Hatfield McCoy April 5th/6th

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

There was a thread on a group of riders going to hatfield Mccoy West by God Virginia?

Me, my brother, and possibly 2 other friends... Plan on leaving on the 5th (friday) staying at a Hotel and ride all day at Hatfield on the 6th(Saturday).

SPD I believe was on the list...Perhaps SMB racing and Elpresidente.

Lets get this thing started....I'll be there weather permitting of course.

Peace I luv this bleeping thang ...

Posted by: KDX1---------------------

This is something that I have been wanting to do for a long time. I live a few hours from where the trails are and would like to be in on this. If you are interested in more info: www.trailsheaven.com/areainfo.htm

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Anyone is welcome! Glad to have ya....
I will let you know where we are staying, not sure if you need to stay all night somewhere or if you just live close enough to drive Saturday morning, however i will let you know where we are staying and when we will be there and what trailhead as the date gets closer and I can see what the weather is going to be like....

Posted by: michigan---------------------

Our group will be returning from Hatfield McCoy on April 1st. I'll post our "lessons learned" and a brief ride report.
We're leaving tomorrow! WooHoo!

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Much appreciated! Thanks, also leave your knowledge of different trailheads if you can, Thanks again!

Posted by: SPD---------------------

I'll need about a two week notice to sechedule a day off. I don't think I can make this one.

Posted by: KTM-Lew---------------------

I will be there the 6th&7th. Not sure who is coming with me. I will see who I can get motivated.

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Lew!

You know if they closed wellsville?

Posted by: el presidente---------------------

count me out, i am too poor to make this one, and i am trying to save enough money to ride the Chillicothe Enduro Riders enduro april 28th. maybe next time.

Posted by: Bruce McCrary---------------------

We have a group ride planned for the W/E of 4/19/20/21. It will be the first time any of our crowd has been to the HM system.

The plan is to go to the Bear Wallow trailhead and camp at a campground that is located next to the trails (Devils Ansce?). Our group will include both bikes and ATV's so we need trails that can accomodate both. We also were concerned with getting a campsite as close to a trail as possible for the first trip, and this one seems to fill the bill.

Anyone have any expericance with the trails or campground?

Bruce McCrary
Lexington, NC

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

I doubt I'll have my powervalve linkage part in by then
I'll try to catch the next one though. Let us know how she turns out.

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

This is going to be a play by weather/ear trip....if we bail b/c of weather I'll just edit the topic and push it ahead a couple weekends.

Ok....later...

Jeff I'm actually thinking of coming down your way this weekend with the wifey, it would be my first day out and I need to know how my bike runs?what i got to fix? You know living in the city I can't even start my bike for an extended period of time....

Let me know your thoughts, as usual no guarantees
tx jeff!
Andrew

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Jeff, what linkage part do you need? Isn't the GG motor similar to the CR? Maybe a part from my 97 CR would work. Mine is down now (and will be for a while). Maybe you could use a piece until yours comes in.

Rub it in!!

Posted by: Bill Hibbs---------------------

Hey Andrew, What time are you leaving Friday? Do you have room on the floor of the hotel if I want to tag along? I have a buddy in West Virginia and he'd probabaly meet us at the trail head. Are you planning on leaving Saturday night or Sunday?

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Me and brother have to work on Friday....When it gets closer to Friday I'll call a few hotels in the area, and yeah your welcome to stay with us or get a room in the same hotel, if my brothers freind goes ,you could share sleeping accomadations,if you wanted.... or we'll share and i'll sleep w/ my brother, Yuck!....:o

I would like to run shifts watching the bikes at night for theft reasons, I'll have a covered trailer, If rich goes (still up in the air) but I think he'll go if you go....We could all share time watching the bikes while others sleep, We all know what theft is like, especially in WV they (i used to live there) were known for stealing bikes.....

Sorry if this is difficult to read...I'm at work and I'm trying to be quick about it...
later on...

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

Gomer, it's the actuating piece that connects the linkage to the valve itself. I'm pretty sure it's different on the honda bikes. Mine isn't really in bad shape, but there's a stud that presses into the actuator and it's come loose, not completely but it moves. It sill works the valves right, I just think that it's going to come loose during a ride so I ordered a new piece. Still waiting for the guy to call and tell me it's in. Thanks for the offer though, I appreciate it. I just looked at the parts fiche on your linkage, what in the heck? That's way more complex than the GG assembly, the valves look the same though. What's wrong with your scoot?

