How does an 88 cr250 compare to today bikes, has technology change that much?
Does the 88 cr250 have narrow powerband?
Look at buying one. Its between a 93 KTM 300 EXC or the 88 CR250.
I plan on riding GPs, Harescramble and maybe a few mx races.

The 88 cr 250 was known to have a fantastic motor with a great powerband. If you've found one in great shape, it will be just as competitive as you are!
The forks and shock have the basic internals as today.
I'd be scared of any used KTM that old based on some friend's experience.

If that is your choice, go with that Honda. I had one of those. They had a mellow motor for the 88's and for the general use you describe its actually very nice. Even by todays standards. The suspension and ero's are out of date. Can't do much about that "sit in a hole" ergo package but that suspension can be improved radiacally with product offerings today. One thing that Honad will do, ..even with the old ergos', that the KTM will never do; is handle. That era Honda could turn. Very nice handling machines. Even with the top heavy layout. They were also reliable. Of course with an old bike its hard to predict whats going to shatter next. In general those Honda's were well designed and well build machines for that era. I think the biggest limitation you will find is the close ratio gear box.
Parts are still available although the dealers don't stock them. I found it was more likely to find Euro brand parts at Euro dealers for the older KTM-Husky type brands than it was to find Honda/Kawasaki parts at these new "Power Sport" type places. Places like Ultimate KTM in Larimie Wyoming is likely to stock mid eighties KTM parts where I was NEVER able to find 1988 CR125 parts at ANY Honda dealer in Colorado. ( I have one for one of my daughters..geared it down and it turned into a nice trail bike for her after she trashed a little XR) Including the large ones in the BOULDER - denver area. So if you buy that Honda expect to mail order everything...which is what the dealers do anyway.
