2002 65SX chain+sprockets

My friends son has a 2002 65SX, he has only ridden the bike about 6 times and the chain is gone. I had to adjust the chain before every ride, now it`s trashed. Somebody told me the stock chain for that bike is very thin and weak, and to change the chain to a better one you also have to change the sprockets. Anybody know anything about this?