Andrew, I'm going to put the bike together this afternoon and run it, see how that linkage is working. If it's good we can ride this weekend sunday probably, since I work saturday morning/afternoon, what kind of bike does your wife have?

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Well if your into slow and boring come ride with us, your trail guide will be much appreciated, however I would understand if you don't want to go(i wouldn't) she's a girl that was very proud to complete the entire Dorr Run loop(wayne) last year in 2 and 3rd gear riding on a Yamaha ttr125L. She just needs to get used to her bike and trails that are more difficult than wayne, we really are just looking to get out of the city, and do bike maintenance and maybe see some sites, that's about all....

Posted by: el presidente---------------------

man this sucks, i wish i had enough money to make my bike run again, i have saturday off, and if i have enough money for gear oil, and antifreeze i am going to buy some, but i doubt i will have enough for front and back brakes. hope yall have fun this weekend

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

On the CR you don't actually connect the linkage from the bottom end to the cylinder, the base has a pin on a plate that rotates around an axis about 90 degrees and the cylinder has a slotted plate on the end of a rod that fits over the pib whn you put the cylinder down onto the base.

Sound anything like yours?

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Hey gomer you of all people know you need to take this conversation to your own thread, HEHEHEHE

that was fun!

LOL, just MESS'n wit ya! (new version)

Posted by: SPD---------------------

Bill mt your pm. Hey would you be interested in going down late fri nite and coming back sat nite?

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

That's when we're headed there Dennis, only riding on Saturday, I sent you a pm Dennis, however I'm trying to find out how to check mine, LOL... You would never think I make a living using a computer, LOL

Posted by: SPD---------------------

I answered yours. I thought I was a computer dummy. I'm not going to stay sunday. A lot of if's. Need to get the bike finished and checked out. Let me know when you read your pm's. I'll send another one.

Must........be........nice........ ........ ........trying........not........to........respond!!

Go ahead I have thick skin,

No I don't know any1 that rides from Akron, still a good hour and 45 minutes NorthEast of Columbus...

Peace, I luv this thing ..... ....I guess its eze riders , jack and robert,

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

How about Troy Maxel and family from Springfield? They used to race the indoor series in Columbus during the winter (a couple years ago, I think).

I went up to their house and raced at Dirt Country a few years ago.

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

i believe my buddy rich knows Troy, I'm not much of a motox racer, more of a woods rider b/c i grew up poor, and unfortunatly its a money sport early in a young guys life.. I shy away from the tracks b/c I want to do every tripple and not ride away from things(it bothers me) so I stay in the woods usually, made it to NewVienna last year a couple times and Honda hills thats about it..

Luve the woods since I grew up in WV riding powerline climbs... Like in Wellsville,OH, however I read it was closed and have yet to know for sure?

later....

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

nah, the CR linkage won't work gomer, but thanks anyway, I really appreciate the offer.

We're not snowbound here though, it was up in the 60's today

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

Gomer - It's a small world. I work with Troy Maxel from Springfield(International Truck). We actually work in Sidney, Ohio. He sold his bike late last year (after it broke down 20 times while riding at Wayne National one day). His kids still have their bikes. Troy did say that he was thinking of getting a new bike (WR250f or something).

Bruce McCrary - We have riden at HM quite a bit. Bear Wallow is the best of the HM trails.

OleDrewBudd - My wife (Wendy) likes Wayne National. She has ridden with us at HM (Bear Wallow & Rock House). Bear Wallow is fairly tough for her, this is where she broke her pelvis in two places last March. Rock House is more to her liking, but pretty boring for the rest of us. It does not have nearly the difficulty/quality of trails as Bear Wallow.

Wish we could meet you guys on the 5th & 6th but we are going to the LL spring ride.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Kelvin...spank him and tell him it was from me. Be prepared for him to repond in kind. Is he still running that scam where he sells the kids then they come back?

Jeff...I think it's in the 60s in my refrigerator.

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

Andrew your PM's ar full, so I'll just leave this here for ya, you're more than welcome to park and ride around the course, just note that there is one field back there that has recently been planted with crops so just kinda keep off to the edge when riding through it. I'll be back around 3:00 after I get off of work, jason might be around out there, I'll let him know that you're coming down.

I put the bike back together last night to see how it'd run, I think it'll do for a weekend's worth of ridin'.

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Ahhh thats to bad you have 2 work till 3 we should be there till at least 5:00 maybe do a fast ride before we go? ....

