Trails in SC (Manchester, Francis Marion, ETC.)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Hey Folks,
Thought I'd start a thread where we can post the current trail conditions for SC riding areas. Anyone that has ridden the following areas lately please post the conditions.

Thanks,
Scott

Manchester - 5-5-02 Major WHOOPS! All trails. They just reworked the MX track.

Francis Marion -?

TNT -?

Cedar Springs -?

Parson's Mountain -?

Enoree -?

Others-?

Posted by: yamahaxt---------------------

Rode at Enoree about 3 weeks ago, trails were in good shape, Parsons Mountain 2 weeks ago, trails were in good shape except for about 2 miles that was rutted out pretty bad, Cedar Springs is suppose to open May 15th.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Yamahaxt,
I've heard good things about Parsons Mt. We're going to give it a try soon.

Thx,
Scott

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

I've been to Parsons's mt. once a few weeks ago. It was excellent. Not as good as TNT but still good. ATV ruts the whole way around almost though. There are also some tough spots that are uncrossable unless you are on an ATV and even then I wouldn't do it but there is always a second route to take around most of that stuff.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

SOLO,
Say TNT is good? That's also on the "to do" list. I've only tried Francis Marion and Manchester, I'm ready for something besides continuous sand and whoops. Manchester has 19 miles of it right now.

Thanks,
Scott

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

TNT is good? no...... TNT is GREAT! They have anything and everything. Very well maintained and it is just perfect.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Solo,
TNT just moved up on the priority list. Thanks for the report! :D

Scott

Posted by: yamahaxt---------------------

You could do Parsons and Cedar in the sameday. Cedar Springs is less than 30 minutes from Parsons. TNT does have a good trail system. We rode there a month ago. BSCUTTR where are you located in S.C.? I'm located in the Upstate, Anderson SC. Maybe we could hook up one weekend at Parsons or Cedar Springs.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

yamahaxt,
I'm down in the low country where I-95 and I-26 intersect (near Holly Hill). It'd be great to meet and do some riding. There are 5 of us that ride together and a couple of them have ridden up your way. Both went to Clemson. In fact one lives in Anderson now and comes home on the weekend.
I'll have to shoot for June, as I have a crazy schedule this month. Is there a tentative weekend that works for you? I round up the guys to see what would be good for them as well.
Thanks for the offer and let's make this happen!

Scott

Posted by: yamahaxt---------------------

Know your area well, my grandparents have a lakehouse on Santee. As far as a riding trip there are 4 of us that ride together and we were trying to get together for a trip to Roy Taylor ATV area around June 8th. It's about 30 minutes above Cashiers NC off of 107. Since you are familer with Clemson you probably have heard of Cashiers. Send me your email and I'll keep you posted. My email is blairbo@bellsouth.net.

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

yamahaxt, I live in Clemson, or more appropriatly Six Mile. Most people don't know where it is but you should.

I don't ride trails often but I am definitly up for a ride at parsons mountain or TNT.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Yamahaxt,
I sent you an email so we can get the ball rolling.

SOLO,
We'll all have to hook up for this. Should be allot of fun.

Don't you wish DW2 was closer to us?

Scott

Posted by: yamahaxt---------------------

Solo, I work in Clemson and do know where Six Mile is. I'll hook up with you guys on our next riding trip.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Hey guys, don't do it by email...Do it here so I can come crash the party! (I promise to bring Ivan :scream: )

We used to ride at a track near Holly Hill. It was one exit north of 26 on 95, head east 3-5 miles, then left on a dirt road for 1/2 mile or so through an orchard. Sound familiar? Is it still there?

If any of you guys are willing to head up to TNT or Turkey Creek Sunday, let me know (here).

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

HLGomer,
Very, very, small world. That track is 1/2 mile away from my home. In fact, my friend that lives in Anderson owns that track. Remember Mark S. on a '91 RM250?

He also has miles of dirt roads, power lines, single track, etc. and I have a 3 mile loop here at my house. We're working on connecting all this together so we don't need to trailer at all.

Anyway, the track is still there but needs some maintenance. It needs to be sprayed to kill some vegetation then massaged a little to break up the hard pack. Most of us are riding woods but still venture over to the track on occasion. Where I gladly watch those younguns jump.

I wish I could head up your way this Sunday, but schedule says not until June. I'll round up my guys and post a date when we can head your way. Should be some fun.

Scott

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

I don't remember what I had for lunch, much less that long ago. :scream:

I think the last time I was there was winter / spring of 95. I had a 90 YZ250, #969 at the time, then switched to a 95 YZ250.

I've got a friend (works for a bobcat dealer) who would show up with equipment if it meant that he could ride down there sometimes.

Let me know when you guys can "head north"!

I'll talk to Mark and pass it along. I'll bet he'll take you up on that offer.

You bet! This could turn into a South East DRN Spodefest! I'll be the spode.

Ivan,
Where are you from?

