent pool, I'm pretty sure I was faster than you all weekend!

I'm glad to have finally met some of you. It was getting old, just doing the internet thing. Now I have some real-life faces & experiences. BigLou, I'll meet you soon. Aimee says you're a kook, but I wanna see for myself. Oh, and Thumbs doesn't look Italian.... He is short, tho

Great ride, everyone. Pics will be up soon!

Were you 2 guys at someplace other than where I was?? Conditions, try absolutely perfect!!!. I can't wait to read the concensus on conditions from the visitors.

Posted by: chuck_h---------------------

I said "almost" perfect only because it was a little chilly. Thought Saturday was even better. Tried to post an update on Saturday but something happened and it didn't go through. The little rain on Friday night made the dirt PERFECT. Practically zero dust and when the sun was out - it WAS perfect.
Didn't go out there Sunday - as it wasn't so pretty, then.
Great event - looks like everyone had a blast.
The pora-potties were a nice touch, too.

Posted by: FireLily---------------------

Wow, I'm back home now and still excited from the Moon Rocks ride up in Reno!

Moon Rocks was awesome. The condition was perfect, especially on Sunday. Since we were the first riders who got there on Sunday morning, we had a chance to ride on the SNOW! Too bad my fingers got so cold (I didn't have cold weather gloves yet) that I had to stop riding after half an hour. But then when other people started arriving, the sun came out and it got warm.

The dinners with all the riders (how many?) were great. I loved the steak and the service at Outback. Whoever chose that restaurant (Ellen?), good choice!

Thank you all for having me and riding with me. I had such a great time in last three days. That was a great American adventure for me. I learned a lot in those group rides. And the great thing is that I feel that my riding skills have improved over the weekend.

Strick and Mimi, thank you for all the work you have done for us.

Hope to meet you next time,

We came over the hill from Sacramento and the conditions could not have been better! Sunday was incredible with fresh wet dirt and some trails covered in snow.

Thanks to the locals Vince, Steve and Miles for showing us the trails and providing storage for the bikes. The hospitality was incredible and much appreciated.

We will be back in March before the weather heats up and will try to repay the hospitality.

Hey guys;

I rode up to Moon Rocks from my house on my XR650 Saturday. The off-roading up and back is really fun from where I live in Spanish Springs (20 dirt miles to Moon Rocks). I'm fairly new to the Reno area and coming from coastal California, I feel like I've moved to dirt bikers paradise. I didn't have an off-road bike for several years when I moved here. I took one look around and just had to get one. I ride around the Moon Rocks area a lot especially in the colder months when everything else is snowed out. The ride up to Moon Rocks from my house is one of the first ones I did when I got my bike. I usually see only a few bikers out there. It was amuzing to see that huge crowd. I didn't get a chance to meet anyone though...maybe next time.

The conditions were good and the damp dirt was really nice, but the weather gets a lot nicer even this time of year. Personally, I like it better in early spring when it's warmer and still damp enough to keep the dust down. After looking at the pics, I see that some of you were braving the snow on top of Dogskin. I have to admit, you are better men that me! Went out shopping for furniture Sunday and it was raining/snowing pretty good. I was thinking about you guys out there in that weather.

I hooked up with the Dust Devils Motorcycle Club shortly after I moved to Reno. They do an annual 2 day dual sport ride in the area. This year, part of the course runs over Dogskin Mountain (the big one just West of the Moon Rocks where everyone was parked). It also has an "easy way" split for less advanced riders that runs along the base of the mountain. I'll post a notice here regarding the ride for anyone that may be interested once planning is complete and the website fully updated. The website is http://www.dustdevilsmc.com, but not all of the info has been posted yet.

Well, glad to have seen the event and look forward to attending the next one.

- Craig

Strick, you knocked another one right out of the park! Awesome organization, awesome riding, awesome conditions, awesome company! I've got some pics to post if there is a common area for posting them.

Buddy and Mini, thanks again so much for helping us out with transportation!!

MCD and son, I've got some action shots of you guys defying gravity. Send me your email address and I'll forward them on.

I really hope this continues to be an annual event! That was without doubt the best riding I've ever done in February!

The Reno ride keeps getting better every year! Started off Friday riding singletrack / sidehill stuff to the top of ridge in photo, with Ricky1 and MrWr. Saturday rode similar stuff with big group, then on accidental tour with Thumbs,CptJack,Zio. Sunday after rain and snow left perfect conditions, went on most awesome ride to the southwest corner with AngryJim and Kelly. Found lots of new(to me) washs, singletrack, and hills. Had fun riding with the girls also, GSR, Kali and others. Best Feb. riding I have found. Looking forward to more Nev. rides. Where was the stinky pig?

Posted by: NVR FNSH---------------------

All I can say is - "THANKS". Stick, Mimi, Bobby, Ricky1, Team Home Depot et al - you guys are awesome (let me guess who this smilie is named after....) Strick whatever connection you have with the dirt bike weather gods don't let it lapse - whatever you did worked.

Hope to see most of you at Downieville sometime in the spring

Brian

Posted by: Strick---------------------

Brian, I am really going to make more of the CA rides this year. The one I did last year at Elkins Flat was a lot of fun.

Yes, the weather connection worked well this year.

I REALLY want to say a BIG THANK YOU to Ricky1, McD, and his son Jordan, for all their help with course marking as well as tour guides. I also want to thank RAZ (Barry) for his help leading the advance group on Saturday you guys ROCK!!!

Strick

Glad it was another great event, not surprising knowing the location and the hosts! Wish we could have made it :whiner: We will next year!!!

Did anyone kiss Karl's rock for him?

Not that I saw..... a couple of close calls though

The photo of a KTM standing up in the sky is great!

Posted by: Dirty Dave---------------------

The moon rocks ride was once again the most fun a person can have with ones clothes on. Friday night dinner was greatfood and great company. Saturday was great riding. We (dirty dave, brian and jimmy) got seperated from the intermediate group and ended up trying to cross a small:silly:snow field. We spent the next two hours pushing the bikes through 18"-24"of snow back to the 'dry side'. When we finally got back to the van our day was done.
Sunday started well, at least the first mile or so... For all who rushed to pick up the husky and me out of the dirt...Thanks! I still have no idea what caused the crash but by the way my body feels right now, I know it was worthy of ESPN sports bloopers.
Thanks again to Strick,Mimi and all the Reno crowd for another outstanding event. As usual the camera stayed safely in the van for the whole trip so I can't add to the visuals. But...(in my best 'arnold' voice) "We'll Be Back!"

Posted by: trlrdr---------------------

What can I say? Wow! That was awesome. A big thanks to all the locals for arranging everything and it was great meeting all the people I did. You guys rock!

We came up from the North Bay area in California on Friday and due to not being able to get our act together and a trailer tire that almost let go at the wrong time, we didn't arrive until it was too late to ride that day. We hooked up with a large group at a Mexican restaurant that night and met a few people and then turned in.