LOL i"m not sure how to find the entrance into the woods, oh well I'm sure it will come back to me once i get in the woods, My brother would enjoy riding with jason... Is that the presidente?

Oh yeah , i cleaned out my PM

Posted by: mp4798---------------------

Everybody planning to ride Hatfield will truly LUV it. Good riding friends. Please email every moto website u can think of to help us promote and keep this place open. thanks
mp

Posted by: el presidente---------------------

i'm a no go for tomarrow, i am having trouble putting me side case back on. sorry

Posted by: SPD---------------------

Anybody know what this place is like after it rains? Does it dry out quick, or stay sloppy.

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

Dennis ,

Depends which trail you are riding. We have actually riden in the rain at Bear Wallow - it is pretty rocky and dries out quick. It does not get too slippery in the rain. Make sure to run all of the 9X trails. These are the most difficult and make the trip down there worth while.

Rock House - this turns into a mud pit. We call the place mud house. I do not suggest going to Rock House enless you have some beginners with you or some quads.

Posted by: Bill Hibbs---------------------

So what's the story Drew? Do you have rooms booked? When are you leaving Friday? Do you have room for me to crash? Are you in Dennis? You want to split a room? I'm either riding Hatfield with you guys or riding West Virginia with my buddy on his trails Sunday. Knowing my buddy, Hatfield's probably the easier ride. Let me know.

Posted by: SPD---------------------

I would like to go. Can't leave until I get off work fri nite at 11:30. Not sure if I'm going to stay or come back sat nite.

Posted by: KDX1---------------------

I'm planning on going, but my girlfriend needs a ride. Does any body know if there is a place that rents four-wheelers? If not, then it will be just me. Just let me know where everyone is going to meet. :D

Posted by: SPD---------------------

I think there's a place that gives tours but no rental. Something about the insurance.
Bill I'll call you tonite.
Shaun what are you gonna do?

My advice is to avoid Devil Anse campground. Last time I was there, they had no grass, few trees, and you had to pay for a cold shower. It is convienient to be beside the trails but if you plan to ride different trailheads, it doesn't really matter. I would recommend staying at Chief Logan State Park. It is a great camp area with a restaurant, free hot showers, and they have RV sites available.

Posted by: Bruce McCrary---------------------

Ooooh Noooo... Already made reservations now.

Here's the deal though. We will be arriving late Friday night, and ride Saturday , then some Sunday before we head home around 2 or 3 pm.

From what I'm told, we won't be able to ride all of the Bear Wallow trails in that time, so time spent at the campground will be limited. Dang, that Brady guy did seem like such a nice guy too...

So tell me, where is this state park? Is it close to the trails? Our group has a little issue with being able to pack up and move around from trialhead to campground with the vehicles we are utilizing.

Any help will be much appreciated!!!

Bruce McCrary

Posted by: andym---------------------

My biggest problem with Devil Anse is the pay shower. To their credit, grass appeared to have been seeded when I was there. The state park is probably 10-15 minutes from the trail head. It is on Rt10 toward Chapmanville. http://www.chiefloganstatepark.com/ I usually like to spend 1 day at each trailhead but spending a day and a half at one will give you more time to explore. The Bear Wallow trail is my favorite and it looks like they have just made some changes. Have fun and be sure to let us know what you think about it.

Posted by: Bruce McCrary---------------------

What had started out being a couple of us from the shop going on a ride has turned into a full tilt bonifide oh lordy how will we ever pull this off event. The last count had about 25 friends and customers coming with us!

The is a mixture of atv's and bikes, so the Bear Wallow trails with what appears to be more single track appeared to us to be the ticket.

As for camping at the campground we were more concerned with being able to have direct access to the trails and someone to kind of keep an eye on things while we are gone. I'm sure we'll end up trying his showers, but at least my 'toter-home' has a shower that I know works well, so maybe we'll be ok.

I'll certainly be posting a rider report after we get back!!!

Bruce McCrary

Posted by: Bill Hibbs---------------------

Well, I talked to Dennis and we're leaving late Friday night. We should be ready to ride Saturday by 9 or 10. We plan on riding all day Saturday and Leaving that night/evening sometime. We'll be in a Red Dodge Ram Extended Cab V10. I'll be on a KTM and Dennis has a Husky. Can't Wait!!

Posted by: SPD---------------------

I'll be like a little kid. I'm so excited I won't be able to sleep all week so come sat I'll be to tired to ride. Oh well I can't ride when I get a lot of sleep.

