Cleaning a jersey

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: NeueZiel---------------------

I just got a polyester windchill jersey (thor), but I'm wondering how to clean it good. Since it's polyester, lots of stuff (like hair, for instance) sticks to it. Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Thanks alot,
~NeueZiel

I never clean any of my gear, I just throw it away and buy new.:scream:

Posted by: justql---------------------

If you do that with your bikes, throw that KTM north.:D

Posted by: NeueZiel---------------------

That's uh... an odd philosophy.
And I don't really like that concept, so, do you have an idea?

Posted by: zilla---------------------

My wife always tells me to read teh washing instructions on the tag.. That's my advice to you too sonny..

zilla... who leaves the laundry matters to the fairer sex

Well actually I was in dream mode when I said that, have to admit it would be cool.

Being a single guy I generaly ruin everything I wash so I guess I'm of no help to you.

Just wash it with your other laundry. I've got a Moose XCR jersey I've had for over two years, and I've been washing like anything else, it still looks pretty much new.

Don't think I'm crazy but I and all my other buddies have done this for years. If you stop at the car wash to blow the majority of the grime off your bike. Just hang your jersey and pants, and put the boots on the ground. Use the soap on them, and then spry the rinse on them. My stuff is 1 year old and looks brand new. My other stuff was 3 years old and was spotless. Just make sure the hangers at the wash don't have grease on them. And this also helps out the washing machine, by not getting all the mud and dirt from your gear into it.

I have thor phase 2 jersey and pants. I just put them in the washing machine.

Posted by: Hucker---------------------

I'm with Wraith on this one, I always powerwash my jersey/pants when I'm done riding. Its quick, fast and I'm telling ya it does a pretty good job.

Posted by: OldMaiconut---------------------

Hmmm... I usually wear my gear to and from rides. If I was to wash it at the car wash then that means I would be....NEKKID....not a pretty picture

I blast off my boots at the carwash and let my wife do the gear. Wash in cold water and drip dry.

Posted by: NeueZiel---------------------

Drip dry meaning like a clothesline type drying (although not being that)?

Sorry, but my mind is gone today...

Woolite works pretty good. I used it an my fancy axo pants (that fell apart after about 4 rides:mad: ) Just fill the sink up with cold water drop in a couple of cap fulls of woolite swish things around a bit let it sit for a bit then drain the sink and rinse'em out. the pants weren't machine washable, I think most jerseys can be done in the machine. Make sure you use the right water temp, probably cold.

Posted by: BigBore---------------------

For what its worth, I just toss my riding pants in the wash machine too.

My wife usually power washers the pants and jerseys prior to throwing them in the washer.

As for the polyester jersey - it should be fine in the washer - read the tag.

Posted by: NeueZiel---------------------

Yeah. It did fine in the washer. Thanks for everyone's help!

You's probably be best NOT to put it in the dryer. If you do - only do it for a short time then hang it up and let it dry.

My son had an old jersey that had ground in red clay. It had been washed several times and that red stuff would never come out. Yesterday my wife soaked it in oxyclean for a couple hours then ran it through the washing machine. I swear that thing looks brand new. It went from being a rag to being a nice jersey again.

Thanks for the Tip person 8. I have a nice white jersey with our club logo on it and it has many of those clay stains on it. I did an enduro not to long ago that was dusty with clay soil. It was so bad that I blew my nose and it was that color of that dirt. I also wore a t-shirt under that jersey and it was stained badly as well. I washed it once and soaked it in simple green a couple of times and it came pretty clean on the second wash. I was about to do the jeresy, but I will try the Oxiclean first.

Posted by: NeueZiel---------------------

Why, what would putting it in the dryer do?

Posted by: Roostmaker---------------------

Most likely shrink it.

Posted by: NeueZiel---------------------

That's not a real big problem at this moment (it's already abit big...). Any other effects you can think of?

Posted by: Person8---------------------

Putting a stained article of clothing into the dryer can help 'set' the stain so that it will never come out.

Larry

Posted by: Boit---------------------

Yeah, thanks for the Oxyclean tip. I'm gonna try that on my old and comfortable white O'neal jersey.

Posted by: Person8---------------------

The wife says that you have to disolve the oxyclean in hot water first, then add cold water to cool it down, soak the jersey in it overnight, then run it through the washing machine.

The Magical Washing Machine Elves make my stuff all spic and span. Just come home and throw it on the floor. In a day or two it ends up all clean and hanging up.

Posted by: kmccune---------------------

When the dirt gets caked on and dry, smack it agaist the nearest tree the dirt will fly off by itself:silly:

kevin

Posted by: Person8---------------------

I've smacked my jersey against quite a few trees - unfortunately I was in it.:scream:

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

ain't that the truth. Those ground in blood stains are not easy to get out!