Saturday the weather was awesome and the traction couldn't have been better. I was totally stoked and I went on the int. ride that took us to just at the snow line. I had a great time on that ride and Brian even put on a show for us at the end

After the loop we played on the little hill next to the staging area doing drag races and seeing who could get Jill's bike to catch the most air off the little jump halfway up.

Sunday was a bit on the cool side, especially when we hit the snow trail and sliiiddd our way down. At one point I was trying to keep some distance from the guy on the KTM in front of me (I think it was Strick) and I almost plowed into him because once I picked up speed I found I couldn't stop It was a close call but I missed him...

It was difficult to leave the area on Sunday but we wanted to get back over the hill before it snowed so we took off just as the sun started to come out and I could tell that there was still a few more hours of excellent riding left

Dude, I was impressed by the "impact" zone. I could tell right away that that was a "good" one...

Another great ride in Reno!! And once again Strick pulls off a wonderfully coordinated effort. Many thanks to you and Mimi for the use of your garage, the wherehouse storage and port-a-potty arrangements, providing maps, getting us an excellent discount at your local shop, making diner reservations and leading several treks around the desert. And a special thanks for the help with my bike.

Kiwi, Thumbs, TTRGuy and I arrived Thursday around 1:00pm and left Monday morning. I can’t believe after 3 days of riding I was still ready for more. I could have easily stayed another day.

It was a bit chilly in the mornings but the riding conditions were excellent and it didn’t take long before an enduro jacket wasn’t necessary.

Friday’s ride consisted of a group, led by Strick, around the beginners loop to check it out and then a trip around the intermediate loop, which was a lot of fun but man, can those whoops take it out of you! Later we set off on another Stick guided tour that led us up a whooped out sand wash that was pretty fun despite more whoops than me or my knees cared for. Eventually our group got separated but we all made it back unscathed.

Saturday, Brianc took a few of us around a loop that he, Pegasus and Marshall had found and marked off the evening before. Great little loop with some fun hills and minimal whoop sections! I rode this loop at least twice and once backwards.
Spent some time playing on the hill climbs next to the staging area as well. Last year, when I was on my RM125, you couldn’t have paid me to go up those hills, I was too chicken to try, this year I had a blast. TTRGuy (on my bike) and Thumbs somehow got it into their heads that a drag race was in order up the whooped out hill climb in the center and the next thing you know pairs of people were lined up to do the same. It made for some great entertainment and I think I got some good shots of some of the action. I’ll post them as soon as I can.

Sunday, zio and I bailed part way into another intermediate loop shortly after Dirty Dave’s get off. I put together a fire that even TTRGuy could have been proud of (never mind how it got started!) and warmed up a bit before hitting the trails with Kali and Fremontguy. We just sort of winged it and zigzagged across the desert trying out different trails. I think that ride was by far the best ride I went on the whole weekend. There’s nothing like blazing across the desert just going wherever your heart desires.

Thanks Pegasus and CJ for letting me take your bikes for a spin. It was a pleasure riding with you both, even though between the two of you and The Ant, I feel like the damn jolly green giant!

I really enjoyed meeting some new DRN members as well as seeing some familiar faces. Hopefully some of you will make it out to Dirtweek this year.

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Let’s see, I forgot to add a little bit of GSR’s insight into some of our fellow DRN’rs:

I think someone needs to check FireLily for a set of cajones considering the way the girl flies downhill! Mini, did you ever get a chance to try out a KTM200? I think you could be lethal with one of those in your hands.

I’m pretty sure Mxbetsy shouldn’t be allowed out of his wife’s sight not to mention he doesn’t have proper port-a-potty etiquette. It’s quite possible the man is not aware he’s not in college anymore, especially if he’s paired up with Desert_Racer, then you’re just ASKING for trouble!

Zio wins the award for being the polar opposite of his online persona. I think he’s actually shy!

Don’t fall for Endoqwest’s (Dopey) quite demeanor or innocent face. If the stories are true, this man is trouble, multiplied x2 with his sidekick Bonehead.

Pegasus just plain rocks. Not only is she sweet and generous, but that woman shreds on her little BBR.

Strick has no respect for animals of the swine persuasion, but sure knows a thing or two about jetting.

Thumbs, aka rooster/rockchucker, despite having a minor case of OCD, is an all around nice guy and great travel companion, although he needs to work on acting when I pick out the hot chicks for him. Sheesh, what do I have to do, get their phone #’s for you? If that’s the case then I’m not sharing, cuz…. of course you know ALL women are bi-sexual.

380excman & Roger certainly are a pair that definitely get the most bang for their buck at a hotel casino buffet! You can do nothing but laugh when these two are around. I still chuckle when I think of “We’re 300lbs, we don’t need layers!!”

Dirtygirly’s boyfriend should get a huge A for effort and an award for being the most stylish. He bought a bike that Thursday, had never ridden before, yet there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t try. When not following along on the loops, he could be found making attempts at the hill climbs, playing on the rocks or replacing clutch levers.

E-ticket appears to have an unhealthy obsession with beef and should seek help now.

What a great weekend of riding! Thanks to everyone who organized the riding for saturday. Those were some great loops.
Barry, the KDX god, led a group of around 20 riders on a nice 35 mile loop around Moonrocks saturday morning. A couple of guys ran low on fuel and had to head back early (380exc Man and another). The trails were perfect, and you could ride right with the guy in front of you. There was a lot of dicing within the group. Several multi-cc four strokes were represented in the advanced ride. There were several very good riders in the pack. I can't remember all the names, but some guys from Oregon were good riders, Endoquest and others on KTM520's. I think there was also a group from AZ. who were along for the ride. Apparently, there are only 3 men in the US not too embarassed to ride a 200, Barry(KDX 200), Mr. WR (GG 200), and me. We had to make do with our "girl" bikes in the wide open desert. I know that my brother was surprised to see me catch him on a wide open speed run, look over for acknowledgement, hit sixth and leave him behind. He's been roosting me for years, it was time for payback. Plus, he's 6'4" and I can't beat him up.
There were so many great trails. I loved the sand washes and rocky drop offs. We were swapping positions everywhere and learning to trust that we wouldn't take eachother out. Great time!
After lunch, I was elected to lead a group out for another ride. The group was a mix of riders from the morning ride and those looking for a more challenging ride. We had about 20 again, but a few got off coarse. I ended up leading us to the south to find some single track. Luckily, or unluckily , Barry was along on the ride. I asked him if he would lead us up to this rocky ridge overlooking Reno. Well, 50 miles later we rolled back into the staging area. What a trail! We saw alittle of everything. Rocks, small trees, rocks, guys with shotguns, an old dude in a pick-up who threw us off his land, rocks, a highway!?, gates, rocks and we were closer to the Casino's than to our trucks. One poor guy ran out of gas about 5 miles from camp. We got him going again and made it back before dark. Sadly, I was 15 miles away from my 100 mile goal. I looked for some takers for a last minute 15 mile sprint, but everyone ignored me.
Sunday was perfect again. A light snow fell over night. I got there early and did a short loop to check out my bike. I talked Fremont Guy and my friend Kelly to head for the radio towers. I love riding in the shallow snow, and I knew they would love the trails I had in mind. I won't even bother describing it. I could never do it justice. We did NOT want to stop riding. Each trail was as good as the next. We experienced perfect conditions on perfect trails. Fremont Guy and Kelly know what I'm talking about. Sadly I had to leave sunday afternoon. Kelly and I diced on the MX track for a while and then I packed it in. I also got roosted in front of everyone as payback for an earlier incident with Kelly. Keep your eyes open dude !
It was great to see everyone out there. See you next year.