Scott

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Ya got me. I've been sitting here trying to think of another valid reason and I'm stumped!

I live in a van down by the river somewhere outside of Spartanburg, SC

I think we need to invite some Georgia and Alabama boys up for the Memorial day weekend ride if we decide to get together then.

Ivan

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Ivan,
You ever ridden with DRN member Mack Reed from Charlotte? I see in your profile you do the HS scene. He's a fast guy, of course you may be faster. :scream:
Memorial Day isn't good for me, but soon afterwards....

Scott

Posted by: truespode---------------------

I am not faster than Mack I can tell you that. I believe he rides a Kawasaki and won the overall in the 250 class for the Mid-East HS?

If that is the same he and Gomer tore up a hill at TNT and I believe there is some footage on the web somewhere.

I have ridden with some fast people (like Steward Baylor <sp?>) but I myself am nowhere near fast. I just enjoy being out there.

If anyone thinks I don't live up to my monicker of Truespode they will be sorely dissappointed

Ivan

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

I might could make it up if I can borrow a bike, my suspension is off the bike.

What's wrong with it?

Will it be ready by next weekend?

Ivan

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

Getting it revalved. Won't be here in time I bet.

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Well, if you can make it on Memorial Day I'll haul Jenni's bike down and we can swap off riding mine if you like?

Ivan

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

Sounds good, we are going to be in NC that day anyway and my parents gave the OK. Thanks Ivan, I appreciate it! If you can't bring the bike or if Jenni want's to ride I don't have to ride. I have fun just watching.

Me too! Bet I can give you and run for your avatar name! How 'bout UltimateSpode for me.....LOL

Yea, that's the same Mack. Good guy. He came and ran with us at Manchester. I didn't get to see him much.....he was too far out in front. :whiner:

Just in case there's a change in plans (doubt it, but you never know) for M Day, where you guys headed? Sounds like SOLO's in. Yamahaxt? Gomer?

Scott

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Mack was fast...scarey fast in the woods.

I'm glad we talked him out of trying to do that step-up over a fallen tree. I don't think it was possible and I didn't want to haul out the pieces if he tried.

I'll try to find those mpegs.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Gomer,
I'd like to see those mpegs. When Mack came down to Manchester he had that once a year crash and broke some ribs. :scream: Was back to racing a 2 weeks later.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Whew! I only have 10 MB ftp/www space on mindspring so I had to unload everything else. There are a few from that day, but I still ran out of space.

www.mindspring.com/~mnyland/

The little hill we were playing on isn't very big, but it has a fairly short run and a vertical lip that you have to jump up and over to get on top.

Download them if you want them because I'll probably clean them off to put other stuff up soon.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Gomer,
I've got 'em downloaded. Cool stuff! Is that hill at TNT? The still over the whoops....nice.

Thanks,
Scott

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Thanks! The hill is in the woods at TNT. All of those were taken 11-11-01.

The picture coming out of the whoops is a little jump after the whoop section. That is exactly where my bike died Nov 27 last year, sending me and the bike all the way over for an inverted landing.

They've just moved the track some so those whoops and the jump are gone.

I have a few more .mpgs and .jpgs from that day, but my mpeg viewer on Linux doesn't like them very much so I don't know what's in them.

You mean you need to screen them uh?
Go head and post 'em, we'll let ya know what's in there!

Man, you and Ivan need to make a motion to get DW '03 over our way. TNT maybe? I'd love to go this year, but just a little too far.

BTW, I should talk to Mark about the track tomorrow.

Scott

Posted by: john loggins---------------------

are there any hills at all in south carolina? they don't have to be all that big to impress me,,,,but I am moving to Florida this summer and leaving the awesome riding of Hawaii behind (for a little while anyway)

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

John,
Yea we have some hills. Maybe not as big as what you have, but we have 'em. The further west you go in SC, GA and NC the more you get. Check out the vids in High Lord's post, it'll take you to some cool hill climbs.
Where in FL. are you moving?

I got up the rest of the jpgs and the 2 mpgs that I don't know what's in. Let me know if it's decent.

http://www.mindspring.com/~mnyland

I just remembered...all of those pictures and mpegs were taken that day when I didn't have my powervalve hooked up correctly (it was always closed). I guess it didn't make much difference, I don't rev out a bike (except Ivan's ), anyway.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Gomer,
More good stuff. The vids are you on the track in the rhythm section, TT and Double. Nice air....I only dream. :whiner: What cam were the stills taken with? Very nice!

Did you see my comment on DW '03?

Scott

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

So there were no recently domesticated farm animals in any of the mpgs?

The stills and the mpgs were taken with the same camera. I don't know what it is, but I think he mentions it on his site, www.planetmustang.com

Since DW tries to be somewhat centrally located, I think the closest to us that it will ever be is TX or IL.

