Simple motocross question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

All the races I goto are supercross. I'm planning on going to a motocross race this season, and have yet to learn the schedule. Could someone explain to me the different motos? I understand that there are two of them, and the winner for the weekend is the best of the two. Now how does this work? Are both motos raced in the same day? If so, how much rest time is given between motos? How do they go about qualifying? A quick explanation would be greatful....Thanks.

Hopefully this is a simple enough answer:

All riders (except the top 10 in pts...I think) have to qualify to get into the program. Some qualifiers may be run on Sat.(depending on the number of riders trying to get in the race). and then on Sunday more qualifiers are run to narrow the fields down to 40 riders per class (125 & 250). Once all the qualifiers are done, both the 125s and 250s run two motos. The 1st moto is the 125s, then the first 250 moto, and then the second moto for the 125s and then the final 250 moto.

Ties are broken by the best finish of the second moto...example a 2-1 beats a 1-2 because the rider won the second moto.

If I missed anything I'm sure someone else can fill in the blanks or correct me.

Have fun at the races ! Should be a great series !!

Mx Dude that pretty much sums it up.

I just wanted to add that motocross is way more interactive. You can watch from anywhere on the track and hike around to get different vantage points. It is good to see some so. cal riders in the mix.

If you haven't been to a race yet make sure that you go to the Glen Helen race in San Bernadino. The track is awesome and you can watch from anywhere.

Have you guys checked out Pirumx yet. I went last weekend, the track is pretty cool except the jumps are small. I blew out my knee overjumping a small double so one week until surgery for me. If you guys live in the area I am opening a new location in the Santa Clarita selling cheap parts and tires and working on bikes especially fourstroke performance.

Kevin if you are interested in joining my crew at the glen helen race let me know I will be buying tickets soon.

Hey endosports,

Was the Piru track crowded ? I used to go there before they closed, and was thinking about going out there sometime soon to check it out. Can't beat having a track 20 minutes from the house

Let me know when you open your shop and I'll stop by and check it out.

Sorry to hear about your knee......hope you're a fast heeler !!

Also for the qualifying- any rider with a previous championship does not need to qualify.
Points are given each moto by place with 1st =25 2nd=22 3rd=20 4th=18 5th=16 6th=15 then on down to 20th=1. Both motos are added and asMXdude said ties are broken by best 2nd moto place.
Nothing like going to an outdoors national- SX is all about show and entertainment while outdoors National MX is about racing.

Alright, just a few more questions. Laps... Do they do 20 laps for 250 and 15 for 125? Compared to supercross, Glen Helen is a long freakin race. Average laptimes are almost 3 minutes, and 20 laps of that? Sounds like fun.

So with that out of the way, any recommendations on someones first motocross attendance? Particularly Glen Helen? What time should I get there? How soon before the main event. Is it difficult to get a decent spot to watch on the track? And I'm looking at the event map, and it doesn't really show many restricted spectator areas accept on one far side of the track. Does that mean I can just chill anywhere on the track and watch? Sounds pretty fun to me.

Thanks for the offer endosports, if I decide to go I'll let you know. But on your note, where is this Pirumx track? Where can I get some info about it?

Thanks everyone for your input.

The motos are 30 minutes plus 2 laps for both 250 and 125.

check out their site pirumx.com

The track was getting crowded as I was leaving. There was a GP in Gorman and the track being so new tends to draw a crowd. It felt crowed on the track, it is cut out of the mountain and is narrow in some spots. Small jumps out of turns with some cool uphills and downhills. I really liked the turns the ground was nice and tacky in the morning and the new dunlops hooked up. I had poor judgement and sat down off a small double and overjumped it and hyperextended my left knee. No crash just damage to me.

Ok, so as soon as the clock hits 30 minutes, regardless of where the leader is, the leader crosses the finish line and then continues 2 more laps to the finish. If I'm wrong, correct me.

endosports, I don't particularly like the Gorman track. It's too slick and I dislike some of the turns. I plan to check out this piru track. I'm going to assume its very uncrowded on Wednesday practice or at least while high school is still in. I want to goto LACR as well, I've seen the track and it looks very clean. My buddy tore his ACL and is just getting the OK from his doctor to ride again now. 5 months with no motorcycle is driving him crazy. I'm considering getting those Asterisk knee braces to "help" prevent this from happening to me.

You have it correct

Posted by: Mx Dude---------------------

Kevin,

Checkout http://proride.com . It has directions, pictures, schedules..everything you need to know about the MX tracks around So. Cal.

Piru is probably the closest track to Simi. If you go through Moorpark to the 126, the track is only a couple of miles from Fillmore.

LACR is much more challenging than Gorman, and can be pretty crowded on weekends, but it's also a lot more fun than Gorman. There are 2 full sized tracks at LACR, so if you get tired of one you can always go to the other.

Be sure to checkout the places to ride forum to see when and where everyone is going. I'm always looking to ride with new people, so drop me a PM sometime and we'll meet up somewhere.

My .02 worth !

I may be mistaken, but I thought they timed the first lap of the leader and then determined how many laps could be run in 30 minutes using that time and added 2 laps to that. That way they knew how many laps were going to be run by the second lap and knew what lap the half way point was. Somebody please confirm which is correct.
