Phelan outing anyone?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: Bill Beard---------------------
Hey all- Coming to Apple Valley this weekend (6/8-9)and want to ride in the Phelan area. Who's game to show me this sand hill you all talk about?
Bill
Posted by: ktmboy---------------------
I'll get back to you if my boys parts come in Wed!
Posted by: thumbs---------------------
Post this in the " Places to ride" forum and you will get a better responce.
If I can get my scooter put back together I'm in.
Posted by: oldandslo---------------------
Which day? I want to go.
KTM boy how hot is it out that way?
Posted by: Boodac---------------------
Make it Sunday and Im in for the ride
Posted by: ktmboy---------------------
O&S---it's pretty warm, but we've been getting the cool breezes later in the day. Jr. and I were up there last weekend and there was a nice cool breeze at the top.
I say we go Sunday; that gives me Saturday to service the bikes, Thumbs gets an extra day to re-assemble his, and Boodac gets to go.
Pvt. Jkr. was looking to go also (on another post). I'll give him a heads up!
Bill--PM me if you would like directions or want to meet somewhere.
Where do you guys want to meet? The railroad trestle? At the top where we went last time? How's 9:00 AM Sunday sound?
Posted by: JWW---------------------
Just a heads up for you guys.... The last 2 times I parked under the trestles they were checking stickers and spark arrestors. We had both so it was no problem but they turned a few guys around.
Posted by: ktmboy---------------------
Then maybe the ridges parking spot is better?
Posted by: Boodac---------------------
Im game for anytime and and anywhere. Just let me know. Not sure what you meant by the "ridges parking spot" but Im sure I know the spot rather than the name.
Posted by: JWW---------------------
KTMBoy- I would recommend a meeting spot like last time. Then we can all drive in together.
Since most of us got lost leaving Im pretty sure none of us will find the entrance.
Posted by: thumbs---------------------
I concur with Jeff.
How does Sunday 9am @ Wendy's sound to everyone?
Posted by: thumbs---------------------
That would be Wendy's at the 395 & 15 for those of you that were not there last time.
Posted by: JWW---------------------
Its getting hot.... Can I be a jerk and say 7 or 8 am? That way we are staged and hopefully riding by 8.
Posted by: Pvt Joker---------------------
I can be there at 9 but earlier & cooler is fine with me.
Posted by: JWW---------------------
Joker- You need to clean out your PM's

Just do what comes naturally.
7-8 what so you have to wake up 15 min before we meet?
I'll see if I can swing it. I'll be out playing all day Sat. so I gotta check with the warden/cashdrain. :o
Posted by: Boodac---------------------
Are we talking the old Ease/Wilson RD or we talking something near Wendy's? Im thinking since Im only 1/4 mile from Wendys it might be worth riding over rather than loading the bike, gear and driving. Anyone? Anyone? Bueler?
Posted by: thumbs---------------------
Let's set this in stone.
Where: Wendy's parking lot at 395 & 15
When: 7:30am and we leave at 8am to head to the staging area reguardless if anyone is running late.
KTMboy - Can you post directions from Wendy's to the staging area for those that will be late.
Remember that you will need an Adventure pass for parking. Can't get them at Wendy's but here is a link to where you can get one.

There are advantages to living in the Inland Empire. Not many......
I would join in on the burger ride. If we have to go back and look for you again then your buying the burgers.

Not to mention the extra plug(s).
Posted by: thumbs---------------------
What, you didn't like following a lost guy around in the desert?
I'll bring extra plugs as always. And the GPS just in case.

