YZ426 Blue wire mod - Updates

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Well my bike still starts awsome . Now I just gotta get some seat time on this baby . I have only owned my bike since Feb. 2 . Ive owned two-smokes all my life . Now I'll never go back after getting rid of my plug fouling problem. By the way , any of you guys that live in the winter where the rivers freeze, Stud your tires and get on that river . These bike fly on pure ice with studs. You should see the guys with snomobiles do a double take as you blow by them like they were standing still. Really freaks them out when a two wheeled thumper flies by . ( You know the sound of a YZ426 pinned is pretty loud when your behind it ) . Feel free to post updates and tell me some of your stories . Especially if the include Ice riding or winter riding . P.S. not bashing the CRF boys but I was riding with a far more experienced group of guys and two of them had CRF450's and I could real them in any time I wanted . I think i'll stick to the blue until the day a red machine can pull away from me. Dont get me wrong I love Hondas , just not better than my Blue beastyet. Take care everyone ( whatever you ride ) .

A little off-topic again, but I was able to hang with a 450 this past Friday at the track. I'm sure it was all in his right hand, though! He could definitely outjump me, I'm not a big air kind of guy. Felt pretty good for my ego to be hanging with the big Honda! I did see that thing start dancing as we were pulling down a long straight, fourth gear pinned, though. Full left-right about three times in a half second. That's when I backed off. I didn't want him to go down and take us both out. This guy had laid her down about three times already that day, both jumping and in the corners. Pretty resiliant dude for an old fart, he was! :D

As for starting-As long as I remember to turn the gas on (DOH!), mine still starts first or second kick every time. I'm gonna leave it like it is unless I start having problems, which I don't foresee.

havent kicked it hard yet... I went home a week ago, (bike at my parents house since I got MARRIED!)... i had about 45 minutes, so i pulled off the shroud, saw the wire, tried to pull the wire out with a set of needle nose pliers, thought it was budging, but it was the wire sheathing... I KNEW I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE TANK OFF!... of course the wire cut with the clip still inserted.. I taped it all up in frustration, still seperated, tried to kick briefly, but half heartedly...had on some vans ... didnt get it to start ..so I will have to try this thursday when I go back up... will give a report then...

Like i said before,I rode my first thumper last week,02 426 stock,I felt right at home on it,The bike stuck to the corners well, i never felt any of the 2 strokes in the past stick to the ground like that yzf.Power can you say no clutch work at all, it comes on raw and smooth, but strong.I am so confused right now,I have pretty good knowledge of my kx 0r 2 strokes(working on it) i know i can do longer and better lap times on that yzf ,But thumpers are a little more involved in doing top ends.Either way i will have a new 03,but the yzf is looking beter and better can you say yzf 450.The yzf is the best stock bike i have ever ridden or owned performance wise.I never ridden a four stroke before.I might have to try a crf to compare,I can't imagine the crf being better, but if it is, That must be one sweet bike to moto on.I still think i will be buying blue steel in 03.How are those tranny's holding up in the yzf's?

Update: Bike still rips!!!

I hooked up on the blue wire mod from cr man and my bike has not been the same. Let's begin with starting, first kick every time and I promise you guys some holeshots at some D37 hare and hounds. Power is better, crisper, and more topend. Before the mod my bike fell flatter on top. I need a jetting adjustment my bike was running a little lean. I moved the need clip down one and set the fuel screw at 2 turns out.

zcookie don't worry about the bike my entire switch will be replaced with the white bros neutral block off. And for the wife good luck going riding!

This was a thread that the pros on this site didn't touch so us minature karma guys have to consult with Zen. All I can say is This mod works and I will be challenging all the yzfs to starting contest. I have been seeing alot of CR450 not starting so easy also.

"Will someone give me some damn karma!"

so far it works great.... I entered my first harescramble at Budds Creek this weekend.... I went down twice near the end from exhaustion and manuvering around trees... I cant say if it is the Blue wire mod or the Dr.D hot start, but both times getting up, I was able to start the bike on 1 kick. I actually didnt have time to rest, had to get going again!!!... finished that day 41 out of 68, but I finished, didnt quit, even though I think i broke my pinky finger into the first 10 mins from hitting a tree and the clutch lever bending around it, I do not know how I didnt wreck then.....
BTW... I rode a CRF 450R at a track this past tuesday, very nice bike I must say. Even though I am bleeding BLUE, I have to say it is a very sweet. It was so weird not pulling in the compression release, I felt akward, but that is because I am used to the "starting drill". I wont diss Honda for they did an excellent job. I always thought my 250F was no longer like a 125 2 smoker, but after lapping on the CRF, you barely have to blip the throttle to clear items that I have to wind out on the 250F... I felt like I was on my old rm125 again, but it was comfortable to me......
I am very interested into seeing the YZ450F... I really feel that this bike will have some good upgrades, I would like to see the auto compression, that was what stood out the most to me on the CRF, besides the crisp smooth rolling power... BTW, I had no problems cornering the bike either, but I'm no expert either.
...
getting back to the point.... the blue wire mod seems to work after my rides. Wish I could say being married so far was as GREAT :whiner:

Pulled the blue wire on my 250f; haven't had to kick it more than twice since. I have had very little trouble cranking the 250 all along, and have never fouled a plug. I will ride quite a bit this weekend and report monday.
Endosports; I wonder why the smart guys stayed away from this topic?
I do have a question; and maybe the sound-test theory is the answer, but why would a rev limiter be needed in neutral? I though that it would be a handy feature at the start line, but then, duh, I don't start in neutral! Maybe we should wire it to the clutch lever like the drag bikes!
But my point is: why wouldn't the standard limiter be sufficient in neutral as well as in gear?

Posted by: SFO---------------------

blue wire is new to me.
Is there a source on this? :whiner:

Posted by: Big CR man---------------------

SFO - Do a search on possible plug fouling fix , or go to :http://www.thumpertalk.com/bike/ubb...ic&f=6&t=004660
This is where it all started - I just found it on thumpertalk.com and brought it to all of you here. Hope this helps or go here also : http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/sh...lug+fouling+fix

Posted by: SFO---------------------

This is about plug fouling?
I have never fouled a plug...
I also didn't do the BK mod, as my squirt was around a second and I didn't have a bog when I whacked the throttle.
I did do the grey wire though.

Posted by: endosports---------------------

wfo the neutral switch is used because when the motor is not in gear there is no load on the motor and revs up faster and if you held it pinned with no rev limiter your motor will grenade.

Posted by: Jon K.---------------------

Endosports; But wouldn't the standard rev limiter still work? In neutral?

Posted by: SFO---------------------

Who wants to hold their bike wide open to find out?

Posted by: endosports---------------------

The standard rev limiter does work, it is just lowered by the cdi when in nuetral. A standard safety option just like GM in their cars they have a similiar safety.

BTW: I spun out in a turn yesterday and my bike stuck pinned in second and if there was no rev limiter it would have grenaded because the back tire was off the ground.

Karma to all!

What is the purpose of the blue wire and I assume from your posts its applicable to them YZ's as well as the WR's. thanks

Posted by: yz426xx---------------------

Ok, what's everyones secret to starting there bikes on the second kick? I have learned my own but my freinds all do it a different way.

Posted by: biglou---------------------

Second kick? Don't need it. Mine starts first kick! (seriously) Well, that is, as long as I remember to turn the gas on! :o

Posted by: CAL---------------------

When mine is cold(first start for the day), I give two full wacks of the throttle--yes that's right--pull the choke, and kick. Starts first kick 99% of the time. After the bike is warm...pull the hot start button and kick...no throttle, no choke(of course). Starts first kick 99% of the time. My 426 is the easiest starting (kick start) bike I've ever owned. And that's with NO BK mod, NO blue wire mod, and stock jetting. I was worried about all the starting issues I had heard about when I was thinking of getting a 426. But when I went to test ride this bike, the owner told me it hadn't been started in about 2 weeks...it started first kick...in Nikes! I was grinning ear to ear and he knew the bike was sold at that point. I think the most I've ever kicked the bike is about 5 times. And that was after the bike layed on it's side(endoed going down a nasty hill) and I forgot to pull the hot start button.

I'm tickled blue!

And pull the right knob!!

Posted by: biglou---------------------

CAL summed it up nicely. I start mine in sneakers when I am warming up for an oil change. Mine starts hot or cold, first kick, 99% of the time with no BK and no blue wire mod, just like CAL said.

BTW-It'll start just fine with the gas off, and it will run for a little while, too. But when she dies after that, she's dead!

Posted by: rennym---------------------

I sold my '00 last fall and got my new '02 this spring. It only has 4-5 hours on it, and every time I go to start it, I have to kick it 3-4 times.

I'm no newbie to starting these things, as my '00 would start on 1 kick everytime, cold.

I just can't get my '02 to do the same thing. Two twists of the throttle, choke, and kick. No dice. I had a problem with it starting and then quiting a couple of seconds later. Then it wouldn't fire. But a little twist and then kick it would. So I am assuming I should probably get my idle screw set right. It had to change as the bike was broken in.

What is the recommended setting for the idle screw?

RM

Posted by: motohead00---------------------

Alright, now I am confused. I rode a few weeks ago and for the most part my bike starts ok. It was a little finicky a couple of times so today I pulled the light blue wire. Now it won't start at all. Something's amiss in my world.

I'm assuming you mean the "fuel" screw?? I'm pretty sure, mine is 1 3/4 turns out. I'm roughly at sea level.