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Due to expenses beyond my control (IRS, wifes text book fees) I will not be able to make it, however it looks as if there is a big group going....Hope you all have a good time, I'll pick of the details from Jeff or dennis.

later....

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

hey that was a fun trip through richland wasn't it Andrew, perfect weather but unfortunately not enough gasoline

El pres (jason) went riding with dan out there yesterday and had a bad one, suffered a concussion and miscellaneous road rash/bruise injuries. Good news is the bike isn't in too bad of shape and neither is he

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Yeah, I had a good time jeff , thanks!

Was jason wearing a helmet? Did he crash n' burn on the road? or in the trail?

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

yea he was wearing a helmet, they had just came off a trail onto the main hollow and he was trying to catch up with dan, turned a curve wide in the gravel and hit a bank and endo'd. They told his girlfriend to watch him overnight (waking him up every 2 hours) and have him see a family practicioner this morning. Gave him some pain pills which I'm sure he appreciated.

Posted by: el presidente---------------------

i wanna say first off is that i hurt. if anyone has rode at Richland w/ me, dan, or jeff they know this gravel road i wrecked on. i didn't have my goggles on at the time, and i was trying to catch up w/ dan, he kicked up some gravel and hit my helmet, scared me and i closed my eyes. well i was halfway in a turn and when i opened my eyes i couldn't correct. i went up on a little rise beside the road, hit a culvert. the front tire didn't make it, flipped me over the bars, bike had to have went over me, it slid on the gravel road for about 25 feet, and i slid on grass, and then gravel for about 10 feet. i have road rash on my back, and my shoulders are pretty chewed up. thanks for caring guys.

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Well now that your alright.....

I just wish I could have seen it!

Posted by: rwcwoh---------------------

What kids will do for prescription drugs these days!!
I'm glad he is ok. I've had my bell rung hard a few times , and I'm still sharp as a tack! LOL

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

OleDrewBudd,

Since you can not afford to make it to the HM ride with the rest of the gang - you are welcome to come with Wendy & I down to Tennessee this week-end for the Spring ride at Lorretta Lynn's Ranch. All you have to do is get yourselves to Dayton, Ohio. Only $$ for you two would be entry fees for the ride. You are welcome to travel & stay with us in our RV free of charge. Wendy usually has more than enough food for everyone (just ask smb_racing). To earn your keep - you could drive the RV part of the way down to TN (cause i hate driving that thing).

Let us know.

This will give your wife a chance to ride with another female ttr rider. We leave Friday. Ride Saturday & Sunday. Return Sunday.

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

yea Andrew, wendy is a great cook, very generous folks there.

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Have I met Kelvin? at your place?

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

no he's never been up here for a ride, speaking of that you should really come up for a ride sometime kelvin

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

Be careful Jeff - I might just show up some day.

My buddy (from work) and i have been itching to go out on a good one day ride. Set a date.

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

I'm itching to get to wayne national when it finally opens, have you been there before kelvin? How long of a drive is it for ya? I've been several times to the one in nelsonville but haven't been to ironton yet, I'm wondering what the trails are like there.

Of course there's always richland, and you know where it's at. I'm not far from it, about 3 or 4 miles by road or a mile and a half by woods

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

I've ridden Wayne National at Nelsonville (usualy dorr run loop). Also, we will usually camp at Williams camp ground and run from there to Newstraitsville or Nelsonville. We usually ride the non-public portion of Richland Furnace. Never road the Ironton area. I've seen it on the map.

For us it's a little over 2 hours (around 140 miles) to Wayne National. Let us know when your next ride plans are.

We seem to ride at Hatfield-McCoy more than Wayne. How was your week-end there? We hade a terrefic time in Tennesse at Lorreta Lynn's. 21.5 mile loop. 17 mile of it was unforgiving (i felt real sorry for the guys without bark-busters) single track. Can you say exhausting!

Posted by: Bill Hibbs---------------------

Wow! What a great day of riding! That place is Awesome!!! We ran into KTM Lou and my Buddy Joe met SPD and I there. We pretty much rode Everything with exception to a couple connector trails. We may have ridden them Too but I don't remember. 193 is a great trail. 30ft drop off's, cool creek crossings. The majority of the trails are pretty easy but the scenery is great. We were riding Way too fast towards the end but you just couldn't help it!! Dennis took some cool pictures. Hopefully they'll come out.

We're riding Wayne next week. Probably Wednesday. You're welcome to join us.

I'm definitlely going again. Hopefully Soon!

