Im lookin to get one but I dont know what a good price on one is. The local dealer has retail (5399) on the sticker price and i might be able to finnagle 200 off of that. Would 5200 be a good price?

www.kbb.com or www.nadaguides.com or www.traderonline.com will yield some good info for you.

If it is a 2002 then 5200 doesn't sound bad to me but I was on a waiting list for the 2001 and paid 6k for mine

Last month I was looking to buy either a YZ250 or YZ250F here in Chicago. What I found was that there was more than one dealer offering them for under $5,000 not counting sales tax within an hours drive. The cheapest was $4,700 plus sales tax. That dealer is now out of them so that deal is gone but I'm sure you can get others for less. I saw him Saturday and he is getting another shipment in from dealers that can't sell them.

I also noticed yesterday they have them on cycletrader in the mid 4's for 2002's if you don't mind a used one. Another factor here in Illinois is you pay a flat $25 sales tax for a used bike when you title it versus the full sales tax on a new one which for me was $305.

Here are a couple of 2002's on cycletrader, one is brand new and priced under 5k and the other is barely used:

and

One thing I am seeing now is that the sky high priced 2001's that folks paid $6,000 for and have tried to sell used in the $5,000's are showing up less and less. I feel bad for those people, but when you pay over list for a new bike you are going to take a big hit if you try and sell it used within a few years. It reminds me of the PT cruiser and Miata's when they first came out.

The CR250F will be the same when it comes out and those that pay high prices to get the first one will take a big hit when they go to sell it. Unless your the sucker willing to take it off their hands for a high price. Not much demand now for the 250F or at least not the demand they had before. There are plenty new ones for sale that the dealers are now willing to deal on so don't let them kid you when they say hard to find or super hot. Not anymore, there are still plenty of new ones to be found for under $5,000

New 2002 250F's can be had for under 5K. If you go out of state you can save tax and title/registration too. Many dealers will include shipping too since there is no make-ready. Otherwise, shipping is only about $200 or so.

This is the route I plan on taking when I get my new bike in July (or sooner).

Just do a search on cycletrader.com and look for 2002-2003 YZ250F nationwide. There are deals to be had out there...

I agree. New or used, with growing "e-commerce", the world's becoming a much smaller place. Look hard enough, and you can find somebody with a mint '02 who is looking to just dump it for the cash (got hurt, doesn't like it, can't start it, etc.).

With no acceptable local dealer, next time I buy a bike I'm going to scavenge the net for the best smokin' deal.

Thanks for the help, im going to search some more and hopefully I can find one new for under 5k that is fairly close to West Virginia.

A general rule is to take $500 from the msrp this is usually what a dealer will go if they don't have a sale or special going on. Unless they are hard to get then you will probably not get thet much off.
