Coolant

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

What is the danger of using a coolant such as Prestone Lowtox in a dirt bike if this coolant contains phosphates, silicates or borate(not sure if it contains these or not)? I have been told that the above chemicals may harm the dirt bikes cooling system. Has anyone used this coolant over an extended period of time with no ill effects. Thanks

The silicates in that type of antifreeze will chew up your waterpump seals. The seals seem to be softer than what is used in the waterpump of an automobile.

If you drain the entire system, you can use the Silicate free Dex-cool (orange color) or Havoline 5 year (orange color) or go buy the already mix up m/c or atv antifreeze at a dealership.

Do not mix green and orange together, they are totally incompatible with each other.

What about the Z one, Zertex?!?!?!???
Anywho that's what I use, Mind you I'm no expert. But I haven't had any problems yet.

I think its Zerex that makes Dex-Cool which is orange and is 5 years.

Is there a general color rule here? Green bad, orange good or am I just dreaming? I have been running Peak for while (maybe I think back to the old Peak racing team and figure it must be ok for motorcycles.)

Kaw_Boy,

The artic cat antifreeze I am using is Greenish-blue color. Just don't mix the green or blue stuff with the Orange. The orange usually means 5 year antifreeze and has different ingrediants than the green or blue.

Make sure it says silicate free and phosphorous free.

Hey Kaw_Boy,

I see your from Overland Park, KS. I work for Sprint at 5454 West 110th Street.

We will have to hook up sometime as we got a great riding club called the KC Riders. You can check our webpage at www.kcrider.com

Thanks for the heads up

KDX220rm- I have been trying to hook up with the guys for a while but never did. I rode one time with Jason Stevens (ride was "cut short" due to him severing his toe) I am currently out in So Cal on work until July. The riding out here has spoiled me so much as far as tracks go. I am starting to miss some good trailriding though. I'll hopefully get together with everyone in July. Until then - keep the dirt flying.

Hey Kaw,

Jason and I are very good friends and only live about 5 miles from each other.

Keep me in touch when you get home. my email is RICKM7331@aol.com

Look forward to meeting you this summer.