Best Trail: The one with the.... all of them.
Best pile up: That muddy uphill that collected about 6 of us.
Best Looking Bike: The guy from SoCal with the 300KTM with really cool graphics.
Best Mileage: Scott's CR500, 50 miles on 2 gallon tank, still going.
Best line: This is better than sex.

I earned a lot of respect for some people out there. Barry, Bobby, Mr. WR, MXBundy, and everyone else I got to ride with, it's all about the riding! Thumbs, GSR, TTR Guy, thanks for sharing a dinner table with me friday night. Strick and Mimi for everything!!

We're all lucky that TNT was not able to ride, cause he would've schooled us all! You rule dude.

Well the 13 hour drive down to Reno was definately worth it! Riding Moonrocks was a blast, just wish I didn't have to come back and go to school. Much more fun to ride in the desert than sit in class.

Strick and Mimi thank you so much for letting us store our bikes at your place...and for the directions to get there..even though Ian and I somehow still managed to get lost on the way there.

Ian made me memorize the map to the hospital, I'm glad I didn't have to use it. Yes I like him, and no I'm not trying to kill him by getting him on a motorcycle. He had a great time, I think he's hooked on dirtbiking now.

CJ- thanks for letting me ride your pampera, its really sweet! Thanks for the help with my flat tire too.

GSR and Kiwi, thanks for the clutch lever and instalation tips for Ian.

Firecracker has her truck back now, complete with motorcycle and riding gear....and is still bummed she couldn't be there, but was in spirit.

My new truck came in today!...if only it was here 4 days earlier.

So when is the snow going to melt here in Spokane???! I want to go riding again!

Posted by: desert_racer---------------------

All I can say is WOW....

First thanks to Strick, Mimi & the Reno crew for your hospitality. Reno Rocks... literally... not that I would know as I was voted one of the biggest whimps in DRN (by people from my own SoCal crew no less) due to wanting to get to bed by 10 on Sat. night.
Heck I just wanted to be able to stay on my bike on Sunday..

What can I say. It was worth the 12 hour drive from SoCal to meet and ride with an awesome bunch of DRN's. It didn't matter what level of rider you were there was something there for you and someone to ride with.

Saturday was great ... Did the intermediate ride in the morning led by one of the local hotshot's. We lost track of the ribbon that Strick had put out so he took us on a locals loop instead. It was awesome.. Did some sweet up and downhills and then this section of uphill singletrack along the edge of one of the mountains that led us to a sweet ridgeline that overlooked the valley. I was lucky enough to be one of the first to the top and got to see 3 or 4 dear that were up there grazing.

Saturday afternoon I went on the rock ride that angryjim refered to. It was 45 to 50 miles of pure fun. Talk about some boys that can ride. Have to thank Barry for gettin us home. That boy can flat out fly on that KDX.

Sunday morning we did a short 30 miler led by Strick. It was very cool with more whoops, climbs, singletrack, downhills, crosscounty, flat out fire roads, not to mention a mile or so of singletrack downhill in a foot of snow.. that was a new and exciting experience being from SoCal..

I've never been to a place with such a variety of riding in one area...

Thanks to Kiwi for letting me ride that beast know as the AF500, thanks to Endoquest for letting me ride the 520 (I gotta get me one of those) and thanks to Strick for letting me ride the 400.

Once again it was great to meet and ride with all of the great folks from all over that attended.. can't wait until the next big DRN gathering..

HUGE THANKS to Strick and Mimi and all the local folks who marked trails and led rides! This ride ROCKED!!!

I've been thinking all day about how to put this weekend's ride report into words. The thing is, I just don't know how to relay how much fun I had riding on such great terrain with such WONDERFUL folks! Maybe I'll just relay some random thoughts.

Favorite loop: I think it's known as the "alternate intermediate loop." It's the one that starts with whoops, turns uphill into a steep side-slip with rocky sections, and ends in a big downhill. Rode it first with Pegasus, The Ant, E-Ticket, and a bunch of folks. Didn't make a clean run of the downhill so Pegasus led a second trip out the next day with the same folks plus Dave, Mini, and Brianc. STILL didn't make a clean run of the downhill even with Dave's coaching (thanks!), but had a BLAST with all the folks! Also discovered that E-Ticket is actually McGuiver in disguise when it comes to fixing bikes with duct tape!

Favorite riding companions: EVERYBODY! I have to admit, though, that it was incredibly comforable to ride with the other women! There were so many of us this year that we could almost be considered as a "pack!"

Favorite bike swaps: 'Got to try some cool bikes! Those BBR Specials have some GREAT low end for the trails (thanks Pegasus and The Ant). The KTM200 had some sic power for sure (thanks Scourge of the Internet). The YZ80 was quite a nice size (thanks Mimi). However, I had a slight revelation whenever DirtyGirl swapped with me for a bit. That KX100 felt reeeaaaaally gooood in the whoops (thanks DirtyGirl)!

Coolest thing about riding in the desert: The feeling you get whenever your back tire swerves out as you put on the throttle going around the corner in deep sand. Ooooo.

The coolest thing about the Reno Spodefest: Meeting and riding with all of ya'll!!!

Posted by: KiwiBird---------------------

Man, I've got such twisted emotions about Reno - on one hand it was great hanging out and BSing with everyone and on the other it sucked to not ride. I saw the Dr. today and only 6 more weeks, at least I got rid of the PITA sling!

Strick, Mimi, other organizers - it's already been said but, you guys rock!

I Know who that # 768 belongs to. What a pretty bike.

What a cool ride. The weather was perfect. Me and Bluethumper got there thursday and rode thursday afternoon for a couple hours. Ricky1 was the only other rider out there. The riding was good. On friday morning we met GSR, TTRguy and thumbs for breakfast at the Peppermill buffet. Breakfast was awsome (even with the special effects). Fridays ride was pretty good with Strick leading a few loops. But Saturday was riding Heaven. For the people who were there and do not ride in the desert much it does not get any better than it was, it was awsome.... Wet desert = traction.... The first loop I went out on was with the "advanced" riders. The group was awsome and Bobby set a blazing pace right from the get go. There were 2 distinct types of riders in that group. Advanced "racers" and advanced "trail riders". I had planned on riding with the intermediate riders on a short loop and at the last second I switched to the advanced group. About 1/2 way into the ride I was low on gas (left with 1/2 a tank) Anyway I only got about 20 miles in on the 35 mile loop. But all in all it was a blast.. Watching and participating in the drag races up the whooped out hill was fun also. There was no shortage of talent this year. It was great seeing everyone again from last year and meeting a bunch of new people. Next year will be better. I see this thing getting huge. Strick - Thanks for all. You are a class act and all round great guy. Thanks to Ricky1, Bobby and Barry. And thanks to everyone that made it this year. Im already thinking about next year.

