New Fork Seals, Already?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So, I go out to my garage the other day (My motor is out of my frame) and what do I see? Oil all over my fork tubes! Not a good sight. I put in new fork seals 1 year ago (10 fairly easy rides) and they haven't ever leaked, until now. I tried to kind of clean them out and there was a lot of dirt/sand in them. Now that I cleaned them they don't leak as much, just a little. I haven't gone riding yet so I don't know what is going to happen, any hints as so that I don't have to get new seals? Just put in more oil? My motor is costing me a fortune!
Thanks Guys.

Studboy,

An ounce of prevention is a pound of cure right? Keep the dirt out.. Avoid the power wash, don't let mud, or residue dry on thr chrome and you'll be golden.. But for now you don't have much choice.. Fix the problem.

Jer

Thanks For the Response, I appreciate it.
Could the forks leaking have to do with the cold here? Or the fact that I didn't ride it for a while? My forks never leaked until I let it sit after my last ride, Oh well, maybe I'll just fork out the $ and get new seals. I don't powerwash (especially around seals/shocks/gaskets) I've seen the results.
Also, I've heard about trying to scrape the dirt out of the seals with a 35mm film strip? I guess that I just don't understand what makes the seals go bad, mine still seem to be soft and pliable and not dried out and rotted, maybe you'll have to expain that to me!

Thanks Again,

-Studboy-

Fork seals mostly leak due to dirt inside holding the lip of the seal away from the legs. They dont often wear unless you have a nick or sharp edge on the fork legs.

USD forks flex at the bottom of the upper fork ........right where the seal is .
Old style forks flex at the bottom triple clamp.....not where the seal is.
If I come up short on anything , I can count on messing up a set of seals, but I can trail ride all year and not need new seals .....regardless of dirt. This is on a ' 00 CR .

See ya
