Thumper Racing KLX340 kit.

I just read the article in dirt bike on the 340 kit from Thumper Racing and was wondering who has one and how does it perform? It has a 10.5: 1 piston and uses the stock CV carb (rejetted). I talked to Thumper and they said: very reliable, great low end, not a big boost in horsepower, much more fun to ride, makes a better woods bike and is easier to ride in the woods than with a pumper carb. Does anyone have one?

There are several on the KLX email list that have the 340, including Mike (WR250G) and Tracy. Mike has had his for some time and has decided to go all out with a 365. Tracy just got his and really seems to like the added boost, noting the same thing the DB Mag article did, that you can run a gear higher with it.

But both of these guys run FCRs pumper carbs with theirs. I have one on my 300 and would never go back to the CVK, since I count on the bike to respond directly to my right wrist, especially if I want to cross a log, rock, or other obstacle where lifting the front wheel is needed. The DB Mag article noted Thumper fit an FCR and it did give more power, but it wasn't worth the fitment issues. Not sure about this unless they meant jetting, since the FCR can be a bit finicky to jet initially (but Thumper's been there, done that, so it doesn't add up to me). I question if the FCR is worth $500, but for around $350 you can get a nice Mikuni 36 which runs really well.

With a 340 Kit and stock carb you won't get any more power but will be able to mow taller grass without stalling!

Can those pumper carbs be jetted fairly easily, especially for high altitude, or are pumper carbs harder to jet? Or don't they need jetting as much as the say, stock carbs? Also, are there a good variety of jets and needles available? Thanks.

They jet the same way. The stock CVK is probably a little more forgiving but the Mikuni's are pretty straightforward. The Keihin FCRs are definitely more finicky to jet since there are more variables. However, once dialed in they probably produce a little more power.

Thanks Doug----about time to get that EXC 200, don't you think?