And for the record there were only a few whoops.... I can see that if you ride in the woods alot that you thought it was whooped out. But for us desert guys it is an awsome riding area with few whoops......

Wow what fun..................

Posted by: MrLuckey---------------------

Well where do I start? First I'd like to thank Strick, Mimi, Bobby and all the other locals for all the work, hospitality and FIRST CLASS WEATHER/RIDING CONDITIONS! Absolutely perfect. I would also like to apologize to the Mexican restaraunt, Godfathers and The Outback Especially Godfathers hehehe. After riding 3 days, there were too many loops to detail but I am very surprised that the long snowy downhill hasn't been talked about more, I know that out of around 18 riders it had to have caused at LEAST 10 getoffs with a few DRN'rs choosing to display their style more than once. And the sand washes that followed were absolutey the bomb. Thumbs - I had way too much fun drag racing you up the whooped up hill and traveling with you, Rex - I meant to line up with you a couple more times since I missed a shift on GSR's bike I am sure you would have still won but I think it would have been close. Several of you were supposed to remind me to go back to the steep sandy downhill to try and climb it but I guess we all forgot in the midst of all the fun we were having. MxBetsy - I have said it before and I'll say it again.....Damn you can ride boy! The only DRN'r that I would even think about betting on against BusterWho. (In the woods, and I would ONLY think about it, but still). GSR continues to amaze me with her attack attitude and increase in skills in such a short time. She is supposed to be riding in Farmer Johns clubs family enduro in a couple of weeks but unfortunately I will miss it NVRFinish - Brian, you are the best man. Too bad we can't get together more. You will never know how much I appreciate another skilled rider who is willing to ride sweep. Great seeing you and visiting again. A big thanks to Endoquest for letting me ride the 520. It was great meeting you and bonehead and hanging out. You guys are awesome in every way. The idaho boys were there usual crackups and as fast as ever. ZIO, man you gotta save some of those one-liners for 'in person' instead of just the net I have to say that I was most impressed with all the female riders, the ones I knew before are all improving so fast and the new ones this year rocked. Thanks again Strick and everybody that I got to meet and ride with. My only regret is that I couldn't meet everyone and visit more. Awesome weekend. Anyone from SoCal notice the big green rolling hills with crevices/canyons on the way home Damn that looked like fun didn't it!

Would that be the west side of I-5 around Wesley? Nope, never noticed.

Okay, I finally got the pics loaded to my photo page. Not as many as last year. I was having too much fun to remember to take pictures!

Okie created a gallery for pictures from this ride so post any pics there if you can. I don't know how to compress my pictures so I didn't post mine there. :whiner:

The REAL question is 'Can you write your name in the snow peeing?'
That is what separates the men from the girls.

I can't remember who in the Mexican restaurant came up to Zio and said, I thought you were a chick, E-ticket?

Zio, I never thought you were a chick. And the way you shook my hand (KUNG FOO GRIP) after that guy said that, I knew you were actually a strong representative of the males species. My hand still hurts.

I did notice a twinkle in your eye when we stopped at the pig though

Hi everyone! Thanks a mil to Strick and Mimi. Great to meet some new friends. TTR, GSR, MXBundy, Desertracer and many others. Good ridin' and good partyin'. I'm STILL off-line (using a friends computer right now) and won't be up for another week. If I could, I would write one of my long ride reports but, alas, technology has thwarted me. Once I get back to cyberworld I'll hook up with a bunch of PMs and posts.
I had a GREAT time, the riding exceded my expectations and the conditions made for some excellent dicing. This project once again has proven that the off-road community is full of good will and kind hearted people, thank you.

I could use a little help trying to figure out what happened on sunday... I honostly have no recollection of the crash. I just remember cruising through the whoops and then someone asking if I was alright and helping me up. If this wasn't a family site I'd send pics of the bruises. I may have a bruised/cracked rib to boot... I've been riding a lot of years and never had a 'get-off' like that and not remember the cause... It rang my bell but good!
Through my glazed eyeballs it looked like a NASCAR pit with several people moving levers back into position, knocking dirt off me and the bike and holding me up 'till I got my bearings back... Thanks again to all!

Interpretation if we had been on a date: Zio, well, I thought you were cool on the phone, but in person... well... you're just not my type!

Gee, thanks. You can forget me ever coming to rummage through your tool bucket again. And your duct tape sucked! J/K- really, you just need a few beers in person, then I'll look better. I was really looking forward to beer at the pizza place, but we got hung up. Next year, I promise I'll break out of my shell.

Hey BrianC- it's my new screen name:

Thanks to everyone for making my wife and kids feel welcome and taking the time to help my wife try to learn to ride.

I just re-read through a few pages of the original thread. How funny, all the people I talked to online and didn't even meet. You guys gotta understand (I think GSR does)- I'm actually pretty shy in person. And my memory is atrocious. Seriously- I forget things faster than an Enron CEO on trial.

BrianC- did I meet you in Reno?

I just figured out that the dude on the kTm with the Skin graphics is desert_racer. Hey man, who was that you were with ont he kTm 200?

Fremontguy- Now I know who you are. The guy on the older kTm that was with me, Thumbs, CPTJack after losing the fast group?

Thumbs, sorry I didn't hang out with you more. That was funny, how in the old Reno thread you talked about being a slow Italian on the trails with me:silly: I grabbed a shot of you scooting up the hillclimb to help out the kid but it didn't turn out. That was pretty cool of you. Whose kid was that anyway?

Geeze, I shoulda said nope to dope.:whiner:

Posted by: KiwiBird---------------------

Zio - that was BrianC's kid Jeremy, he was hell on wheels getting up the middle line on the XR80 and the side line on the XR50. He was all smiles all day, bet he was a happy camper on the way home.

Posted by: The Tortoise---------------------

Zio,

That was probably my kid. Both had trouble with hill at parking area. I remember I was not the first to my son when he fell once. A nice person was helping my son out so it was probably my son.

Both my 6 year old son Trevor and 8 year old Tiger made it up the steeper section eventually.

By the way, I'm the one at the Fri dinner who said I thought you were a girl (Zio being your name) and on Sat you told me in private that you were a She Male, so now I know who and what you are. I am the bald tall guy with beard and all male parts. I ride a 300EXC KTM. I'm not prejudice so if you want you can borrow one of my bikes (my 300EXC or my wifes TTR250) and join me on some rides. We live in Lafayette (near Walnut Creek) and ride all over (dirt bikes that is). HA HA HA

For the record (I don't want to piss anyone off) Zio is a nice guy. He did say to me he is a She Male, but HE WAS JOKING, I believe. Now that he wrote his name while taking a leak we know that he is all male.

