Ohlins rebuild info

Does anyone know what weight oil I should use to in a rebuild of a remote reservoir Ohlins? This is a circa 1982 Ohlins from my Maico 490. Also, I need to know the correct depth to set the reservoir piston.

Any tips or experiences would be appreciated!

Wow, now that's an oldie! I don't know off hand, but most modern shocks use 2 1/2 wt. oil. Unfortunately things weren't so standardized back then. Maybe Ohlins USA can help out?

Boy, you really know how to make a guy feel old. It seems that we used 5 wt in my 79. we set the piston about half way down. of course you can do more, or less. The more volume of air behind the piston, the slower it gains pressure when the shaft forces oil in below the piston, the less volume, the higher the pressure, just like putting more oil in the forks, it leaves less space to compress the air. One hint, if you dont already know it, take the schrader valve out of the resivor, and use a stiff wire(welding rod or spring) to push the piston dow to force any air left in the tube, then use the shock piston to force oil back in. use a mark on the wire to set the original height. One last thing, use a rubber mallet to pound on the shock shaft (the end of it of course) before sealing it up. That will force the air out of the piston that is trapped below the disk. We also plugged up the weep holes in the piston with JB Weld.
