Skid plate

I have been reading the posts on skid plates.

If I ride enduros on my 1992 KDX200E3 should i install a skid plate or just a pipe guard.

Has anyone done damage to the underside with a guard.

Also there doesn't appear to be much choice of guards for this model in the market place. Many are no longer available. Any suggestions, prefer something to protect the water pump.
