Anyone have one of these Yamahas or know about them? I have found that they are 2 strokes based on the YZ250's, but with 18" rear tire and 5sp with wider gearing and a bigger gas tank. Anything else I should know about them? Are parts going to be hard to find since they stopped making them in '97?
Thanks...John.

The first ones came out in '89 and were called a YZ-WR250. I believe they actually had YZ graphics and were a detuned YZ250 with a wide-ratio gear box (hence the WR moniker), a FWW, a lighting coil (but no lights) and a larger tank. When the YZ's went to a 19" rear wheel the WR stayed with an 18".
I believe the last change came in '94, so basically there were two versions, the '89 to '93 and the '94 to '97. I'm not sure of the specifics of those changes.

I had a '93 WR 250 and didn't have a difficult time finding anything but graphics. Clarke still sells gas tanks if you need one (you can get a WR oversize or a YZ tank... just fyi, the '92 yz tank fits the '93 wr even though their books say different).
You may have to wait on some tranny parts here and there depending on what you need but overall you shouldn't have a long wait for much.
I really liked mine. The suspension is outdated but for woods or beginner/intermediate MX it works really really well.

FWIW, the bike has a reputation as a strong runner. If the motor is healthy, you won't be giving away much (if anything) to most newer 250's on the straightaways.
Some of the mags whined about the bigger tank getting in the way.

That's putting it mildly. I believe they compared it to riding the Exxon Valdez. The one I rode, a '94 model, didn't seem bad.

I have a 93 WR250. It has been a very good and reliable bike. It has strong low end with a hard hitting mid range that goes flat on top. Where my friend's 93CR250 starts hitting strong, the WR starts signing off.
No problems to speak of. I have had no issue w/parts. Had a slight problem getting a replacement seat cover. I went w/OEM, but afterward read here that there are aftermarket ones available. I had suspension work done and it was better. It does not like the motox tracks much. It kinda beat me up on the track. It could have been my suspension settings in combination with how I asked to have the suspension set up by the rebuilder. It works well in woods or mild motox type riding.
I have a yz type tank and cut the radiator shroud mounting down so it was slimmer. My 14 yr old son now rides it.
It does seem to run rich from 0 to 1/4 throttle. I went w/a smaller pilot and lowered the needle and it cleaned it up quite a bit. It still has a slight gurgle but will rev thru it w/o extra throttle.
I really like the bike and my friends do too. Only complaint from my friends is that it hits so hard down low that it tends to chuck the front end up, kinda hard to steer w/the front end in the air. Me, I like it that way

I went with Delta v-force reeds and Eric Low End porting. After that it hit really well all around.

Hey, thanks guys. I'm going to call on a '96 in the paper for $2500. We'll see...
