XR400 suspension - spring rate

Hi I'm around 200 lbs and ride a '98 XR400 - Enduro, trails, & nasty rocky type riding at novice level.
I'm the 3rd owner of this bike so I'm not sure what's been done but it's definitely undersprung. I'm planning on re-springing & changing the oil first & possibly revalving after I get a feel for the difference from the respringing.
My Q: The MX-Tech spring generator says I need .44's and the Race-Tech spring generator comes up with .46. The MX-tech generator doesn't list my exact model so I used the closest choice - CRF450 (thumper) whereas the Race Tech generator let me choose '98 XR4. So what spring rate should I go with? Some other people have told me to use .44's so I'm inclined to do that but maybe I should just split the difference. What do you think?
TIA, Jack

Dude, Seems like no one will answer your question. I weigh 185, run .43's in my XR400, ride A class, and I like the front stiff. I also valved the forks and shock, but run the stock shock spring, with 85mm of rider sag. Works great for a XR.

Yeah I was noticing that. Patience is the key. Thx for the reply. I think I'll just go for the .44's then unless I get any 11th hour responses before placing the order.

I posed the question on Woodsracer for ya. No replies yet though. You might want to give your buddies at XR's Only a call. They can probably firm things up about the right rate. Let me know if want a hand when you're ready.

I'm running .46 fork springs, and gold valves. I weigh 190. The forks are plush, and with the fork oil at 130mm, I don't feel any harshness, and have not bottomed them since going to that level. I've put them through some hard hits too.
Darby, I see that RaceTech recommends 85mm of sag. Do you know why that is? As opposed to 100. Wish that setting, there's basically no static sag then. What are the benefits? Thanks!

All the big XR's work best with 85mm sag. With the 95-100mm setting you are using up too much of the shock stroke. (Look how much shorter the shock shaft is.)

Its kinda hard to get a pulse around here sometimes.........?
I would probably use the lead of the Race Tech spring generator. I don't think that it could be any worse the the stock springs.
Good luck and keep us posted as to your results, I'm looking to the same thing soon.
