She's Loading Up Captain, she can't take anymore..

Jeez... going through sparkplugs lately from loading up.

The bike: modified KDX 250, always was a tad sensitive to loading up but this is getting ridiculous. It's coughing and belching and loading up about 6 times an hour.

Here's what's changed since started this problem:
Riding with my son, the beginner, in first and second gear all the time. A lot of chugging

Riding with another new rider, but not as slow as my son.

Added a moose fender bag to the back fender right up against the seat, affecting airflow somehow???

Running an NGK 8 (can't remember details off hand, but using both racing and non-racing plugs), Always have run these plugs, never had much of a problem in the past. For the last four years, I've run YamalubeR at 40 to 1. Previous owner also ran at 40 to 1.

Should I simply start sticking in hotter plugs? Check packing in the silencer?
Thanks for any guidance.

Checked your air filter lately? Also if you've recently cleaned it and oiled it too much it can lead to your bike running rich. I'm not sure about the KDX-250, but my KDX200 uses NGK's BR8ES, if you want to go hotter, just go for a lower numbered plug. Good luck.

When on a "just Putting around" ride go to a hotter plug --and the "details" are very important. B7EV or B7EG. These have a very thin electrode that will fire even when covered with oil. The S series plugs have a much wider electrode prone to fouling but much cheaper to manufacture. The R series have an internal resistance and thus an internal voltage drop. They are primarily used for eliminating radio frequency interference --not m uch of a concern for most mototcycles. [A few electronic ignition systems specify the R plugs to eliminate RF feedback]. You might also consider dropping the needle 1 clip.

I have a 1993 KDX250, and it's been eating plugs lately too..

I was getting pissed off with it, so I dropped my needed on the trail, it's now all the way down (top clip).. And I haven't ruined a plug since.. Leading me to believe it's simply a jetting issue.

Last season, on the same bike, I didn't foul 1 plug.. But over the winter I ported the bike, and also put in a KX head gasket.. Perhaps the combo made the jetting even richer than it was (relatively).. Anyways, when I have a chance, I'm going to rejet it, and hopefully find the solution to my now very expensive problem.. I've gone through probably 15 plugs in the last 10 rides.

Jon!

Sounds like the begginings of a wet-side crank seal leak to me...I went through the same problem a couple of years ago. The jetting that had been perfect for a long time, all of a sudden didn't seem so perfect anymore. I started eating plugs for lunch. The problem turned out to be the crank seal, even though I wasn't noticeing any excesive smoke, or loss of tranny lube.

Man, I hate changing Kawie crank seals...why did they have to put the darn things on the inside, forcing you to split the cases?

re: B7EV or B7EG

I don't think they (NGK) make the 'G' series in a 7 heat range. So I've been told by three different retailers anyway...and I didn't see it listed in an NGK write-up neither. Hence...I'm currently running a B8EG.

From another thread, mr. rohrich brought up a projected reach series..say a BPRxxx. That type of plug would tend to run cleaner.

Jmutiger: If it's just been ported..worked well before, has 'issues' now, I'd for sure be working on jetting before I worried about crank seals.

re: splitting cases. Never done that. I have this vision of little thingys going 'sproing' all over the place. I saw a shop mech putting together (timing) a crank with a SLEDGE once...thought, 'I don't wanna do that!'