Send me your personal Email Zio and I will let you know when we ride and you can join us. Yes, you can borrow a bike, no problem.

That's a really cool offer, hopefully I won't have to take it up too often. Zia saw how thrilled I was when I got home, and I imagine I'll have me a new scoot in the garage soon enough. You can pm me any time. I don't give out my e-mail addy in public here, it'd reveal what I do for a living & then I'd be in for it.

long one... I'm taking up my own page....

Amanda and I left out of Redondo Beach at 3 AM Friday and arrived in Reno at 12 AM just in time for a well deserved nap. I was too tired for a pre-Renofest ride & good thing too b/c I was pretty sore by Sunday evening. Driving thru The Sacremento area was beautiful - really scenic with all the rolling wooded hills and open fields (Yeah I noticed that too!). I'll bet there's some fantastic riding there (if it's legal!).

The Mexican restraunt the first evening was great. A lot of fun and I got to meet a lot of great new people including, E-Ticket (Randy) and The Ant(Susan), Mr.WR (Rick), and TTRGuy (finally - the Eel says your desert cooking skills are legendary!). A few drinks later and all was right with the world! It was already worth the drive.

Got to sleep nice and early so Saturday morning was a cinch (not so for Sunday!) and conditions really were close to perfect. Strick greeted everyone & had 3 group planned: beginner, intermed., & advanced. I decided to go intermediate on the first day for a proper break-in. It can be said for certain that the Reno desert does not lack for Whoops! They were kicking my arse after the first 15 minutes! We were trekking along at a good clip & I lost it in one of the washes. I don't really know what happened but it was pretty soft landing. So after making my first "dirt angel" in Nevada I set the XR upright & begin the first of many kick-a-thon's. There must be a new *modified* drill to starting after dumping it since the installation of the pumper carb b/c it definitely doesn't work like before. Anyway after 100 or so kicks & a string of profanities it finally fires & off we go. Yee-haw! It was a pretty short loop so our fearlessleader led us back & took us out again for an ad-hoc jaunt into the hills. We got a bit of altitude climbing those desert hills - going through whoops & some quality singletrack and ending up w/ me out of breath. We stopped at 6700 ft (GPS) & took some group photos with the wide open valley floor below us. The trek ended with a big long sandy downhill (the last one of those I did in December ended with me bailing & hurting my ankle pretty good). The Ant and CJ on the Pampera were ahead of me & even though I was locked up on the brakes, I was closing rapidly. I knew I was going to smack into the rider in front of me if I didn't bail, so I decided I had to ditch lest things get real ugly & jumped clear. It turned out fine (nice & soft) so I let them get some distance, bumped it & rode it down,
watching the guy on the yammie in front of me bite it face first. So Zio, you weren't the only one .... oh yeah, he was haulin' ass too! Fun ride.

I arrived back at the truck to find sandwiches & adult beverages. ...and there was much rejoicing

Saturday's final loop wore me out. The guys in front were haulin & not looking back. After a long downhill I was trying to keep contact w/ the guys in front & the rider behind me but the guys in front had vanished & we couldn't tell which tracks were theirs. So after the obligitory looking around &
shrugging of shoulders the other rider & I stop to figure out what what to do now. Hey so you're Zio! I thought you were a chick! ...j/k. We decide to just explore (gotta love GPS) so we take off up this whooped out hill that never ends. The monkey-butt was killing me & we stop to rest. Sounds like a couple bikes coming our way & over the hill pops Thumbs & a couple other riders (FremontGuy?). Guess they got seperated too. We cruised back to camp at a good clip w/o incident ...'cept for soil sample Zio stopped to take!

Sunday was a bit sore. Stayed out too late as well, but what are gonna do? Strick took us out for loop which saw a lot of people bail b/f even a quarter way thru. Although my legs were toast, that loop was a blast - especially that fire road leading up the mountain. Endoquest goes off thru the snow like there's some kind of trail there & I'm thinking "What the heck? why not." Man I was P.O.'d by the time I got out of the snow. I made 3 snow angels and kicked that freakin' bike about 250 times. I believe Marshall documented the debacle well in photo's 42-50. I fell into a bush on the last one when I
couldn't get my foot down and got a stick in the butt and a hole tore in my (bike) seat. My butt is a deep shade of black & blue at the moment. Kinda like 'kaliedescope on pasty left cheek' (sorry for the visual).

Well it was a great time overall. Got to ride a lot of cool bikes. E-Tickets KTM400, Tee's 200EXC, a GasGas 300EC, Zio's (Farmer john's) CR250, and Darth Bundy's YZ250f. And someone actually wanted to ride mine! Thanks Randy! The Pumper carb rules. That CR250 scared me but all the others were great.

The biggest suprise was how immediately comfortable the 250f felt. Awesome bike. Here's a shocker - Amanda riding a dirt bike! She's never ridden before or expressed an interest. I figured she'd be in the casino's all day, but she actually got on a bike & rode! Wow, that was cool. Thanks to DougM's wife & everyone else for all their support.

Really, everyone was so cool it's almost kind of unbelievable. Special Thanks to Strick & Mimi. Also Randy & Susan, The Tortoise & family, BrianC & family, Buddy & Mini, Pegasus & Marshall, and everyone else. See ya next time!

