Calling all knowledgeable flag people

I've got (what I think) is a kinda strange situation at home. My 16 year old son and his buddys cleared out a corner in the basement for a place to hang out (they actually did a pretty darn good job at it). Anyway, my Son found the flag that was on my dads coffin and hung it up on the wall. I'm wondering if there's any good reason to have him take it down. When I think about it I get this sort of morbid kinda feeling but when I look at it displayed on the wall it seems like it's OK. I told him it was on his Grandfathers coffin and his response was "why not have it out where we can enjoy it instead of having it tucked away somewhere". What do you guys think about this?

You knew your Dad, where would he want it?

Posted by: KXKen---------------------

I think he would like the idea. It's hard to say for sure though.

I have my grandfather's pocket knife, I gave it to him for father's day before he died in sept. 1970. When he died I asked for it back, put it up for a couple of years then decided he would rather me carry it, been in my pocket for 30 years now, I think of him every time I pull it out.

Ken-This is a cut and paste of a cut and paste from a flag etiquette thread from September:

Concerning flying a burial flag:

I believe it can be flown. Here is something I clipped from a Veteran's burial flag site:

The United States Flag Code specifies that the burial flag should NEVER be allowed to touch the ground, nor is it to be lowered into the ground with the casket. The proper proceedure at the conclusion of the grave-side ceremony is:

The Burial Flag is lifted waist-high by the pallbearers and held in this position for the playing of "Taps".
Upon the conclusion of the playing of "Taps" the Flag is properly folded into a triangle.

The folded flag is then presented to the deceased veteran's next of kin "On behalf of a grateful Nation".

The folded burial flag becomes the property of the Veteran's family, to honor the memory of one who has served the cause of freedom.

If it is hung properly with pride or stored properly with care I see no disrespect either way. This is something you and your son should talk about

We have my grandfather's flag still folded into the triangle as it was the day of his services. We're going to get one of those wooden cases to display it in just because it should serve as a memory of a life well spent. It's a family matter more than anything in my opinion.

I would hang a portrait of your father alongside the flag - this sounds like a worthy tribute and remembrance of your dad and your sons grandfather.

When my wife's dad died, the family gave us a portrait, the last photograph I had taken of him before he died. At first I also felt a bid morbid about hanging the picture in the house. Since then we have moved a lot, and this picture always gets put up in a place of honor.

This is a great idea. Thanks BunduBasher.

Hey Ken,
I like the idea of hanging the picture of your dad up next to the flag. If possible display a picture of him in uniform. Then whenever your boy and/or his friends come over to hang out they need to realize that the reason that they can come over and hang out is because of people, like his grandfather, that served their country. Alot of people is this country have no concept of service, loyalty, or respect for the flag or people. Display it PROUDLY!!

FLY IT IN PRIDE I'M SURE YOUR FATHER WOULD BE PROUD ITS ASAME THAT MORE PEOPLE DON'T HANG THE FLAG WITH PRIDE IT SHOULD BE A FEDERAL LAW TAHT YOU MUST HAVE A FLAG !!!

Ken, I think it's great! I wish my grandfather was in the military and I could do what your son is doing. I think the picture idea is perfect. I would be PROUD.