Posted by: OleDrewBudd---------------------

Sorry I missed it... Glad you had a good time Bill!.....B/c it looked as if it might snow on you this past saturday.

Glad everything went well!

later...

Posted by: Bill Hibbs---------------------

Oh, there was snow! It melted away by Noon and it didn't effect the traction much, unless you got off the trail, that's another story . The snow was stuck on the tree's and looked really cool. I'll try to put together a Ride report. There was a HUGE hill climb you would have liked. Up a big Strip mine pile. We watched a guy loop out his KTM LC4 about three times. I had to show him how it's done.

Posted by: SPD---------------------

What a great time. Looking foward to going again. Only took about 41/2 hr to get there. Can you say 4th gera pinned on the way bavk. I think there was some 5th gear riding also. These guys said they was going to take it slow on the way back. I'd hate to see their fast riding. I got the pic to come out,not bad either for a cheap camera. I'm not sure how to load them. Well see about wed. Depends on the weather. Might be able to make it for a few hrs before work.

Posted by: keith500r---------------------

are there some easier trails at this place, my girlfriend is just starting to ride, and I am wondering if there will be somewhere we can take it real easy until she gets the hang of it, (she's starting on a 95 xr200 we just bought ). by the time we get up there she will have the basics down, i just dont want to be overrun with "experts" trying to show off or something.

Posted by: SPD---------------------

At Logan the main trail is very easy and wide. I don't think that there would be any problem.

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

what time are you guys going to be up there wednesday? I'm at work here in athens til around 1, so I could be up there around 2 depending on how long of a line there is to get permits.

Posted by: Bill Hibbs---------------------

I just talked to Rich, and right now it's looking like Thursday. We usually meet around 11:00.

Posted by: KTM-Lew---------------------

Hey Bill, we actually only rode about half of the section at Bear Wallow. I seem to remember someone that was complaining about their bike being dirtier than everyone elses. I think my response was " you keep falling down, thats why its dirty. :scream: And then there was the sandbagger that rode in the back until it's time to go back to the truck, what was it he said, I'm whipped....... 17 miles and 4 minutes later we are back at the truck, me feeling like my hands had been beaten with a meat tenderizer. The only one with a lick of sense, SPD, was even drawn into the fray but came out unblemished. My Panoram reads--Ride Time 3hrs 11mins--Distance 67.28miles--Max Speed 153 mph.... thats 53 mph, it just felt like ahunert --Avg Speed 21.1 I rode about 36 miles , 30 with my damper post dangling uselessly, by myself. When I got back to the truck Bill, SPD and Joe were just about to go out, so I gased up and Bill helped me get the damper post back in place and we were off. It was a blast. No injury's and great riding. Can't wait to do it again.

Posted by: SPD---------------------

When we going again?

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

Dennis,

I like your attitude. After we went to HM for the first time (shortly after it opened) we saw little point in going to Wayne National.

Let me know when you guys are going again so i (and maybe some buddies) can tag along. I know your curiosity will probably get you to want to ride the other areas - but believe me, Bear Wallow is the best of the three. Go to Rock House after a rain - it makes it really interesting!

Posted by: SPD---------------------

Anybody want to make plans for a 3 day weekend? June or July? Thought about leaving fri morn and coming back sun eve. Camping or motel?

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

I'm in. Make it motel. We usually stay at the Super-8. You can walk to the Shooney's for breakfast then hop in the truck and be at the trailhead in five minutes.

Call me a softy - but it's nice to have a warm shower at night and a real bed to sleep in after riding all day.

I vote for leaving Thursday evening (after work for us guys that work normal shifts) and being able to ride first thin Friday morning.

Posted by: smb_racing---------------------

sounds like a good idea, I'd probably camp though. I hear chief logan state park is a good place to camp with nice facilities.

Posted by: el presidente---------------------

im in, just let me know when

Posted by: Bruce McCrary---------------------

Our crowd will be leaving NC on Friday the 19th around 3 or 4 PM. We're going to the Bear Wallow trails, and staying at the 'Devils Ancse' campground which is located right off the trails.

There are about 25 or so of us going and we have multiple campsites reserved.

A buddy was just up there this past week-end called me yesterday and was positively giddy!! He absolutely loved the place.

Hope to see some of you there.

Posted by: KelvinKDX---------------------

Shhhh. Don't let everyone know. The place will be crawlin with bikes!

Posted by: Bruce McCrary---------------------

Whoops! *sssshhhhhhh* Mums the word!