Strick!! Great job on marking the trails and getting the porta-potty. This was my second Reno ride and I must say this weekend one was the best so far! The weather was perfect and traction was at its bestl. I arrived on Friday morning and was eager to get riding. I met up with Ricky1, Fremountguy and a few other, but can't seem to remember wh. Nerver the less we headed out for a warm up loop with Ricky1 leading the way! GREAT selection of trails and terrain for an immediate trail. After returning from the 1st loop to get some
lunch and top off the tank, AngryJim showed up. It did not take him long to get his KTM out of the truck and dawn his MSR gear and we were off for an adventure. I decided to take the lead for this little loop. I found a nice little hill to get the blood flowing. I started up and soon found out the sand was pretty soft and there was NO hope in making it to the top. I managed to make it about 1/4 of the way up before I stalled my little 200. Angryjim was about in the same position as me.....stuck! I fired the little GasGas back to life
and decided to traverse the hill from left to right with hopes of making it to the top. I did not look back to see where Angryjim was; I just kept on
plugging away little by little until I made it to the top. Once on the top I was waiting for Jim, but did not see him. So, I removed my helmet and yelled a few times for the KTM rider. Well, he was no where to be found. So I fired up my bike and headed back down to the hill to find AngryJim. About 1/2 way down I stopped and looked around, I noticed a solo rider riding across the valley, I figured that was AngryJim,so I took off to track him down. What a goose chase that was. I returned to the staging area to find Jim asking where I went??? I replied, "to the top of that hill". Friday night dinner was excellent, had a good time meeting everyone, even though I can't remember
who I meet....I think the Tecate's had something to do with that!
Saturday morning came way to quick. My GasGas was left in good hands with Strick. It was boarded next to his KTM in his trailer....I don't think anything rubbed off on my GasGas! If anything my little jewel inspired some trail manners into his 400SX. The staging area was a ZOO of bikes, trucks, and a box van, you name it, it was there! Strick had a quick riders meeting to inform everyone about the trial system and to break the group down into groups. Some how I managed to get tangled up with a bunch of heavy
hitters on big thumpers. AngryJim, Barry (FAST Local RenoTrail Guide) and myself were all on 200cc bikes! The pace was fast and the trails were some of the best I've ever ridden. I really don't remember much from that ride except for the waterfalls, the tight single track, WFO runs, casing my pipe and skid plate on some nasty rocks, looking at the damaged pipe and skid
plate from the rocks and the monkey butt Imanaged to make it back to the staging area all in one piece.....almost, I did manage to leave some bits and pieces of my Dunlop 752 out on the trail. With some much need rest and lunch it was time it muster up another group of riders.....we turned to Barry for another adventure... So we scrounged up a group of riders, none of which I can remember. I guess it was about 2:30 or so when we took off. In what direction???? I had NO idea. After crossing several ridges, valleys, and a few wrong turns we ended up in on some EXCELLENT single track! I remember AngryJim telling Barry we need to turn around and start heading
back to Moonrocks, or were going to end up back in Reno! By this time the sun was dropping and the shadows were getting long, not to mention the glare and what little dust was making it hard to ride. We had 1 rider take a nasty get-off on a section of trail that was littered with laval rocks. He was ok, but managed to put a tear in his LBZ riding pants. So, a this point we really needed to be getting back towards the staging area. We came across farmer in his pickup truck and his dog. From what I could tell the farmer
stopped Barry and they negotiated some kind of deal in order for the group to cross his land. I think Barry paid the guy off. Once we crossed through the barbed wire gate we were headed back in the general direction towards Moonrocks staging area. The young fellow on the Suzuki with the monster gas tank was running low on fuel. It was not too much father down the trail
that his tank was sucking air! AngryJim's brother (Tom) drained some fuel out of his KTM 300's tank for the thirsty RM 250.... Mr.LBZ was back in action.....for a few more miles. By this time we had about 30 minutes of sunlight left and the staging area was getting closer. Barry had disappeared and was no longer leading..... We stopped at an intersection on the trail. AngryJim and Tom decided to make one last blitz on some single track. Myself and the others WFO'ed back to the staging area. The LBZ rider was in
trace......he managed to make it back to the staging area with his RM 250 sucking air once again. I had an excellent time....once again! Thanks to all those who made the drive!!! Strick! Thanks for all your efforts!

Ohh, but the way, that steakhouse was EXCELLENT!!

DirtyDave....Sorry to hear about the ribs....I guys Les is off the hook now : Get well soon! Elkins Flat is coming up quick.....April!!

Too much fun and not enough words to describe. It was great to have the chance to meet some of you. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to meet everyone. The trip from Colorado Springs to Reno took 25 hrs(5 hrs to Breckenridge; usually about 2 hrs). The trip home took about 20 hrs(snow and slush ALL the way across Nevada(HWY 50). Strick, thanx for the outstanding hospitality. I'm sure glad you found those keys for the white truck Sunday morning Saturday's ride was just pure fun! When Strick was explaining the different loops at the rider's briefing he said "If there's any doubt at all if you are an expert, don't go on the Expert ride". That may not be verbatim, but it means the same. Anyhow, my dad(the Malcomb Smith lookin' character), Jim(his buddy) and I all looked at each other thinking the same thing; then my dad rather optimistically says, "well boys, I guess we'll find out if wer're experts today". After a couple enthusiastic *yep's* we were shortly on our way. I think Will(CSL) was already determined to attempt the expert loop, and he's in much better shape than I am. Come to find out, the only really challenging stuff was those damned whoops! Oh My God where they brutal!!! I guess if I HAD to ride them all the time I'd probably get good at'em, but that ain't the case. There was this one hill that had to been at least a mile long and ALLLLLL whoops near the beginning of the ride. That one killed me! Will passed me about 3/4 up as I was sitting on the seat trying to catch my breath and regain some energy in my arms. That hill really inserted a lot of real-estate between us in the back of the pack and the front runners. But, we were always there right behind em, playing catch up. ZMR, you took some really good pics of the ride. Except the one where you caught me picking up my DRZ out of a hole; my back is to the camera and my dad(purple pants) is trying to put his on the kick-stand to come help me! But that was the only time I dumped it all day.:o The single-track was absolutely awesome!! The ravines/creek beds w/ all the rocks and small ledges were great too! Give me all that stuff and leave the whoops out and I think I would have been much faster and less tired and sore. BTW- I didn't see very many other folks attempting to keep up w/ you guys through the whoops on 260lb. bikes!!!! Maybe I coulda kept up if I had a lighter bike......I don't know. In closing, what a great trip! We will definitely be back next year. Maybe my wife will be riding by then too.

Hehe! The Hard Charger would be my boyfriend, Ian. I think he is wearing his hockey goalie pads. Was his first time riding a motorcycle that weekend.

Posted by: angry jim---------------------

It's been a week since the ride, and I still can't stop thinking about it. I've ridden twice this week, once at my favorite local spot, and I still can't get over Moonrocks.
Mr WR, awesome report, as usual. Sorry you missed sunday.
Desert Racer, I liked the way that bike looked. Way to bring in your wife for fashion consulting. That loop saturday afternoon was great huh. We should get together for a ride sometime. I've always wanted to go to Jawbone Canyon, maybe we can meet there sometime and have a NoCal/SoCal shootout.
MXBundy, all I can say is daaaaaannnnggg! My friend, Kelly, was still talking about you yesterday. "There was this giant guy on a YZ250f who could rip!" Yes he can rip on that little diesel. You were a proud member of the 6'+ team. There were some big guys out there!
Fremont Guy, too bad we didn't have a helmet cam for sundays ride. Will you ever forget those trails? You did darn well for someone who hasn't been riding all that long. Kelly and I went to Clear Creek yesterday. That place is really much tougher than Moonrocks. They still had the Enduro course marked and it was a good one.
TTR Guy, I see you at every get together, but somehow we never get to ride together. Good luck in STL.
Dude on the DRZ400, good report. That saturday morning run was fun. Those things do need the Jenny Craig teatment. As far as the whoops are concerned, you have to get a rythm going. Don't grip the bars to hard and try to stay loose. I thought Colorado had whoops like that. Or were you from southern cal. Way to hang in there though.
380exc man and Kevin, for some reason, I love the way those Husabergs look. Just different I guess. I really wish I could have taken one for a spin. Veron, you and Rodger were funny Saturday night, I should have gone to Q's with the gang.
Strick, I missed out on a 400 ride. I know you were too busy to accomodate everyone.
Endoquest, I think you sold a couple 520's. Please never let any of my friends ride that thing. Now I have another guy to worry about throwing giant rocks on me .
I'll be back!

