I have never owned a bike before and wanted a 90's model to trail ride. I am 6'2'' 235 pounds. what bike would suit me?

Honda XR400, XR250, or Suzuki DRZ 400. These are just examples of good, solid, proven, and reliable bikes that you can't go wrong with.

late model KDX 200/220... You can ride it as slow or fast as you want on the trails, and it will last forever! A used one with all the aftermarket goodies can be found cheap.

I suppose a '87 CR500 would be too much. I found a good deal on one what do you think.

I think a xr 200-250 would be ther perfact bike

I am just selling my xr200r, because i am moving to a bigger bike. It was a great learners bike. I am about the same height and weight as you and it hauled me around pretty good. The shocks are a little weak for 200+ pounds, but as long as you stay off the big jumps youll be fine. Also the reliablity of this bike is amazing, my vavles are worn way past specs and it still runs, I cant stop the thing. (if any yz250f owners out there, I am I too big for 1? sorry to intrude on ur post)

Jason,

What you want is a 4-stroke, if you don't know what that is then ask. Because of these simple reasons:
1. LOW maintainance, 4-strokes last for ever, i have a 1983 XL185S still runs brand new, no service done to it.
2. No premixing the gas. On 2-strokes you need to mix the gas with oil, on 4-strokes you just poor it in the tank no mixing done.
3. You get a lot of bottom end power for the beginner rider type. You don't need to floor it to get up a small hill. You can do it in almost any gear.
4. Most 4's have really good re-sale value. (especially Honda XR's).

All i can say is that it sounds like you should get a Honda XR-250R. It is sort of heavy (not much), it costs less than a 2-stroke, and it delivers power where you need it.

thanks for your reply I will look for a XR250R

I'll cast another vote for a Honda XR, but urge you to consider a 400 too. You're a bigger guy and will top 250lbs with full riding gear. The 400 only weighs about 15lbs more and has considerably more power than the 250. As you improve and become more comfortable with riding, I bet you'll appreciate the extra power of the 400.

I'm gonna go with the KDX 200/220 here. They are very easy to ride and have sufficient power for someone your size. It also has a pretty good weight advantage over the XR. A KDX is porbably the lowest maintanance 2 stroke you can buy. It has tremendous hop up potential as your skills increase and they handle well. It is really a matter of opinion. I started out on 4 strokes but found latter that 2 strokes were alot more exciting to ride.

As for the CR500, I think you would be better off riding a crate of dynomite