We do have regional spodefests, though. We did them at TNT in the spring of 97 and the early spring of 2000. It is amazing how much work and planning goes into a get-together of any significant size. I've helped with a few and I'm not looking forward to organizing another. Attending, yes, organizing, no. Ivan and I learned how to get stuick with several hundred dollars worth of shirts.

No, I'm very disappointed too! .....

How 'bout TN? Just right of central. Loretta's? I'm sure Okie could pull it off.

I'll keep my eyes open for the next spodefest near us.

Thanks,
Scott

Gomer,
Done deal! Marks says to come on. He and I can get together a few folks for track clean up, just add Bobcat and it shouldn't take too long.

He remembers you guys coming down and you on the '90 YZ. I'm going to see if we can get the track sprayed (kill the vegetation) this weekend. Just let me know when and we'll go from there.

Scott

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

This is in Anderson you say? I could almost definitly make it out there anytime to help out.

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

SOLO,
No, this is a track Gomer use to ride down near Holly Hill (near the intersection of I-95 and I-26). The guy that owns it lives in Anderson, but comes home on the weekends. But you're still welcome to come ride once we get it back in shape.

Scott

Posted by: _SOLO_---------------------

Don't know exactly where Holly Hill is but it can't be that far away. I could show up a few days for sure I bet.

Posted by: mp4798---------------------

You guys need to try brown mtn outside of morganton nc.

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Cool! I'll se if I can find his number tonight. Ivan, do you have Jason's number?

Posted by: bscottr---------------------

Gomer,
Just let me know when and I'll get it rolling on this end.

Jason who?

Ivan

Posted by: High Lord Gomer---------------------

Oops, I got it. Remember Jason and Clayton from the JMX series last year?

Posted by: truespode---------------------

Ahhh... yes. But they didn't talk to me too much so I don't have their number. Sorry.

Gomer, you are the only one twisted enough to give me your phone numbers

Glad to see so many local folks on this forum!!! I live in Elgin...just northeast of Columbia. I'm brand new to this sport and have been riding at Manchester. I thought all of those whoops in the trails down there were just normal, but after reading this, I see that this isn't so! All of them whooped up trails motivated me to try the mx track which I enjoy more.

I haven't tried TNT yet. A friend of mine in Rock Hill told me that TNT is dangerous because it is usually so crowded? Any comments there? Given my spode status, is this something I should be worried about? I have read so many good things about TNT that it must be pretty cool. The pictures and video of Gomer are terrific!!! You make all of those jumps look way too easy!

I'd love to meet/ride with you guys anytime! I'm a newb looking for friends!

TNT is only as dangerous as the rider allows it to be. If you don't hold your line on the track the faster riders will possibly land on you. Having said that it is not uncommon later in the day for the 65's to be on the track with the fast riders.

Just hold your line.

The trails are in pretty good shape and are not near as crowded.

Don't let your friend scare you off from one of the best riding spots around. I have been riding there for 3 years and when I first go there I'd putt around in 1st gear around the whole thing. I would not go out when it was really crowded but it usually goes in waves so just time your breaks right if you are worried about the other riders.

any other riders near bennettsville? I go to clemson, but this semester i'm in bville interning/cooping. I am originally from Sburg where truespode lives.

Posted by: USC Rider---------------------

Hi all,

I'm a student at USC and I've always been interested in learning how to ride a bike, and I've always been fascinated with off-road/trail motorcycling. I think I might be close to convincing my parents to let me get a bike...

As I said, I go to school in Columbia, but my family lives in Charleston. I'm a complete newbie, so where are the best trails/best places to go riding in SC? Any near Charleston?

Anyway, as I mentioned: I'm completely new to this, so where can I go to get info about learning to ride on trails/off-road? Are there special classes to take? Is a special lincense or permit needed to ride off-road or on trails?

Any and all input is appreciated. Thanks!

Posted by: linusb---------------------

Do you have a truck to haul a dirt bike? A place to keep it? If both these answers are yes, look in the Carolina Trader or ebay and find a decent bike. Have you ever ridden a motorcycle of any kind before? If not, there is a large sand field off of Clemson Rd that is just flat where people frequently ride. It would be an ideal and close spot in Columbia where you could simply learn to ride. After that, you have TNT in Chester, SC and Manchester State Forest in Sumter. If you go to either of those two locations, you'll find lots of riding buds.

I would figure about $2500-3000 for a decent used bike and maybe $500-700 for safety gear...a helmet and boots are most critical.

Haha, I guess it really sucks to be me. There are plenty of "Motorcycle-only" lots on campus, so storing the bike is no problem, but I have no way to transport it.

Posted by: Barbarian---------------------

USC Rider. You need to get a dual Sport bike. That's a street legal dirt bike. I lived near USC (just moved to Lexington) and you can find all sorts of old roads and trails if you look for them. I know a great practice area that I rode for 6 years behind the farmers market, next to the Williams Brice stadium. It's loaded with berms and has a short but technical trail.
Do you at least have mountainbike skills? That will help you learn faster.