We do have whoops in Colorado, but I avoid them as much as possible. Rampart Range however is LOADED with whoops. One trail that comes to mind is called the "powerline trail" good for a couple miles of nothing but whoops! Oh man, my body is aching just thinking about them Since I don't get to ride every weekend, I think the best thing for me is to intensify my workout program. Maybe I'll start doing some stairs; that should be good for me. Hard to get a rythym going if your beat up. Towards the middle of the ride I kinda caught my second wind and was flying through the whoops, but then they wore me out again. My suspension is still bone stock too so maybe a revalve is in its future. Thanx for the tips. See you next year!

Did someone leave a yellow fold up chair behind? If so I have it. It was left in my garage.

Did anyone get a close up picture of the pig??

Hate to butt in but you all make me SICK!

Posted by: Farmer John---------------------

I'm with Ret!

You guys all make me sick :silly:

I seem to be having that affect on people lately

Hey McD- Check out the Gallery. I just posted those pics CSL took of you and "Air" Jordan!

Sorry I took So long then went on So long

Wow what a gas that was ! A GREAT BIG "THANKS" to Strick, Mimi and the rest of the gang, who helped put this together.
As a guy from the Pacific Northwest, that has only ridden in the desert two other times (Jawbone), this ride ranks at the top, of my most fun rides.
For me, this trip started with a 3 1/2 hr. run to Endoqwest's house Thursday night .We loaded Endows bike and gear, then commenced to party with friend, Rapids, till midnight. Up at 6:00a.m. Friday, on the road at 6:45. The drive to Reno went fast, and we were in Reno at 3:45 p.m. The box van that I borrowed held 55 gallons of diesel, so we didn’t have to stop till we were in Reno

Endow and I checked in and had to get a room upgrade right off the bat. Not that I spent much time in the room. I'm such a nice guy, I spent a night in the box van so I wouldn’t have to be woken up by endow yelling at me to quit snoring or him on the phone at 1:30 to the front desk asking for another room.

Friday night the dinner at the Mexican restaurant was great. All were eager to meet and get acquainted with each other.
Saturday morning , Endow and I got an early start and headed for the Moonrocks staging area to find some friends from home, Marshal and Pegasus . Knowing that it had rained that night we were stoked that there would be no dust and Velcro traction . Endow and I unloaded and suited up as more and more D.R.Ner's poured in . WOW, what a turnout. After a short riders meeting, we grouped up for the ride of are choice. .It just so happened to be the expert loop, lead by (Bobby Go like Hell ). ON Fridays drive to Reno, Endow and I talked about how we were just going to ride mid pack and have fun .Well that lasted about 10 seconds. As Bobby started down the road to the first trail, no one wanted to go first . Bobby was 75 yards out when endow and I looked at each other and dumped the clutch.. Down the road, hard right and 6th gear pinned threw the whoops. (so much for tacking it easy) The race was on ,a local guy that goes by Mouthy and Mxbundy started racing and from that point on it was 38 miles of full on gas and go. Mouthy MXBundy and I went bar to bar, passing each other back and forth running like an out of control roller coaster threw the sand wash's. Dam thow's sand wash's were fun!
The last few miles of trail were lead by local go fast by the nickname of Mouthy. I was back about 6 guy's when we came to a muddy uphill with two lines. I went left and all five of the guys in front of me went right. The first guy on the right didn’t make it and it looked like a poker run bottleneck, someone behind me didn’t make the left line and plugged it up tight . After every one got to the top we regrouped for the last time. The last few miles were great single track with lots of rocks . Mouthy and I were running nose to tail when we got to the big downhill back to the staging area . Mouthy, stops and points me to a big rock outcropping to the right, knowing I would go that way he waited for the rest of the pack. He said it was a shortcut and off I went threw 20 yards of pumpkin sized rocks then a two step, 12' drop-off, that put you right at the top of the downhill. Down I go back to the van for some lunch and story telling about the days first ride.
After lunch and some story telling, Endow, Marshal and I went off to see what we could find in the way of new trails. Now when Endow asks you if you want to go find new trails or more like make new trails, top off your gas and check to see if the flashlight in your fanny pack works. We took off out of camp and went up the big downhill, Going up the hill at 4:00 p.m. the sun is in your eyes so bad that you cant see two feet in front of you but we made it anyway including up the rock pile shortcut . We ran the single track from the last part of the ride backwards and ran into Mouthy and some of his local riding buddies. We sat and bench raced and laughed for about a 1/2 hr. then it was back to the sploring ,we found a big long sand uphill that we crossed on the earlier ride ,it just had to be climbed so we climbed it . From the top we headed off to the right and then started down a ridge back that had a mean drop-off that endowqwest got his wish after hanging up on a hunk of sage brush. I think he was at least 20 feet below his bike . Why marshal didn’t get a picture of that I don’t know. From the bottom it was getting dark so we headed back to the van . After a quick shower it was off for the pizza house I think we must have over whelmed them with the size of are group by the way the number system worked .It was all worth it just to listen to all the stories of the day. After the pizza a group of us ended up at a pool hall where Endow and I found are friend Jim Beam After spending too much time with Jim Beam and some great bench racing we all headed back to the Peppermill . I opted to sleep in the box van to keep from getting woken up by Endow, yelling at me for snoring
Sunday Endow and I were not the first to Moon rocks do to spending to much time with Jimmy . We geared up so we could go do some rock climbing, to get warmed up for the second days ride and kill some time wile everyone else was getting ready. Endow had found a line up a steep rock that had a 3 foot gap that you had to wheely over at the top. I did that line a few times and started looking for a harder rock to climb, well I found it. It was about ten feet to the left and looked like a big potato, leaning against a wall rounded over the top and off both sides. The first time I committed to going up I said to myself this might be a little much but made the top and stalled ,next attempt I new the traction was great and didn’t hesitate but stalled at the top again . The third try I tried in first gear, two feet up the rock, I new I was in trouble, .wheel spin, not good ,back off and fall off the face. I kept the gas on, broke over the top with each wheel off opposite sides of the face, A10 foot drop to the left,5 foot crack to the right The 520, wanted the crack. I dismounted to the high side rock and watched my 520 wedge itself upside down in the crack. (A PATETEND BONEHEAD MOOVE). After Kiwi got the pictures he was hoping for and Endow stopped laughing we dislodged the 520 from the crack and drug it to the top . Endow went looking for new lines and I had to follow it was strait up a wall that broke over threw a small crack that dropped strait off the back . Enough rock climbing for that day the ride was ready to start Endow and I opted for the intermediate loop so we could spend some time with Strick Thanks again for all your hard work Strick.
The Sunday ride started out with 20 plus riders heading out to see Strick's pig I have never seen a guy so happy to show off a dead pig. When we were looking at the dead pig the rest of the pack never showed up. Strick headed back to see what happened and hear comes G.S.R. Telling us that DirtyDave, had crashed bad and to come back. Well we ride back to the crash zone to find DirtyDave back on his feet and wanting to continue the ride. You could tell that it was a bad crash by the way the ground was tour up for about 20 yards. DirtyDave finally gets the big Husky going and I take off behind him. We go about 1/4 mile down the whoops and DirtyDave pulls to the side. The first thing I thought was the crash cought up with him but it was only that he forgot to tern his gas back on . I think he had to kick that Husky 50 times to get it started. Off again ,down the fast whoops on a trail that lead back to the Moon rocks. At this point all the gals bailed off and DirtyDave was so tired from kicking that Husky he headed back also. Off we go again long fast whoops to some single track then a real fast road that lead us to a trail section that had about a foot of snow. Some of the So. Cal. Guys were so excited to see snow they would go about ten yards and throw their bike down and start making snow angels. We regrouped at the bottom and headed off down a road to a fast wash and back to a road . Strick said Moon rocks are that way on that road and we lost another ten riders. The last few miles back to Moon rocks were fast down a pipeline road (I think) that had some great jumps every 100 yards then down a fence line back to the main trails back to Moon rocks. Almost back, Endow spots a new hill climb. I had the high mark for a little wile then Endow went over the top clean. One more try for me and I showed off my patented loop out spin move. Marshal just so happened to get a great shot of it . He follows me just to get action shots .
The drive home was uneventful back to Endows house we found a new line and shaved another 1/2hr off the drive. After unloading endows stuff we watched some video that we shot of the trip. It was back on the road for me I was making good time and was within 1/2 hr from home when the rear seal in the transmission of the BORROWED BOX VAN spit right out . thank god I was right at a rest stop exit. Well 5hrs later and $175 tow bill I was home

