I thought I would post this on here because it was a real head scratcher for a couple of days. At any rate my friend turned his 400f over to a local shop to have his fork seals replaced. They told him to pick it up in two days(Sat.). Friday afternoon he got a call that they where waiting on parts and to pick it up on Tues. of the following week. Well we thought nothing of it untill he picked the bike up. Seals were replaced no problem, [B]BUT!!!!, after I saw his bike was when the head scracthing started. He hadn't noticed that all his stickers from the number plates, brake cover and brush guards had been removed.(Army officers have alot on their minds!) My brother came up with the cause. In order to ride in the local races(TN) there can be nothing on the plates or for anonymity.....I don't see how that would work seince he has the same grafics that CR has.....Yamaha of Troy/5th Dragon. Someone from the shop decided it would be cool to ride my buddies bike for the weekend. He is following up on it and so far there is little or nothing he can do.
People, be really careful with your investments and know your local shops!

Dang, it makes me wonder if a guy should take digital pics of his bike in the shop parking lot - Making sure the shop knows you just took them, maybe even offer to give them copies when you're dropping it off. I doubt you'll ever be able to prove anything but I'd let all the locals know that the stickers got removed. Might want to be careful about accusing ths shop of anything else though. Sorry to hear that man. Where is that brother of yours?

The first thing that came to my mind was they had to wash it before they worked on it. Those power washers can remove those stickers in nothing flat.

If someone did ride it in a race, I would check with the race officals and get all the names of the riders that entered a bike like yours and see if any of them work at that shop. If so I would confront the shop owner and also call the bike manufacture and let them know what their dealership does to customer bikes.

I am glad I take my forks off the bike and hand deliver them to the shop. Kinda hard to enter a bike race with just the forks.

Oh, btw, I would REALLY BE PISSED someone did that to my bike.

Good point. I only take parts that need work done to the shop also (but it's because I don't have a truck). Phil, what's this brake cover you speak of?

Posted by: IrishEKU---------------------

The disk cover on the front end.........And KDX......He washed it before he took it in.......Like me he is pretty anal when it comes to cleaning the bike.............

Please tell me what shop this was or what town or county it is in! :scream:
Why would they care if you had stickers on your bike to race, anyway?

Posted by: IrishEKU---------------------

2001yz250,
I'll call my buddy tonight for the name when he gets in from the feild. The shop is in Clarksville/Montgomery county.

what are you doing TROOP! take that bike down to your health and welfare garage and you do the work on it. i leaned the hard way about local bike techs after about 1,500+$ in repair ,2 seperate shops and nobody noticed my 87 kdx was really an 83 kdx.! now, beat your face.!

Posted by: IrishEKU---------------------

1 sergeant.......2 sergeant.........3 sergeant.......OCS sucks........

Posted by: mkuder---------------------

What you guys don't work on your own bikes???? He he

Fork seals are easy, I change my own and don't even have the proper tools. No leaks yet and I've been doing it for years. Nobody touches my bike!

Posted by: sfc crash---------------------

recover....yep, gotta do all your own work. got the ole 83 kdx up on a stand now and gotta tell ya, hated to do it, but gotta learn somehow. tore into my '01 426 and did the valve timing and rejetting. my work is cheap and in the end, i'm responsible.

Posted by: marcusgunby---------------------

A friend sent his car in for repair-checked the milage-on return it was well over 100 miles more then the return trip-get this the garage owner still tryed to play innocent and swore no one used it that weekend-a polition in the making

Posted by: IrishEKU---------------------

mkuder,
I do most of the work on mine and my brothers bike. But seince I live about 3 hours away from there my buddy decided to have the shop do it, or I would have replaced his seals. There is only one thing I won't/can't do myself.......The rear shock........

I have never had a shop touch any bike i have ever owned

Posted by: 2001yz250---------------------

A friend of mine is needing his seals replaced and can't afford to have it done right now. I think it might be a good opportunity for me to learn how!

Posted by: dave186---------------------

Buy a repair manual and do it yourself! Fork seals are pretty easy, so are shocks. The only time even a part of my bike goes to a shop is for machine work like boring, plating, head work, stuff like that. When I do take a part in, I always strip any loose parts off, if it looks like it could get lost, take it off cause it will.

Damn, dude.
I agree with the general population here. I grew up working on bikes, I had no other choice, had a broken down old SL-70 and I had to fix it or I didnt ride. It went from there. None of my bikes have ever been in a shop. Only ONCE, I took a crank into someone to have the IMS rod kit installed on it, but thats because I dont have the 60 ton press or jigs for assembly. I know I can trust the work I do, I wouldnt want to be tearing ass cross the field and have something let go that wasnt done right.
As for follow up, I would be down there with a Louisville slugger!!! COuld they even offer an explanation as to the missing stickers? or did they deny knowing about it?

Posted by: sfc crash---------------------

ok boys, give him a break. he's a canidate. as soon as he peels his head out of his 4th point of contact he'll be cool.

When I was a pup, I had a CZ400. took it to the local shop for some work. I got it back and they were so kind to replace that crappy Mikuni carb I had on it with a stock Jikov carb. Gee, I wonder if that crappy Mikuni ended up on their shop race CZ? Hmmmm. But I was a farm boy and didn't know squat.

Recently I had a YZ80 I put on consignment at a local shop. I ran MX practice at a local track one Thursday night. Lo and behold, the head mechanic's kid was out doing laps on my YZ80. At least he bought it the next day.

You people need to learn how to quit taking your crap in to shops for work. Like the man said, buy a shop manual and do it yourself. Shocks are almost as easy as forks to do. Get someone to help you out the first time or two. Suspension is not such a mystery to me anymore.

By doing your own maintenance, you get a better feel for how your scooter works and how to fix it when it isn't working. If you do take stuff in, like the man said, strip it down, take pictures and be demanding.

Posted by: crkid---------------------

I will take my bike to a shop, but only when it's something I can't do at my house. I never take it to a dealer though, I take it to a guy that lives out in the middle of nowhere. He's retired and runs a mechanic business out of this building in his backyard. I know him well and does GREAT work. Plus, he's too old to ride anymore.
