How bad would it be to run my '97 KDX without the fork boots??? I'm trying to get rid of the purple and it looks like to install new ones I'd have to take the forks off??

I wouldn't run without fork boots because you risk damaging the fork tubes which will lead to oil leaks. Having the fork tubes replated isn't cheap. Removing the forks is very easy, takes less than 15 minutes and replacing the boots after the forks are removed is a two minute job.
Might wanna learn how because your fork oil should be replaced at least once a season and this is easier with the forks removed.

I tried removing the boots and after a couple rides my fork seal started leaking. I bought some Seal Savers to replace the boots but those were a joke in the mud. I would say either keep the stock purple or bite the bullet and spend $20 for black fork boots.
