can anybody give me some info or know where I can find an articale on the web that tells you how to uncork the choked up power. it is very slow stock but I have heard they can be made to be faster.........thanks

bajadesigns.com used to have some good articles and parts on their web site regarding the 650L. Not sure if it is all there since they re-designed the site.
The dynojet.com folks also have a few things to say about the 650L if my memory serves me correctly. My understanding is the CV carb needs some mods above and beyond standard jetting to make it work right on the uncorked bike.
I'm not sure if the info above addresses this one point, but it is a common practice on XRs (250-650) to pull the headpipe and grind the welds right at the flange where it mounts to the engine. Someone on an XR400 site did some calculations and I think came up with a 30% increase in the surface area of the opening by doing the grind job. A dremel or cutting tool in a regular drill is all that is needed.
The bike will run markedly better with the standard de-EPAing treatment (airbox/baffle/jetting/gearing), but be sure to look into the carb mods and jetting, particularly if you plan to take the bike up to altitude. A friend just got back from a trip to CO with his L. It ran fine at sea level. He jetted it a few sizes leaner, but it ran very poorly above 8000 feet. If you do go to CO with the bike, most riding is in the 7000'-13,000' range if you are up in the mountains. My 280 is jetted so it pops a little bit on closed throttle deceleration at 8000', (lean condition), but it starts and runs fine all the way up to 13,500'.
