I'm waiting on the owner's manual but for now I'm just doing maintenance. I got this bike 2 days ago.The plastic still has the shiny gloss to it with no scratches on it until I crashed yesterday.Even the decal with the wings are still shiny,,WOW!
Also, is there any tips I should know about.
I read somewhere it has a tendency to overheat, but I dont ride that hard anymore.
And why does it have 2 carbs and how do they work?
By looking at the slide operation,it looks like the primary is from idle to a 1/4 throttle and the secondary is from mid to WOT.
Do they both have PJ's? or just one of the carbs?(the primary)?

Thank You for any knowledge.

Sounds like a beauty I don't remember hearing about them over heating I remember it being said the old 350's used to eat up 3rd gear.

whys.

Congrats on your purchase. These are great little trail bikes. They did have a little overheating problem with those that were ridden in the desert. I would not recommend it for dunes riding, but, for single track trails they are hard to beat. If you are going to ride it in the dunes you may want to put a oil cooler on it.

Your assumptions are correct about the twin carbs. The left side carb is the primary carb. It has the pilot jet and low speed system. The right side carb is the secondary carb and has all of the high speed jetting. When properly tuned, they work very well.

Change your oil and filter frequently and check the valve adjustment. Other than that just ride it and have fun.

One little tip. These engines seem to work best at a higher rpm. Seems like the faster you spin them, the better they work. They also work good down low, but really come alive at a high rpm.

I bought one new in '83. I have several newer bikes, but the old XR is still my favorite ride for single track trails.

Just my $ .02

thank you guys....
I took it apart and there was a mice nest in the air box(It was half full)
Cleaned everything up and runs really great! It actually looks new
I think I'm going to like it.Rode it yesterday and everything is working great.

Would anyone happen to know what set-up for tires would be? It sat in a shop for a long time and the tires are cracked, and losing knobs.
Now that it looks new I kinda dont want to get it dirty
Can't wait for tires,so I can try it out on the trails here.
Went trail riding with a YZ and a CR,which was kinda hard on big loose rocks and long steep hill climbs,it was a rough day on those, but the rutted, rooted, dirt trails is what I really had fun on cause we could hook-up really well, with good throttle control of course.
Anyway,
thanks again
I want to see how this bike does on it.

You have purchased a good bike.
I brought an XR350 new in 1983. Rode it for 26,000km.
Only reliability problems inlet valves bouncing on the piston
as the valve springs were a bit weak (also didn’t like revving to 11,000rpm)
The bike weighs 112kg (dry) puts out ~26 bhp at the rear wheel.
Its short wheelbase and good low speed torque make it quick in tight
going.
If the bike has been stationary for a long time a shock/fork overhaul
would be useful.
The dual carbs give a bit of a top end boost. Fuel economy can be amazing
Geared up (15:44) and with leaner jets I have managed in excess of
90mpg (imperial). Only sold mine after 18 years as it was wearing out.
I would have kept the bike otherwise, with modified suspension it did
Well relative to a xr400.
Bought a WR426.. in comparison heaps more top end power, and much better
suspension at speed and with regard to stability, however I am only quicker out
of corners and up steep rutted hills on this bike.

I wouldn't worry about it overheating, I rode my XR500 pretty hard during the summer months with out a problem. The only problem I had is when I put a new Cobra exhaust on it. She went boom

Have fun with it

I have Cheng Shin C-755 on the rear and it slides all over the place when its just alittle wet outside.
The Front tires are a clone that looks like a 752. Yesterday I went to a Q*** type track just to fiddle around.Anytime I hit an area where the sprinkler's were going,I'd be sliding all over the place.I ended up in my buddies shed sideways. :scream:
So I jumped on the YZ and it out-classed the 350,but it had a 752 rear and an m-12 up front. It hooked up better than the 350.
I just got inside from another ride.It rained alittle. The ground was wet a 1/2 over the top of hard stuff. The YZ came out on top.
Any tire ideas?for the 350?
I think that if I were to ride this thing in the woods with any top/soil moisture
at all,I will eat it.
Its just that the butt end always slides out from under me when theres moisture on the ground. I can even feel it when I'm goin straight and give it gas..
Thanks.
