Looking for some low end.

I'm looking for some low end without changing my current set-up.
I have a 97 kdx200 that I put an FMF Gnarley rev. pipe on, Boysen reeds and tossed the air box cover.Aside from a leaner pilot and main jets everything is stock. But man it goes like CRAZY.
I love the upper end but there isnt much on the bottem. Any help in this matter would be great. Thanks .....Rippen in NY.

Try putting on a slightly larger rear sprocket. You will have to get a longer chain also, but it's a very nice addition to the bottom end of a 200. I run a 51 rear on my 93 200 with great results. It only took off a tiny bit of topend speed. So slight in fact that I can't even notice my loss on top, but am able to pull off the bottom much better. If you go flat out frequently you may want to go with a 49 or 50.

Don't know much about the bottom on a 200 but you may want to try a CEJ or BEL needle from Sudco. Also maybe a torque ring from Fredette. All low cost things to try. Those needles may require you to get a smaller pilot jet, but some precise jetting may get you some better throttle response for tighter trails and junk hopping.

If you still have the 13 tooth front a 49 tooth rear will work with your 108 link chain. I just did this, it will give you a faster get up and go.. I like the difference it gives you in 2nd and third. MORE POWER !!

FredT (and others),

Why the CEJ or the BEL needle and not the CEL? Just wondering because I just ordered the CEL for my 200 and hope I didn't choose the wrong one. I've just heard a lot of positive comments more toward the CEL vs the others. What about the altitude here (4800-8000ft)?

Posted by: acutemp---------------------

knobbytracks,
You ordered the right needle. The CEL should work well with your #5 (stock slide). I would pick up a few pilots to work with, a 38/40 would be good choices. Start with the 40 but at the higher altitudes a 38 might be even better. Good luck and let us know how it works for you--Dan

re: gearing
A 12t countershaft sprocket costs a LOT less..changes in minutes..you can change it back to what you had before if you wish...= to about a 50t rear.

re: pipeage
If you are using a KG30 (rev) on a 200, your bottom end stinks. Well..ok..let me put it this way..a KG30 on MY 200, and the bottom end stinks (and I have an RB carb which greatly improves bottom end). I use my -30 for riding in the sand, wide open stuff, otherwise it's a -35 (torque) for woods. No question. (imo, objects may appear smaller..., read all instructions, etc etc etc )

Dan knows his stuff. Do what he says. (which is to say, a CEL and #5 will be fine..especially at 4.8-8.0kft!)

I'm with canyncarvr. A front sprocket is a lot cheaper and easier than a rear. In KDX gearing ranges, one tooth on the front is roughly equal to 3.4 teeth on the rear as for as final drive ratios. The guy that I bought my KDX from had 15/48 (steep!). I knocked it down to 13/48 for $8, and, wow, what a difference! Just my thoughts.

You might also consider some head work. For $30 to $35 Eric Gorr will turn down your cylinder head and recut the squish band. Bumping the compression will certainly help your bottom and won’t require the use of race gas. The price is right and you’ll certainly feel the difference.

Thanks for all the info. I will put it to good use and share with some friends who ride with me. Ride safe and ride smart. Rippen in NY.

Has anyone tried just the head work from Eric Gorr? How did you like? Was it worth the wait and money?

Posted by: canyncarvr---------------------

Didn't CDave answer this above?

If 'just' means that to be the ONLY mod made to a bike, bet you anything you like you will never find that to be the case.

By the time a rider gets to EG, plenty of other things have been done for sure.

Posted by: 97Rippen200---------------------

Do you know how much he mills off the head ? I have a machine shop down the road but I doubt he knows. Do you use a factory gasket or aftermarket?

Todd

HEY RIPPEN,WHY DONT YOU JUST BUY A KTM?EVERYBODY KNOWS THEY ARE WAY MORE POWERFUL!LONG AS YOU CAN SHIFT EM'. MURF

Posted by: Jim Crenca---------------------

The R&B carb mod added tons of low end and throttle response to my 1994 with similar mods. At $165 it's alot more than a sprocket but I bet Dan, Dave & CC wouldn't build another KDX without it.

Have you tried a midget?

re: 'How much does he mill off the head?'...and '..machine shop down the road..'

Is there a misconception that EG's head work consists of milling 'some' off the head?

Maybe I'm the one mistaken (wanna bet?), but I wouldn't assume that recutting the squish band and cutting a detonation ring is equal to 'milling some...'

CDave's remark of 'bumping the compression' wasn't meant to be interpreted as 'let's go to the machine shop down the road and cut some metal off this head.'

Some definite advantages there!

1. When it's parked in your garage you can hang a couple paint cans on the bars and use it for a paint shaker!!! (not an original observation of mine)

2. If you suffer from insomnia, you can ride a ktm for about a minute...and at least your hands will be asleep!!

3. ....and they are SO reasonably priced!!!

I am finding that SOME, not ALL but MANY KTM owners take great pride in ownership of their beloved KTM's and look down their noses at the likes of KDX's. Now I won't argue that the KTM's are great bikes, but they may not be for everybody -even if that some body is looking for more HP out of their KDX. As for me for instance I'm pretty concerned that I would not be able to make a 200 E/XC fit me because I am short. There is not much of a seat to trim and I refuse to take suspension travel out to get it lower. (I'm 5"4") So I don't think I will own one, I tried sitting on a new one on the show room floor a few weeks ago and there was no way I would be able to start it or touch the ground. I'm reserching the Husky line because they start with a 35 inch seat height and I'm pretty turned on by their quality and the fact that their new TC 250 diesel has electric start and is said to be very fast too. I project that in a few years the KTM's will not be as dominant in the "only" race woods bike to buy department. Until then, let the Pumpkin heads live their glory -besides it's really fun passing them in the woods because my KDX is such a "piece of crap" and has no right being able to pass such a state of the art race bike right???

Huh??

Fred, I was going to give you credit for choosing your words more carefully and then I read this final line. Am I missing something here??

Mike, there are a couple converted KDX owners that post responses all the time in this forum like; "Should just buy a KTM" to many inquiry's regarding making thier KDX better. I think it is an inappropriate response myself. If the guy wanted a KTM he would have one so he must have reasons for not owning one. I don't feel it is helpful feedback so it gets me a little bothered. Those guys must feel that a KDX like mine is a piece of crap and not worthy of fast woods riding other wise they would not keep insisting everyone buy a KTM. That's my story on that.