Bonehead, thanks for reminding me about that little downhill. I managed to locate the documentation in question and have updated the Library accordingly...(at the beginning)

Hi guys,

Bundy here, checking in at last.
What can be said that hasnt already been said. Not much, everyone else hit the bullseye with there reports.

My trip started out fun and ended the same way.
Desert-Racer and Tee where banging on my door at 5 am, and I had that feeling in my gut that this was the start of something special, a trip that would be told over desert campfires for years to come. And I was not let down.
From the Reno Vet Nationals that was the expert ride on Sat morn. to the snow trials on Sun. This was one to remember.
As always everyone from DRN was a pleasure to meet and socialize with.
Endo, Bonehead, I gotta make it up to your neck of the woods to shread some trails. i`ve been wanting an excuse to go up there for a long time.
Angry Jim and all the Norcal crew, same to you guys.
To everyone, thanks for putting up with my dry humor and letting me by on the trails like that.
But especially thanks to DR for the ride and accomadations on this trip. Thanks Buddy.
And a big thanks to Strick, with out whom this would not have been possible.
Also thanks to Strick and Endo for letting me thrash your bikes, 380exc man too.

later mxbundy

PS I hate too say it, but I am seriously thinking of going orange in the near future.
Any one wanna buy a slightly used 250F, its only been rode on everyother weekend by a 6`4", 265# DRN spode, so you know its hardly been used.

Posted by: LongTime---------------------

Bonehead -- I heard you and Endo did the NW proud. And that ride report is excellent! Thanks for taking the time to write it.

Posted by: endoquest---------------------

Let's see here, what can I add to this Mother of all Threads. Maybe some High/Lowlights.
Highlights include the bitchen riding. Mom Nature gave us a great weekend what with the rain and all. We have desert in Oregon but right now it's a bit chilly. Even the grip heaters can't keep your fingers from freezing and your nose from falling off during the Oregon winter.
Another highlight was meeting all of you or at least meeting most of you, good bunch of folks.
The timing was good too but it sounds like I missed a REALLY GOOD National Enduro at Coalinga on the 17th. Three quarters of the entrants didn't finish due to the extremely muddy conditions, ohhhhhhh.
The non riding activities were great too, especially during our last breakfast at the Peppermill when we exchanged puke stories while scarfing a large breakfast after drinking all night. I laughed so hard but my head was in a tizzy.
Boneheads story tells it all for both of us but don't think that just because we stayed in the same room he calls me Endow.:scream:
Prediction: MXBundy and Kelly will buy a KTM soon.
I'm finally back online with a new server and email, hope to see you in Vegas. Cheers, Endoquest.

On my camera, I had only a few pics remaining on the roll (unknown to me at the time). I didn't take a single pic on Saturday, so Sunday I brought it with me wherever I went. I got one of the pig, which was a priority, moonrocks, the kid climbing the hill, thumbs going after him to help after he crashed halfway, one of FarmerJohn's CR, one of the valley & distant mountains and one of GSR building her fire with NO ONE ELSE IN THE SHOT.... I ran out of pics soon after. Zia is out of town at the moment, and hasn't seen them yet.

I had them out on the counter at home for everyone to look at, and my sister is thumbing through and asks "Who's the chick?" Oh for crying out loud. Apparently I'm going to get a beating from my wife when she sees it too. Geeze, what on earth is wrong with women?

Anyone else have this kind of life?

Posted by: gospeedracer---------------------

Just tell her you don't know, just some crazy pyro that wandered into camp, walking around in circles, muttering to herself insisting on seeing if she could blow herself to pieces. You just had to get a picture. You would be entirely lying.

Posted by: Farmer John---------------------

Zio, be sure to tell your sister that the pig was the "chicks" pet.

Thanks for the additional info on my crash...I have zero, zip, nada recollection of the crash or what caused it. It was very reassuring to see the crowd of great DRN'ers when the vision cleared. The bruises are beginning to fade from my left hip but strange ones continue to appear on my left shin/ankle area. I'll be ready for Elkin's Flat in April and hopefully have the husky tuned so that the riding wears me out instead of kicking the bike to restart.

Where are all the pics? Come on! Must see!
Please upload them to the Gallery here: http://dirtrider.net/cgi-bin/photopost/index.pl
See Reno Ride.

Eddie just resized all our pics for me so I've posted some but it will take a bit to post them all.

Looks like I need to increase the space/file size.

Space for each member: 500K
For SupportTeam Members: 3 Meg
Max file size: 75K

Using freely available graphics software, it's easy to get large (pixel x pixel) images compressed to 25-30K (file size) with no noticable loss in image quality.

Posted by: zmr---------------------

Okiewan,
thanks for the Boost-more is usually better...

Posted by: Strick---------------------

Now that the event is two weeks old and everyone has posted their experiences, Mimi and myself would like to thank each and everyone of you for coming. We both really enjoyed ourselves during your stay here.

The items that are of importance to me in helping out with this are first and foremost that everyone had a safe trip to and fro, and no one had to use the hospital map. That really makes me feel good.

I am of course very glad also that the now famous "MoonRocks", met or exceeded everyone's expectations.

The other thing that I find hard to believe, but is also fantastic, no bickering. Everyone really seemed to enjoy each other.

Each year I hope to be able to spend more time with each of you. This year I got to know more people, and some people better.

Someday I hope Okie, and maybe more of the 'staff' so to speak join in.

Most of all though, everyone, we have to thank Okie. HE and he alone made this possible, so OKIE --> THANK YOU!!

Strick
