MX bikes on trails?

Will an MX bike do OK for trail riding? I see alot of used YZ,RM.and
KX types in the local paper. But the trails are tight around here and
I wonder about overheating and spending the whole ride in first and second gear. Plus my only trail riding experiance is on an old
suzuki TS185 that I used to have. I would like to find a used XR250 or KDX200, but they don't seem to be around. I only ask because the used MXer's can be had for under 2k while new trail machines are 4k and up.

I have a CR 250 and I think it does just fine on the trails. I do have my suspension set a bit on the soft side to help the ride on the trails. I think the smooth powerband of 250's really helps in the tight stuff. I would stay away from a 125 if I were you. Just my opinion. Whatever you decide to get have fun.

I ride a 2000 CR125 on almost only trails. I really don't have a problem with the suspension or the power. I ride this bike because I sometimes like to jump, and a KDX just wouldn't work in that department

I ride a YZ 250 on tight trails with no problems. I did add a flywheel weight and changed the gearing to my personal preferance. In the future I plan to do other mods to make it more trail worthy( reeds, pipe, porting along with a big bore kit ). With a little time, effort and of course some cash you can build an awesome trail bike. Whats cool is that most MX bikes have worlds better than most trail bikes. Best thing I can recomend is to pick up a copy of Eric Gorr`s book that is available though this web site.

It should do fine unless you are with some people that you have to wait for or go slow for. You have to keep a 2 stroke moving. Ive found that to be the case when Ive ridden with some quad buddies. But the temp was in the 90's and I sure that had something to do with it also. But I prefer a two stroke on trails because of its agility.

i ride a CR250 on the trails with no problems. most of my riding is done in 2nd and 3rd gear even in the tight stuff.

I have a yz 250 and my riding buddy has a kdx and I have no problem in the tight stuff, you might have to feather the clutch a little or pay $100 and get a Stealy flywheel weight. Just have fun, some bikes are going to be faster than you in the tight stuff but on a MX bike when you get on that strait away with woops you will kick.

I ride a 125 on the trails when I riding with my little girl, she's on a kx60. You wont have any problems getting a mx bike around the trails but I do frequently have to use the clutch because we aren't going fast enough. I don't have to clutch for power but to rev the bike and keep it cleaned out.

I LOVE my KX250 for trails, I added an 11oz. flywheel weight and a gripper seat and it's a WONDERFUL trail bike. The power of a 250 is sooo nice to have and the suspension is magic!

My 96' CR250 is great in the trails. I just changed the gearing and thats it. I do feather the clutch alot when i'm racing though, and thats why my clutch just went. The key is to keep the bike moving, if your following someone really slow, the bike starts to heat up.Keep the air flowen
