HELP!! TTR250 won't run- interlock problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Does anyone have any experience with the TTR250 and its interlock system? A friend just got one and on the third ride it quit and won't start. The starter will turn the motor over but it won't fire. He found the wire to the neutral switch (engine cases) dangling free and the screw missing. Even after reconnecting the wire it turns over but won't fire.

Anyone have any experience with this bike? How about a link to a wiring diagram? I'm gonna see him tomorrow and hope to be better prepared to address it.

Thanks guys,

I have a manual, let me go look it over. The nuetral/clutch safety won't turn the motor over though. I haven't seen any kind of interlock that will let the starter turn but keep it from firing but I will look to see what diagrams are in the book. Got a fax # ? Sounds more like a problem with the electronic ignition coil/spark system to me.

Pickup coil - 190-230 Ohms @ 20 deg C Yellow/Blu
Ignition coil - Primary .36 ~ .48 ohms @ 20 deg C
Secondary 5.44 ~ 7.36k Ohms @ 20 deg C

Spark plug cap - 10 k Ohms

Don't see too much that would keep it from firing - Make sure it has spark. If not it could be a faulty CDI, pickup coil or woodruff key, broken or shorted primary/seconday (do the resistance tests above), faulty spark plug lead or bad plug.

Tex - you have a chance to look it over yet?

Not yet TTRGuy. Thanks for the tips. I'll go over this afternoon. Plan is to stop in the dealer and take a look at the schematic for anything wierd. The bike belongs to a friend, so let's hope there is not some other ignition problem. It could just have been coincidence that another problem stopped the bike and he found the dangling wire. Guess I should throw another bike in the van just in case so we can still ride.

TTRGuy -

We got the TTR running. As suspected, a secondary cause coincident with the interlock wire hanging was the culprit.

The carb popped away from the manifold when he hit a log! The front clamp was loose. I don't think the motor was hurt from the little time it ran with the carby loose.

Next subject - jetting. Anyone got specs for the following??

2000 TTR250
Stock exhaust/baffle removed
Snorkel removed
Riding at 7,000-13,000 feet

It has a 50 pilot/140 main and the needle dropped all the way and is running OK now. Ran like crap until I dropped the needle (on top of Tin Cup Pass BTW) but I think it is still rich.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!! Leo

Does it have the stock Teikei (sp?) carb on it or a mikuni? If it still has the stock one did you actually find jets for it?

Stock Carby and the bike came with a few main jets in Yamaha parts bags stapled to a receipt. Looks like the dealer can get them, once I know what jets to get.
