skid plate

Does anyone use a skid plate on the bottom of their gear box area? Better yet...has anyone damaged their bike because they didn't have a skid plate attached? Will the plastic ones hold up or should I go Aluminum?

Doesn't everyone use one???

Not only will it save your engine, but your frame. I've seen bike frames destroyed due to flattening from getting pounded by rocks or whatever.

Mine is aluminum (from works). Carbon fiber works from others I've seen. As long as you get one by 6-10-02, you'll be fine!!

Well...this is assuming you ride somewhere that HAS rocks'n-stuff. If you stick to some track thing...don't worry about it.

There's one added benefit. In deep mud ruts a skid or glide plate will often times keep you from hanging up. It simply provides a smoother larger surface for the bottom of the bike to "float" or "glide" on.

Similarily, it will help you from getting stuck crossing big logs.

I ran an Acerbis plastic plate on my old 87 Cr250. I rode mostly in eastern oregon that has a lot of fireroads and rocks. Lots of hills also. I liked the plate cause it did cover the underside of the bike and protected the lower case from rocks. Plus it never rattled or made any noise. I was secured with quick disconnect worm clamps and zip ties in the back. What I did not like about the plate is that there was no predrilled hole for the oil drain, it was cupped at all sides so there was no drain holes for any water or mud to get into it and when I finally could not avoid a large rock at the end of a supercross sized jump, there was not enough support to keep the plastic from flexing and the rock took out the clutch case and basket. Overall for a rock gaurd, it worked great and made no noise.

on my XR and KDX I have aluminum skid plates. They cover a lot higher up then the plastic ones to protect the water/oil pump. They can rattle a bit, so you may need to use some silcone or camper sealing tape to eliminate the rattles with them.

If you have the money get an aluminum one for heavy duty use. If you just want something to deflect rocks the plastic is fine. Just remember that the plastic will not keep you from crushing the frame rails where the aluminum has a better chance of not doing that.

I have a Devol aluminum plate that also came with a waterpump guard. I have always been happy with Devol products, plus I would not think of riding off road without one.

I have a Moose skid plate that works great.