OK, for you late guys, here's the directions to the staging area:
From the Wendys at the 15/395 Jct. turn rt. (north) and go about 1 mile to the next traffic light which is Phelan Rd. if you turn left, which is what you'll do! (It's Main St. if you turn Rt.) I can't remember the exact mileage (2-3 miles, but at the next light you come to you'll turn left. (Baldy Mesa Rd.)
About 1 mile in the road turns to dirt after crossing the RR tracks. From this point it's about 5 miles, so don't panic. Just stay on this road until you pass an orange 'Road ends' sign, and come to a sort of cul-de-sac looking dead-end. Take the path to your left (past the abandoned, stripped VW) which will dump you onto the powerline road on which you'll turn right.
Go approx. 1 mile on the P.L. road and park under the towers where the green sticker trails start. (Marked by signs.)
These directions ought to scare you enough to be on time!

Ok you guys may be picking my dehydrated body off the hot tundra but Im planning on being there. Tired of reading the ride reports wishing I could have gone.
Posted by: ktmboy---------------------
Windy today--over 100 degrees, but with the wind chill factor, about 85. Also supposed to be cooler by Sunday.
Pray that the wind stays--it cools things down and also blows the dust off of the trail before the next rider comes through.
Posted by: thumbs---------------------
Am I the only one taking a chance with a red sricker?
Don't forget your Avdenture pass!
Posted by: ktmboy---------------------
Well, the filters are cleaned, oiled, and mounted, fresh pre-mix in the gas cans, and the bikes are loaded up in the trailer and garaged, ready to be hooked up early tomorrow A.M.
Forest Adventure Pass is sitting on top of my hydration system. All that's left to do is shop for some munchies and drinks tonight, and load all the gear and hook up tomorrow.
Weather is much cooler today, windy, (that's a good thing!), and Jr. got a rear brake job on his scoot, so he's all set to learn how to brake-slide the tight stuff tomorrow.
Why do I still get so stoked the day before these rides? I guess that's why I'm still doing it!
Now that I'm teaching the boy to ride, it adds a whole new element to the exitement level, not to mention how nervous it makes me now that he's doing it! He's loving it as much as I do though, and just like Elk talked about wrenching on the bikes together with Elk Jr., it's so much fun working on the bikes now that I'm doing it with my boy.
I'll be a little slow tomorrow, as Rich and I will be coaching the younguns' along, but I think this will work out okay tomorrow as we'll catch up to you guys at the sandhill, and once we hit the tight singletrack I think these two will do just fine! :D
Well, I'm looking forward to another fine Wrecking Crew ride, and I'll see you all tomorrow!
Posted by: Bill Beard---------------------
Hey guys I'm here!
Got back a little while ago from a ride with my bro-in-law and step son. We had to take the young-un out (he rode my quad). We went over by Bell Mtn./Stoddard Valley. It was OK. Nice warm-up for tomorrow. YES we [bro-in-law(Butch)and I] are coming. See you all at Wendy's at 730am. As for the heat, What heat? It's cool here in CA. We have real heat in AZ. hehe
Posted by: oldandslo---------------------
High today 97.7. Max wind 33.4 mph. High Sunday 84.
Should be great weather for a ride. See you at 8 at Wendy's
Posted by: JWW---------------------
I will meet you guys at the staging area. I am bringing a friend so we are going to park down by the 15 & 138 and ride up to you guys. I figure I will be at your staging area at 8-8:15.
Posted by: ktmboy---------------------
Bill-it's actually been very pleasant here the last couple of days. It's just that whenever the valley/coastal boys come up they think it's hot up here. Wait 'til July; that's when it gets hot. I've worked in Arizona before though (Tuscon, Phoenix), and I'm very greatful to live in the much cooler HIGH desert as opposed to the LOW (HOT, HOT, HOT) desert where you reside!
When it gets too warm there you always know where you can ride where it's cooler!
Jeff-We'll see you at the staging area.
To all the Wendys caravan guys--White Explorer/trailer with wood sides, 2 bikes-KTM/white Yamaha. See you there!
Posted by: Ol'89r---------------------
Have fun guys. I rode with some friends on Thursday at Ocotillo Wells. Talk about HOT. :scream: It was 113 degrees by 11:00 am. Needless to say, we didn't ride in the afternoon.
