Rear shock get stuck

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

We have a problem with the rear shock of a 2001 YZ426. When the bike is on the ground and you compress the seat quickly it gets stuck (hardly moves through the travel). This is becoming a problem while riding (inconsistent shock ). It is less of a problem when decreasing the rebound damping.
It is not the linkage as we have put a shock from another YZ and the problem disappeared.
Thanks in advance.

Some KYBs have had a out of round body but this sounds slightly different.Has it been fitted with a aftermarket piston?

The shock is stock including the piston. We've opened it and strangely there are no marks on the piston or inside the shock body. If the shock body is not round shouldn't there be marks in the points of extra friction ?

possibly some schmutz stuck in the valving gumming up the rebound of the shock?

Sounds like you have a a problem with the rebound rod -this can be removed by undoeing the large nut on the shock rod end and then you will see how the rebound rod moves with the adjuster-yours maybe jammed.Ensure you dont damage it when removing and grease it well(silicon grease)also grease the adjuster inside the rod end and ensure it moves freely.I also wonder if it had lost gas pressure.

This is a problem that I have seen numerous times in the last cpl years. I have seen it happen on '99-'01 KYB shocks. I have seen it on everything from brand new (no time) shocks to 6 month old used. Stock valving & revalved shocks. Most people didn't believe me or thought it was something I was doing. Perhaps I've just seen more shocks than some tuners as now some of them are starting to see it.......who knows? "IF" this is the same prob I'm thinking about then you will either need to replace the body or install a aftermarket piston with a smaller (8 mm) wide piston ring. I have done approx 50-75 of these in the last 2 yrs.

DOC,

Don't slay me that hard dude.. Perhaps? Maybe we should get the tape measure out..
I'm curious, and have talked with virtually every industry insider about it, and most say it does not exist, (I brouight it up in fairness to you, but buddy don't go down that road) and I do know belive the problem does exist, however a good shock build will cure the problem for 80% of the riders, so if you wanna get judgemental whats that say about you?

Regards,
Jer

This happened on my 98 when I first started goofing with new heavier springs and I bottomed the rebound adjuster. If you pull the bottom clevis like Marcus says be sure to relieve the res pressure first :scream: .

Who thinks that Shockdoc and Jer are really the same person?
the good cop - bad cop -ying - yang - Jeckle - Hyde - water - oil of suspension tuners.....

Hey Jer......I really wasn't bagging on you so much. Most of the BS talk around here (Jax) was from a certain person that "used" to be associated with you. I do honestly believe some type of prob does (did) exist with a few KYB shock bodys from 99-01. I would really like to talk more about it but on here its so hard with my typing skills...... We are getting ready to open the doors of our new Kawasaki/Aprilia dealership so have just been slammed and have'nt had lots of time to be on here much. If you ever make it down to Daytona stop in & say hey.

PS.........that was funny Mace.....LOL
