Rough suspension

I was out riding my 98 Yz 250 the other day and my buddy came over with his 00 426..I rode it for the first time and...well to make a long story short I noticed that my bike was alot rougher over small bumps than his and I bottomed out more, that seems like a contradiction, because I figure that if I have more compression damping then I would get that rough feeling, but would bottom out less, but his wasn't even using the last 1.5 inches of the travel and had a nice soft feel over the small stuff, Why is this?? I love the feeling his had and I would like to achieve that, does it have to do more with rebound? Where do you think I should start?

Jeff i too have noticed 4 stokes have supple suspension, alot of it is to do with the engine power delivery-a 4 stoke power pulse is different to a 2 stroke-hence the saying how a 4 stroke will hook up better, it can only hook up better if it helps the suspension smooth the bumps.I have never been able to get a 2 stoke to have as supple suspension as a 4 stroke-weight may play a part in this-im comparing to my 02 CR125 which weighs almsot nothing.A 2 stoke will not smoother small imperfections on the track as well. However you can get yours alot better with some work.Yours will feel stiff and harsh if its riding too low in the sroke(which yours sounds like)

Thanks for the insight Marcus, I'll look into that, so your saying my race sag is set wrong...like I have too much sag? Thanks again, I just had the forks redone and a new cartridge if you recall, but I still havn't set the sag since I bought the bike, that's the best bet huh?

To get an insight we need to eliminate a few things-check on www.mx-tech.com to see if you have the correct springs for your weight. Then ensure the sag is set correctly. Also make sure the fork legs are aligned correctly(guide in the download section).Next put a zip tie on the fork legs to guage how much travel you are using.Bottoming control should be altered with oil heights.Feel is controlled with the clickers. It is very easy to get misguided into thinking harsh suspension is because its too stiff-wrong , often its because its too soft. The other day i put more rebound on my shock and amazingly it became alot plusher.Jer site has a tuning guide in the download section-take it to the track and spend 20 minutes-alot can be achived with correct clicker settings.
